WHAT DO ENGINEERS DO? Engineers work in different areas in an industry.

Some engineers work in design and development while some work in testing, production and maintenance. Those in design and development normally have the responsibilities of developing and implementing improved ways to extract, process, and use raw materials. They also analyze the impact of the products they develop or the systems they design on the environment and on people using them. Design and development engineers design, plan, and supervise the construction of facilities, highways etc. Engineers who test, produce or maintain usually work in or supervise production in factories. They test already produced products for quality assurance. They discover and fix the causes of breakdowns. They also estimate the cycle time and cost to complete projects. CAREER TIPS: Since engineering jobs in Nigeria are very competitive, to have a fulfilled engineering career, the candidate must learn to develop him/herself. The development will be done in practical engineering areas relevant to the industry he or she is striving to enter or has already entered. Every engineer must seek to be ahead of competition and technology. Even if you feel you are already doing well, endeavour to always update yourself with current technological know-how. This is because engineering technology changes as fast as dates. Most of the young engineers especially new graduates tend to stop developing themselves as soon as they finish school. That is completely dangerous because formal schools cannot equip you for practical engineering works. Have you ever wondered why vacancies for most engineering jobs in Nigeria emphasize that an applicant must have 5 to 10 years working experience? This is because: (1) (2) Employers need Engineers that will add value to their company and not those that will remove value. Employers want practical engineers not theory engineers. Many engineers today are theory engineers. Most of them can easily quote the laws of thermodynamics without pausing but cannot properly fit a light bulb in the house. Why? Because engineering cannot just be taught in a class room. Theory engineers are class room engineers while practical engineers are off-class room engineers. Employers do not want to spend much money on engineering training. If they can get engineers that already know what they are doing, the company will then need to train them only on their specific job responsibilities and organizational culture. Companies need engineers that can start the actual work as soon as possible in order to earn them income. Undeveloped engineer will need some months off for training before the actual work begins and therefore making the company lose some revenue streams.

Employers are also concerned about the damages an undeveloped engineer can cause to their equipments. Theory engineers attract equipment replacement or repairing cost to the company which they do not want especially if the equipments are very expensive and uninsured. What about the losses the company will incur if they will not work for some days as a result of the equipment breakdown? This can be calculated as average daily earning from the machine, multiplied by the number of days which the machine will not work.

Have you also thought about the cost of losing customers as a result of undone jobs? What about the cost of the negative word of mouth which the unsatisfied customers can give to prospective or already existing customers? From all these analysis, can you really blame those that provide engineering jobs in Nigeria? Up to you to answer. The bottom line is, develop yourself. One secret about the 5 to 10 years work experience, be it for engineering jobs in Nigeria or others, is that no one is asking you for full time, big office work experience. You can get the work experience from voluntary jobs. To do voluntary jobs, you have to first have passion for engineering career you are pursuing. Make yourself relevant and companies will look for you. For Apoti Eri Consult to assist in developing yourself,
