AudioLobe
AudioLobe provides an easy and attractive way of slowing down the playback rate of an
audio file without altering the pitch rate. This allows you, for example, to hear the indi-
vidual notes being played in a complex sequence of music, without having them be-
come unintelligible due to changing pitch rates.
When you download AudioLobe from http://www.js8media.com you get versions for both
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (AudioLobe 2.2) and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard ( AudioLobe2.3).
Use whichever one you want, or both.
Looping of sequences of audio can be easily accomplished by setting start and end
points. If, for example, there is a particular sequence of guitar-playing, drum use or
keyboard playing that you are finding difficult to play, you can select the sequence and
then slow it down and hear the music at normal pitch rates and determine exactly how
itʼs being played.
AudioLobeʼs attractive interface allows you to access your audio files and keep links to
regularly analyzed files in itʼs own playlist.
AudioLobe supports most of the common audio formats, including AAC (m4a extension
files), which is the most common format for storing music in your iTunes library. It also
supports MP3, AIFF, CD files, AIFC (AIFF Compressed), WAV, etc. New in version 2 is
support for processing video files too, including QuickTime, MPEG4 and AVI formats.
AudioLobe can be downloaded for free and run in demo mode for an unlimited time. All
the features of the application are available in demo mode, with the only restriction be-
ing that only the first 20 seconds of an audio file can be processed. Purchase of a $20
license from the JS8 Media store removes this limit. (http://www.js8media.com/store)

Purchasing a license
After installing AudioLobe you will be able to use all the features of the application, with
a restriction of processing the first 20 seconds of an audio file. Purchasing a license will
allow you to process the full length of an audio file. There are two ways to do this:
1. Select the “Buy AudioLobe...” item from the AudioLobe menu in the application.
OR
When you click on the Buy Now button at the JS8 Media store page you will be taken to
the PayPal web site where you can choose to confirm your purchase option. If you do
so an email will be sent to you containing your AudioLobe license code. Open Audi-
oLobeʼs registration panel by selecting the “Registration...” option from the AudioLobe
menu. Enter the license code from the email into this panel and click on the OK button.

the application you can set the “automatically check for updates” preference. No per-
sonal information or data from your computer is sent when the software update check is
made.

Using AudioLobe
This shows AudioLobe in action. You can click the toolbar button at the very top right of
the window to make shortcuts available to some of the menu items. To open an audio
file that is not yet in your playlist, click on the “+” button and select an audio file in the
window that is displayed. Change the values for volume, bass, treble, balance, speed

and pitch as required using their respective sliders. The circular buttons with red trian-
gles can be used to reset these back to default values. Any changes you make to
treble and bass will be retained, so that when you next restart the application you do not
need to manually change them again to get them to your preferred settings.
The speed slider alters the playback speed without affecting the pitch rate. Playback
speed can be altered from normal (1.0) down to 0.35 (very slow) and up to 2.5 (very
fast). Similar ranges are available if you want to play the audio in reverse.
Looping of sections of audio can be achieved by clicking on the loop button, immedi-
ately to the right of the play button. It will turn to a blue color when looping is active.
The values in the table will show the current loop start and end points, which default
to the complete length of the audio. To loop a smaller section of the audio, you can use
the cue slider to move to the required part of the audio, and then use the two triangle
buttons to set the loop section. The new loop length will be reflected in the table. This
is very useful for looping a small section of audio, in combination with selecting a slower
playback speed, for gaining a clearer understanding and analysis of the audio.
The pitch slider allows the pitch to be altered. Pitch is measured in units of cents, with
100 cents representing a one semi-tone change.
