Getting to Peking University from Beijing Capital International Airport
1) Cab (known as ): Upon exiting the airport, head to taxi stands, which will be clearly demarcated. While there has been an eective campaign to reduce the s operating at the airports now, illegal operators may still approach you if you have a lot of luggage. Do not follow illegal taxis (known as ), especially if you are unfamiliar with Beijing. You should reject them. At least for now, stick with taxis that have a 2.00RMB sticker on their window. There are many cab operators in Beijing, all of which have this label. i) To Shaoyuan :Tell the taxi driver to go to and enter via the ; remember to show the security guards your letter of acceptance so that they will allow you to enter. Upon entering the school, go straight and then turn right at the rst junction that you see. Then go straight for another 30 plus meters before turning right again into . The cab ride will cost about 110RMB (inclusive of 10RMB of highway toll), and the journey should last for around an hour, depending on trac. ii) To Zhongguanxinyuan (ZGXY): ZGXY is located along . However, the main gate along is not opened yet, hence please tell the cab driver to enter ZGXY via . Showing the letter of acceptance would allow you to enter ZGXY. Upon arrival, please proceed to ZGXY Blk 9 to settle accommodation related issues. The cab fare and duration to ZGXY should be similar to that of Shaoyuan. 2) Bus (known as ): Take an airport express bus from the airport to (route 5). From the terminal, take a cab to , and enter via (see above) for those heading to Shaoyuan. For those heading to ZGXY, tell the cab driver to enter ZGXY via (see above). The bus fare costs 16RMB while the cab ride should cost between 12-14RMB. The bus journey should last for 45 minutes, while the cab ride should not take more than 10 minutes. It is not dicult to get a cab at the terminal as there should be many cabs waiting at the side for you. This is a good option if you are coming alone and will arrive in Beijing within the operation hours of the airport bus. For this route, the rst bus leaves the airport at 8:30am and the nal bus leaves at 21:30. Bus frequency is 30 minutes. The airport bus services 6 routes, which reach many other popular destinations in the city. For more details, please refer to http://010.58.com/huoche/4061.shtml 3) Train (known as ) i) To Shaoyuan: Take the train to (nal stop), change to line 10, and stop at station. Take a cab from there to , and enter via the . The train ticket costs 25RMB. The cab fare should cost 10RMB. The train journey from Terminal 3

to will be around 30 minutes, and the journey from to will be an additional 30 minutes. The cab ride after should not be more than 10 minutes. ii)To ZGXY: For those taking the subway to ZGXY, after arriving at , you can change to line 10 and change again to line 4 at and nally stop at . ZGXY is within a walking distance from the stop. However, since this route requires quite a bit of walking and changing lines, we encourage you to take a similar route as the one mentioned above for Shaoyuan, stopping at along line 10 and taking a cab directly from stop to ZGXY.

Bicycles
There are many places that sell bicycles a number of us buy ours from Tsinghua University . Bicycles can be xed at the bicycle repairing centre outside . There is one more repair shop outside the library and one more outside east entrance.

Accommodation
1) Within School: The two places of accommodation on campus are Shaoyuan and Zhongguanxinyuan (ZGXY). As of the 2010 Fall Semester, all incoming CGS scholars who choose to stay on campus will have to stay at Block 5 of ZGXY, while non-CGS scholars can choose to stay at either Shaoyuan or ZGXY. X-Visa holders cum foreign students are required to apply for a residence permit within 30 days after they touch down in Beijing. Please proceed to the Overseas Student Oce, Floor 1, Building 3 for the residence permit application. i) Shaoyuan To check in, please bring the notice signed by the international student oce to the Division oce of International Relations. After paying the housing fees for half a year and 200 Yuan deposit for keys at room 112, Building 1, Shaoyuan Guest House, you will get the room key and a mailbox key. Whenever you change your passport, visa or residence permit, you need to check in with the teacher again. The accommodation fee should be paid in advance. Generally, Shaoyuan charges fees for one semester each time. - Double Rooms 1-430RMB/day per student, 2 to a room, common toilet, bathroom, kitchen and washing area. The toilets, bathrooms, kitchens and washing areas for Buildings 1-3 are located at both ends of each oor on Building

