MANISTEE Transition is something

everyone experiences throughout the

course of a lifetime.
One of the many magical things that
take place in the Lighthouse Pregnancy
Center Complete Makeover program is
the transition of teenage girls. They often
enter this program as shy, insecure young
girls from the seventh to 12th grade lev-
els, but leave 10 weeks later as poised
young ladies who are confident and feel
good about who they are as a person.
However, this program just doesnt
focus on physical beauty it focuses on
the inner beauty possessed by each of
the girls. It is something that Lighthouse
Pregnancy Center Executive Director
Kelly McColl said often brings about great
revelation and transition for the girls.
It has been fun to see that transfor-
mation, McColl said. We want them
to know their value as a person. It is a
Christian program, but we hit all those
topics that all kids face like drugs, alco-
hol, abstinence until marriage, manners
and the other difficult decisions they face.
It really is about life.
This program has been running for
the past five years, but only the last three
included the banquet and makeover. The
ultimate focus remains on what partici-
pants gain from the first portion of the
program.
The girls were assigned to table lead-
ers for the 10-week period who worked
with the girls on talking about and deal-
ing with many of those issues. Mixed in
amongst the serious discussions were
fun activities that helped bond the girls
together with each other and their lead-
ers.
Handling the organization of the
program were co-coordinators Carissa
Schmutzler and Amy Rankin while serv-
ing as table leaders were Vickey and Jena
Stalmack, Mary Ellen and Jenna Vincent,
Thea Callesen, Nichole Seymour, Connie
Miller, Melissa Hughey, Linda Elo and
Lisa Kutschke. They spent many hours
during the 10-week period working with
the girls and having very important dis-
cussions.
It all led up to the big banquet on
April 21 at the Faith Covenant Church.

However, unlike the
past 10 weeks that were
focused on dealing with
their inner beauty, this
event was designed to
focus on their outer beau-
ty. All 30-plus girls were
given complete makeovers
by having their hair done,
make-up and having their
nails painted.
All the hairdressers
donate their time and
volunteers helped with
the make-up so it is just
amazing how it all comes
together, McColl said.
We have been meeting
since February and today
was just the icing on top
of the cake. We have all
had the opportunity to
love and appreciate all of
them.
During her talk at the
awards segment, McColl
summed up what they are
really looking to achieve
with the program.
The complete make-
over program is meant to
teach young women their
true beauty, McColl said.
There is no doubt look-
ing at them tonight that
they are beautiful, but
is that inner beauty that
we are truly focusing on.
Carissa (Schmutzler) said
to me the other day I just
hope that we touch their
hearts. While this has
been fun for all of us, that
is where our real concern
is with that inner beauty.
So, we look around and
go through that check
list before the banquet.
Hair done check, nails
painted check, makeup
applied check, hearts
transformed check. That
is our priority for each
and every one of you girls
tonight. We will not stop
doing that for as long as
we have memories of this
program.
Prior to an awards cer-
emony, the girls and their
families were treated to a
banquet dinner that was
prepared by the Manistee
County Community
Kitchen under Chef Al
Frye and his crew. They
gave a brief history of the
community kitchen and
how they strive to prepare
healthy foods. Everyone
dined on chicken marsala,
brown rice, green beans,
salad and homemade
Michigan apple crisp.
A slide presentation
featuring photos of the
girls doing many activities
throughout the 10-week
period was shown dur-
ing the awards ceremony.
Faith Covenant Church
Pastor Marc Eix also spoke
to those in attendance
about the importance of
believing in yourself and
establishing a relationship
with God.
Girls were presented
a certificate for complet-
ing the program and gifts
from their table leaders.
They also will receive a
portrait of them dressed up
that was taken by profes-
sional photographer Megan
Savela of Megan Elise
Photography.
A special gift of a pearl
was presented to each
girl by Mary Huskey who
works at Reusch Jewelers
to signify the beauty that
is contained within all of
them. Huskey said it was a
way for the girls to remem-
ber the program and what
they learned from it.
