Supermarkets

the

main
supermarkets
in

While
relatively
small

size,
they
do
stock
most

emergency
purchases
that
you
might
need.
There
is
also
a
Carrefour

located

There

There

from

essentially
a
wet
market.
Water
Tap
water
in
China
is
not
potable
so
most
of
us
would
purchase
a
water
dispenser.
Barrels
of
water
can
be
purchased
from
at
62767007.
A
free
water
dispenser
comes
with
every
30
barrels
of
water
purchased.
Of
course,
you
can
also
purchase
your
water
dispenser
from
Carrefour
(which
would
denitely
be
better
than
the
one
which
comes
free).
These
water
dispensers
costs
anything
between
99RMB
and
399RMB,
depending
on
their
functions,
like
making
cold
water
in
addition
to
the
de
rigour
hot
water
function.
If
you
do
not
want
to
use
a
water
dispenser,
the
other
alternative
would
be
to
buy
big
bottles
of
mineral
water
from
school
Carrefour
but
that
would
denitely
be
more
expensive.
Laundry
For
those
living
in
Shaoyuan,
we
usually
go
to
and
to
purchase
second-hand
washing
machines.
The
washing
machines
are
usually
shared
among
a
few
people
(about
5,
usually
those
living
on
the
same
level)
and
will
be
put
together
with
other
washing
machines
at
the
common
washing
area.
A
second-hand
washing
machine
costs
about
200-300RMB.
The
other
alternative
is
to
send
all
your
laundry
to
the
in
school.
Each
load
(5kg)
costs
about
10RMB.
There
are
many
laundry
services
within
school,
including
dry-cleaning,
pressing,
washing,
as
well
as
tailors
to
mend
spoilt
zips
or
the
like.
There
are
more
professional
dry- cleaners
at
and
,
if
you
want
to
look
after
a
nice
suit. For
those
living
in
ZGXY,
washing
machines
are
provided
by
ZGXY,
hence
there
is
no
need
to
buy
second-hand
machines.
There
are
2
machines
located
on
certain
levels,
and
all
you
need
to
do
is
to
pay
a
certain
amount
of
money
to
use
the
machine
(amount
still
currently
unknown).

They can be found just outside or and they can be a great help especially when taxis are hard to come by in school and you dont feel like going out of school to get a cab. Negotiate with the the price of the ride before boarding the cab. (e.g. a ride to should cost max 15RMB to PKU, or 10RMB to THU) We advise against using them unless you are more familiar with the journey, and especially if you are female and/or if it is late at night. Even so, stick to operators which you are more familiar with, but do note that there will always be a risk with unlicensed operators, especially in cases of accidents.

ATMs There are many ATMs in school. Even though for all banks under (most banks are), any ATM can be used to withdraw money regardless of bank, please note that a withdrawing fee of 5RMB will be charged whenever you use an ATM card in an ATM of a dierent bank. For Peking University, the BOC ATM is located just beside super mart ; ICBC is within the ICBC branch in school while CITIC ATM is located near the next to . The maximum amount you can withdraw per transaction is 2000 or 2500RMB (depending on ATM). There is also a daily limit to the amount you can withdraw per day. Please also note that a withdrawing fee of 25RMB is charged whenever you withdraw money using your ATM card within China, but outside Beijing.
3)
Foreign Exchange and Telegraphic Transfers (TT) Since most of us receive our allowances in USD or SGD, we would need to change our allowances into RMB. USD can be changed into RMB at the ICBC branch in school; however, it does not allow SGD to be changed into RMB. For PKU, you will need to go to the main ICBC branch outside to change the SGD in your bank account into RMB. For THU, head to the BOC branch at C. There are no money changers (like those we have in Singapore) in China so all currency exchange can only be done in banks. In fact, it is recommended that you go to the BOC whenever you need to exchange currencies. Restrictions are placed on foreigners as to the amount of money we can exchange; please check with the bank for more details. Your passport is required. Telegraphic transfer: There is a Western Union within the school compound (within ) that allows money transfers. Other ways of TT include going to the bank. For detailed procedures, please go to the bank and ask the personnel for details.
Valid proof of students housing arrangement/Accommodation Certicate from the local police station. (Not required for the students living on campus) It usually takes 5 working days to get the Residence Permit done. However, as there will be many other foreign students from all other universities applying for residence permit at that time, it might take slightly longer (even up to a month) to get back your passport and permit back. Address: 2 Working hours: 8:30am-4:30pm (Monday to Saturday)Tel:86-010-84020101Website: http://www.bjgaj.gov.cn/ index.jsp How to get there via public transport: Take the subway and alight at (Line 5) . For THU, you may submit your application to the agent located at who will do the application for you at a cost of 60RMB. It is a lot more convenient as you are not required to queue up at the oce nor head down another time to collect your passport. It takes about 10 days for the application.