2. For Building 4, the facilities are situated at the west side of the building. Bathrooms can be used from 6am onwards and hot water supply ends at 12am each day. The kitchens come with electric cookers. Please pay housing fees at room 217, building 2, Shaoyuan guest house. Business hours: 8am-11am, 2pm-5pm, from Monday to Friday. - Student Apartments 666RMB/day per student, apartment with 3 individual rooms, private toilet, bathroom. - Student Apartments 890RMB/day per student, apartment with 2 individual rooms, private toilet, bathroom. For student apartments, please pay at the lobby of Building 7, open 24 hours. There will be no additional charges for usage of water and electricity and there are electric sockets in every room. ii) Zhongguanxinyuan Zhongguanxinyuan ( , ZGXY) is the new hostel for international students studying at Peking University. As of the 2010 Fall Semester, all CGS scholars who choose to stay on campus will stay at ZGXY Block 5. It is 2 to a room, with common toilets, bathrooms, kitchen and laundry area. While hot water is available 24/7 at the common area, the sink in every room only has cold water. The common toilets, bathrooms, kitchen and laundry area are located at the end of each level. There is also a water and electricity system where you have to pay for the water which you use at the common toilets and bathrooms. There is also a meter outside every room which might mean that occupants will have to pay for electricity and water bills should they exceed a certain quota*. Currently, there is no information about the costs of the rooms in Block 5 since they are only meant for CGS scholars. Non-CGS scholars who wish to live in Block 5 will have to approach the ZGXY oce for more details. For non-CGS scholars who want to live in ZGXY, there is the option of Block 6. Details of Block 6 are as follows: apartment with 2 rooms, 2 to a room, 64RMB/day, private toilet and bathroom, common kitchen and laundry area located on the 1st, 3rd, 5th level of the block. Occupants need to pay electricity and water bills should they exceed a certain quota. Registration
The date for freshmen registration is 1st September 2010 (Wednesday). Registration would most probably take place within Shaoyuan. Details of Orientation 2010 would only be released on the Oce of International Relations (OIR) website nearer the date itself. To get a general feel of how Orientation 2010 would be like, please refer to http://www.oir.pku.edu.cn/ orientation/. The 2010 Fall Semester ocially starts on 8th September 2010 (Wednesday)

Supermarkets
and are the 2 main supermarkets in school. While relatively small in size, they do stock most necessities and emergency purchases that you might need. There is also a Carrefour () near school, located at which is a 10-minute cab ride from school, as well as 2 s, one a 10 minute walk from the , the other along on the way to . There is another supermarket at and one at the basement of U-centre. There are many fruit stalls within school, around and inside the , which is near . Additionally, there is a (5 minute bike ride from the west gate of the school, ) open from mornings to early afternoon, that sells fresh fruits, vegetables and meat etc. essentially a wet market.

Water
Tap water in China is not potable so most of us would purchase a water dispenser. Barrels of water can be purchased from at 62767007. A free water dispenser comes with every 30 barrels of water purchased. Of course, you can also purchase your water dispenser from Carrefour (which would denitely be better than the one which comes free). These water dispensers costs anything between 99RMB and 399RMB, depending on their functions, like making cold water in addition to the de rigour hot water function. If you do not want to use a water dispenser, the other alternative would be to buy big bottles of mineral water from school Carrefour but that would denitely be more expensive.

Laundry
For those living in Shaoyuan, we usually go to and to purchase second-hand washing machines. The washing machines are usually shared among a few people (about 5, usually those living on the same level) and will be put together with other washing machines at the common washing area. A second-hand washing machine costs about 200-300RMB. The other alternative is to send all your laundry to the in school. Each load (5kg) costs about 10RMB. There are many laundry services within school, including dry-cleaning, pressing, washing, as well as tailors to mend spoilt zips or the like. There are more professional dry- cleaners at and , if you want to look after a nice suit. For those living in ZGXY, washing machines are provided by ZGXY, hence there is no need to buy second-hand machines. There are 2 machines located on certain levels, and all you need to do is to pay a certain amount of money to use the machine (amount still currently unknown).

