Christ and the Old Testament Jesus (the human person conceived in Marys womb) is not evident in the OT. Christ, the third person of the trinity is evident. From a Christian perspective, the OT is not complete on its own because it looks forward to the NT The central themes of both OT and NT are salvation and redemption. Nothing changes between old and new (not even works v faith!) no one in the OT was saved by works. Typology: a copy/shadow/sign in the OT pointing towards something that will be seen in the NT in its fullness. o They can be misused. o Characteristics of Types Must be rooted in history Must be prophetic Must be central to the story of salvation/redemption Must be edifying/enlightening to the individual and the Church Only use types from the NT pointing towards the OT (Melchizedek in Hebrews) B. Christ and the NT Culture Jesus came in o Arranged marriages, early marriageable age (12 for girls, 13 for guys) o Two stages of Marriage Kiddushin: marriage by contract, not fully consummated. This is the stage we encounter Mary and Joseph in. Nissuin: fully consummated marriage. Reasons for two stages = allow the man to build a house and learn a trade. These two stages illustrate the craziness of the virgin birth. o The importance of the virgin birth Written by two gospel writers

Assumed in the rest of the NT It is a witness at the outset of the gospels to the

divinity and humanity of Christ. Baptism of Jesus o Baptism in Johns day walking in to Jordan, immersing, walking out on other shore o Why was Jesus baptized? Identifying with sinful human beings Reception of the holy spirit Confirmation of who Jesus is/going to be The temptation of Jesus o The nature of Jesus temptation was to believe that he no longer needed god that he could do it on his own. o Did not rely on his own strength to overcome his temptation. Relies on strength of god within him. o Slight difference between our temptation and Christs. he was tempted by Satan, we are tempted by our will/from within. o Jesus understands our temptation because he too was tempted at his weakest point. The life, death and resurrection of Jesus o The Kingdom of God is at hand his primary message. o Life marked by obedience to god the father out of love, not legalism. o His life and ministry always moving toward death on a roman cross. o The resurrection 1. The climax of Jesus ministry 2. 1 Cor 15 = theology of the resurrection 3. As a sign of our future resurrection

o After the resurrection The ascension/theophany the cloud he was taken up in A sign of Gods presence Transfiguration Second advent C. The Estates of Christ The estate of humiliation

o When the lord became the servant o Full humanity limited some of his divine powers (e.g. omnipresence) o Phil. 2:5-11 kenosis = emptying of Jesus put aside some of his power so that he cold be fully human. The estate of exultation o When the servant became Lord o Occurs after his death. o Ephesians 4:3-9 and 1 Peter 3:19 o The gospels made it clear that Jesus did fully die on the cross o The resurrection was unique. Lazarus was resurrected but he

would die again, unlike Christ. o After resurrection, Jesus had a glorified body. D. the offices of Christ Prophet the preaching of Christ lived out in miricles Priest Christ becomes our great mediator, High Priest King: ruler over history, the Church and the Kingdom
