Mending the hearts of grieving children and teens since 2001

Newsletter, Spring 2011

An Exciting New Chapter

Exactly ten years and three days after Ted E. Bear Hollow was approved as a non-profit by the State of Nebraska, we moved into our beautiful new home at 7811 Farnam Drive. Final touches were completed as we prepared for our ribbon cutting on March 23 and our 10th Birthday Party on March 27. Our guests included Mayor Jim Suttle, Councilman Ben Grey, representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, Childrens Hospital & Medical Center executives, TEBH board members, donors, volunteers, family participants and media representatives. The overwhelming response from all our constituents was, This is a fantastic place. The colors pop, providing a bright yet warm welcome to the children who come to find the support they need. Every age group has their special room, decorated appropriately for them to do their important work. The kitchenette is equipped for our pot-luck meals for families in support groups. Cabinets and storage accommodates the massive amount of stuff needed for all our groups and camps. Offices are well outfitted to house the growing staff. The new parking lot and signage are in place. The 10 Years and Growing Campaign is entering its final phase. The building is only a setting for the real work of Ted E. Bear Hollowto support grieving children after a death so that they can heal. The addition of staff members will allow us to increase our programs in coming months and years. The usage of the Ted E. Bear Hollow space will increase and more children will go on to thrive in spite of suffering one of lifes hardest blows, the death of a loved one.
Welcome Andrew Dungan... Ted E. Bear Hollow is pleased to announce that Andrew Dungan has joined the staff as the development coordinator. Andrew comes with non-profit experience from Desert Ministries, Inc and is currently working on his doctorate in Leadership at Creighton University. His job responsibilities include fundraising, event planning, supporting the fund development work of the executive director, communications and social media. Andrew has increased Ted E. Bear Hollows presence on Facebook and Twitter. Get in on the buzz; join our online communities!

Thanks to the Nebraska Arts Council, kids, teens and volunteers who worked with artist Leslie Iwai on interactive art projects to decorate our new home. Five mobiles and one giant teddy bear now fill our group rooms with color, warmth and joy.

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Ted E. Bear Hollow Supporter, A phrase often repeated during the last few months here at Ted E. Bear Hollow is, The stars have aligned. Because of many stars, we are now settled in a wonderful building, at an ideal location (mid-city), without monthly rent, thanks to the generosity of Childrens Hospital and Medical Center. We have the renovation bills paid thanks to many generous donors (see the list). We were blessed with the services of KVI Associates who did not charge us for the general contracting because the owner understands the importance of helping grieving children. A top interior designer of childrens hospitals nationwide volunteered to choose the materials and colors. These are a few of the stars. Now we are in the final phase of completing our 10 Yearsand Growing Campaign so that we can have the staff and infrastructure to mend the hearts of grieving children and teens in ever greater numbers. Yet our board is not about to sit back and rest on a plateau. We are now planning the next ten years of growth through strategies that will allow us to support many more children whose hearts are aching from their losses. We know we can put smiles on their faces as they discover they are not alone and that there is hope for their future. We are committed to making this happen by focusing the immense talent and resources of our board, staff, volunteers and donors on supporting many more vulnerable children. We invite you to join in the alignment of stars as we complete our campaign on July 15. Will you use the enclosed envelope to make your gift support the grieving children in the coming years? If you choose to make a gift of $250 or more, a leaf will be added to the Donor & Memorial Tree with your name. If you give the gift in memory of a loved one, we will put his/her name on a Memorial Apple. Gratefully, Nancy Hemesath
The recent move to our new home is one of many in the history of TEBH. Scott, Shawn and Bailey McCarville have been involved as a family with TEBH since TEBHs infancy and have watched the agency grow throughout the years. In looking to the first time we encountered TEBH, I was honestly a little skeptical as we pulled into the parking space in front of a tiny old gas station. What is this, I thought. We went in not knowing what to expect, not knowing this would be the beginning of a 10-year relationship with this new place. I recall after that first meeting, all of us cramped into a small room and the kids being taken next door to a day care that was rented out for the evening, my girls came out talking and sharing and it was refreshing to know that maybe we found a place they can remember and share without it being a scary and sad event. I have watched TEBH grow and move to many facilities, each one just a little bit larger, each one holding its own memories and serving its purpose at that time, each one absorbing the tears and hopes of those that have walked through each door. It is truly amazing to have watched TEBH grow over the last 10 years to what it has become today, to have watched all of our kids take part in the program and to see my girls becoming volunteers. That is how it has touched our family these kids are now wanting to give back and watch others grow with TEBH into the next 10 years. Scott McCarville Walking into a new place and not knowing what was going to happen was scary and was what I felt when I first walked into the day care next door. Being involved with this group from the beginning has been wonderful. I have seen so much growth and dedication from its supporters which is the reason it is still standing today, bigger and better than ever. I am so glad to have been a part of TEBH all of these years. Shawn McCarville, 16

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ted E. Bear Hollow is in the midst of piloting a brand new program for youth grieving a loss. Growing Through Loss is a 12-session support group that strives to help participants integrate the losses into their lives in a meaningful way and develop healthy coping skills. Studies demonstrate that this program has been effective in reducing both depression and aggression among participants. Ted E. Bear Hollow has piloted this program at both the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center and the North Omaha Girls Inc. with successful results.