Internet
You can connect to the internet via 2 methods: 1) Wireless router: wireless routers can be purchased from // (all of which are near school) at anything from 150RMB to 1500RMB. With a wireless router in the room, you can access internet without having to use a cable which restricts movement or a schools internet account. Even after installing a wireless router, somebody in the room still needs to log in onto his/her IP portal in order to access the internet. Internet account and connecting the computer to the data port using the internet cable: the internet cable (available in dierent lengths) can be purchased at . You need to transfer money from your to the internet account at the . There are a few types of monthly plans. 10RMB/calendar month for unlimited access to 100RMB/calendar month for unlimited access to 60RMB/ calendar month for 160 hours access to 40RMB/ calendar month for 80 hours access to

Many books have pre-existing discounts of varying amounts for no reason whatsoever, so the price that you pay per book will often not be the one listed on the back.

1) Undergraduate () modules in are mainly divided into , and . One must fulll a certain number of credits for each type of module in order to graduate. Dierent faculties have their own set of rules, so please ask your seniors from the same faculty for more information. General Electives () and Compulsory Modules () are 2 types of modules which everyone in school has to take. are courses which are opened by other faculties outside your own faculty. include (computer courses) for and . Getting to Tsinghua University from Beijing Capital International Airport
1) Method 1: Take a cab to from the cab stand. If the driver does not know the exact location, the route to the school is as follows: > > > > . The cab ride will cost approximately 100RMB. (Highway toll of 10RMB is not included in the metered fare.) Method 2: Take an airport express bus from the airport to (route 6). From the terminal, take a cab to . Most drivers there would know how to get to the gate. The bus ride costs 16RMB while the cab ride will cost approximately 12RMB. Once you enter the northeast gate, the white building on your right is Zijing Block 23. Proceed to Zijing Block 19, Level 1 to check in into your hostel. Your passport and letter of acceptance are needed.

Accommodation
1) Within school: Hostels for international students are situated in the northeast area of the campus, attendants will do basic cleaning of your room once every two days while sheets are changed once a week. There are three types of accommodation available on campus. Double room: Twin-sharing room with communal toilet and shower facilities. CGS scholars are not required to pay rent for such rooms. For non- CGS scholars, 40RMB/day if duration of stay is less than 180 days, 35RMB/day if duration of stay is 180 days or more. AB room: Two single rooms are connected by a small common area. Both rooms will share a toilet and pantry. CGS scholars are required to top up 31RMB/ day. For non-CGS scholars, 80RMB/day if duration of stay is less than 180 days, 65RMB/day if duration of stay is 180 days or more.

Single room: Single room with en suite facilities. CGS scholars are required to top up approximately 31RMB/day. For non-CGS scholars, 80RMB/day if duration of stay is less than 180 days, 65RMB/day if duration of stay is 180 days or more. Registration for freshmen / exchange students


Registration can be done at the Foreign Students Aairs Oce ) at Zijing Block 22, Level 1. The date for registration is 1st and 2nd September 2010 (Wed and Thurs), and the 2010 Fall Semester ocially starts on 13 September 2010 (Monday).

Getting around school


1) There is a shuttle bus that runs around campus and it costs 1RMB/ride for students with student cards (2RMB/ride for non-students). However, as the frequency of the bus is rather low and it does not get to most of the teaching facilities, riding a bicycle in school is a lot more convenient. To buy a bicycle, head to or .

Getting out of school


Bus service 731 which runs from stop to . It costs 0.40RMB per ride using an or 1RMB using cash. Alternatively, you may choose a ten minute cycle, twenty minutes walk or 10RMB cab ride to get to . The subway and many bus services are available at .

Laundry
Washing machines available on each level of the hostel, costing 3RMB/wash. Laundry cards are needed to use the washing machines. They can be bought at either Zijing Block 19, level 1, or at C. Each card can be used ten times, with a 10RMB deposit which will be refunded to you when you return the card, costing 40RMB. Dryers are also available, however, they do not work very well. There are two common areas to hang your clothes on each level.

