A folksonomy is a type of distributed classification system. It is usually created by a group of individuals, typically the resource users. Users add tags to online items, such as images, videos, bookmarks and text. History An online diary in the late 1990s became popular. During that time, user centred metadata was born. A bookmark manager site called Delicious was created in 2003. It gave users the ability to tag using a keyword categorisation system. In 2004, Thomas Vander Wal generated the term Folksonomy, a hybrid of f olk and taxonomy. AL Where does Folk and Taxonomy come into it? Martin Lister defines Taxonomy as a particular classification scheme. Folk means the common people from society. The two words put together they mean social classification of social matters. R How people use tags All social media sites such as Flickr, Google Maps and Twitter use tagging. People use it to group pictures and specify users of whom it may concern. It makes it easier to identify who is on screen R Hash tagging With the explosion of twitter, hash tagging has allowed users to receive information that they search for based upon the tags that people use. This allows information to reach the audiences that it was intended to. 2 types of tagging; the @ tag and the # tag. The @ tag allows users to specify people in a post, perhaps friends or people of whom it may interest. The hash tag allows users to define their own post so that people who search for the tag will be prompted with the users post.

At the end of the day, folksonomy proves a positive trait of web 2.0 as it clearly represents the progression of the online development. Also, it shows off the individual uniqueness. However, there are flaws as with any new creations