Internet access
1) You are able to connect to the internet if you have an internet account and if your computer is connected to the data port via an Ethernet cable. The cable can be purchased from the supermarket at the basement of the , also known as C. Internet access in hostels can be purchased at Zijing Block 19, Level 1. You will require your student card and/or to set up an account rst. There are three types of monthly plans: 30RMB/month: 80 hours or a months access, whichever comes rst; 50RMB/month: 160 hours or a months access, whichever comes rst; 90RMB/month: unlimited access for a month.

Supermarkets
There are many supermarkets on and around campus. There is one at the basement of C. , aka Lotus Centre, is a supermarket carrying a wider range of groceries and daily necessities. BHG Marketplace is located inside U-Center (shopping mall to the east of the subway station at ) while Carrefour is located at . Both are accessible by 731.

Medical services
There is a hospital on campus where you will be able to seek medical and dental treatment. CGS scholars can get their medical bills reimbursed from FSAO with valid receipts. Alternatively, at carries a wide range of both Chinese and Western medications. Panadol, however, is not available. There are clinics and dentists at too.

Phone line
Before a new semester begins, China Mobile will hold road shows near . You will be able to buy a mobile phone line here. Alternatively, news stands in and out of school and dedicated shops carry SIM cards too. We would suggest you purchase a SIM card as it oers SMS packages amongst others. Roaming services will be more expensive though. Please keep your SIM cards password as it may be required for future transactions. is preferred over as users are able to use to send out free messages on the computer.

Top up cards are available at newsstands. The phone in the room can be used to call other phones on campus for free. To make out of campus calls, a is required (5MRB). After purchasing a , you will need to purchase credits too.

Postal services
Mailing of domestic letters, packages and parcels and international letters and postcards can be done at C (C6,6). International Parcels and packages can only be mailed from .

Eating in school,
Canteens are marked by yellow dots on the map. A valid is required to eat in the canteens. You can get a at Block 15 (D6, 7) with your student id and/or . Your can be topped up at several canteens on campus.

Water
Tap water is not potable, hence, the need for a water dispenser. Water tickets which can be exchanged for barrels of water (each barrel contains 18.9 litres of water and lasts approximately for a week) can be purchased by calling 62773725. 30 water tickets purchased comes with a free water dispenser, if you do not want the water dispenser, the company will give you a few more water tickets. A deposit of 50RMB is required for a barrel. Alternatively, you may purchase bottles of water from the supermarkets.

Section 3: Wudaokou, Zhongguancun and other information


Introduction
Most universities are located in Haidian District ( ) of North West Beijing, including Peking University () and Tsinghua University ( ). Located within Haidian district are Wudaokou () and Zhongguancun ( ). WDK has a huge number of restaurants, pubs and clubs for students to hang out while ZGC, a.k.a. as the Silicon Valley of China, is denitely able to satisfy your need for electronic devices. They are both served by the subway, with WDK ( ) on line 13 while ZGC () on line 10.

Public transport
1) Taxi: The starting fare is 10RMB for the rst 3km, followed by a jump of 2RMB/km for the subsequent distance. The starting fare becomes 11RMB after 11pm, and 2.40RMB/km. An additional 1 RMB fuel surcharge is added to the total fee for distances exceeding 3km. Bus: Most bus rides cost 0.40RMB using the or 1RMB using cash. Application for can be done at any MRT station. 1 For ocial student concession pass application, one has to apply through ones faculty when the announcement is made for new students to submit their application. The way of application varies across faculties, so take note of announcements and if Chinese students class monitors start collecting applications. A student concession pass allows students to take buses for 0.20RMB whereas for a normal concession pass, bus trips cost 0.40RMB. Subway fares remain the same, at 2RMB for student concession passes. Student concession passes can only be topped up at a small window oce. It is found opposite the east gate and further down in the direction of . Subway: The nearest subway stations for Peking University are / along Line 10 and along Line 4. The nearest station for Tsinghua University is along Line 13. Fares are standardized at 2RMB for a single trip to any station. There are no price dierences between purchasing a single journey ticket and using the , nor are there student rates. They can be found just outside or and they can be a great help especially when taxis are hard to come by in school and you dont feel like going out of school to get a cab. Negotiate with the the price of the ride before boarding the cab. (e.g. a ride to should cost max 15RMB to PKU, or 10RMB to THU) We advise against using them unless you are more familiar with the journey, and especially if you are female and/or if it is late at night. Even so, stick to operators which you are more familiar with, but do note that there will always be a risk with unlicensed operators, especially in cases of accidents.

Places to get Furniture


1) 2) IKEA, located at , a cab ride there costs about 35RMB. , alight at (line 13) and take a short walk to this wholesale market. Stationery, cleaning equipment and utensils can be found here too.

Banking Services
1) Starting a bank account There are many dierent banks in China and the few which we usually use are Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC; ), Bank of China (BOC, ), CITIC Bank () and Bank of Beijing (BOB, ). For PKU: There is another ICBC branch within school but in order to start an ICBC bank account, you need to go to the bigger ICBC branch just opposite . The ICBC branch in school provides basic banking services such as the transferring of money and currency exchange. There is a BOC branch right outside where you can set up a BOC account. As for CITIC Bank, you will need to go to (within ) to set up an account. For THU: has a branch at C while and have branches at . Your passport is required when starting a bank account. A fee needs to be paid for the passbook and ATM card. You may also want to activate internet banking services and phone banking services while starting a new bank account. Bank drafts and Multi-currency account: There are no extra currency charges for opening a multi-currency account but a sizable fee is charged to withdraw the foreign currency that was deposited in the account by a bank draft. Applying for a BOC account will get you both an ATM card and a passbook whereas applying for an ICBC card will only get you an ATM card. will give all CGS scholars a BOC (for PKU and THU) ATM card (no passbook will be given).

ATMs There are many ATMs in school. Even though for all banks under (most banks are), any ATM can be used to withdraw money regardless of bank, please note that a withdrawing fee of 5RMB will be charged whenever you use an ATM card in an ATM of a dierent bank. For Peking University, the BOC ATM is located just beside super mart ; ICBC is within the ICBC branch in school while CITIC ATM is located near the next to . The maximum amount you can withdraw per transaction is 2000 or 2500RMB (depending on ATM). There is also a daily limit to the amount you can withdraw per day. Please also note that a withdrawing fee of 25RMB is charged whenever you withdraw money using your ATM card within China, but outside Beijing.

Foreign Exchange and Telegraphic Transfers (TT) Since most of us receive our allowances in USD or SGD, we would need to change our allowances into RMB. USD can be changed into RMB at the ICBC branch in school; however, it does not allow SGD to be changed into RMB. For PKU, you will need to go to the main ICBC branch outside to change the SGD in your bank account into RMB. For THU, head to the BOC branch at C. There are no money changers (like those we have in Singapore) in China so all currency exchange can only be done in banks. In fact, it is recommended that you go to the BOC whenever you need to exchange currencies. Restrictions are placed on foreigners as to the amount of money we can exchange; please check with the bank for more details. Your passport is required. Telegraphic transfer: There is a Western Union within the school compound (within ) that allows money transfers. Other ways of TT include going to the bank. For detailed procedures, please go to the bank and ask the personnel for details.

Residence Permit () Application


Students, who will be studying in China for more than 6 months and possess a Student Visa/X Visa, must apply for a Residence Permit at the within the rst 30 days of their arrival. (Not required for the students living on campus) It usually takes 5 working days to get the Residence Permit done. However, as there will be many other foreign students from all other universities applying for residence permit at that time, it might take slightly longer (even up to a month) to get back your passport and permit back. For THU, you may submit your application to the agent located at who will do the application for you at a cost of 60RMB. It is a lot more convenient as you are not required to queue up at the oce nor head down another time to collect your passport. It takes about 10 days for the application.
