Title of Unit: Where We Live Title of Lesson: Our Earth

Lesson Plan # 3 out of 5

1. Summary of the Lesson Plan: Today students will differentiate between water and land. They will also be able to identify both water and land on a globe. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Teachers Edition (74-77).

2. Target Population: 1st This lesson is designed for students at all learning levels. Whole group, partners, independent work

3. Objectives: G.5.1.1 Differentiate between and identify water and land on a map and globe and use the terms
ocean and continent.

G.6.1.1 Sort and group pictures displaying geographic features. 4. Procedure: 1. Get Set to Read page 74 -Compare and Contrast (page 18): help students fill in the chart by identifying details to compare and contrast continents and oceans. -Build on what you know: show students a globe and ask them to describe the shape and to name the globe. 2. Review Vocabulary: -Continent: Noun. One of the seven largest landmasses on Earth. -Ocean: Noun. A large body of salt water. 3. Teach: Earth, Our World: p. 75 -Talk about it: Ask questions about our world, what makes up the Earths surface, and what a globe is. 4. Make sand -Have students rub rocks together to try and make bits of sand. -Instruct students to make observations and discuss with their group-mates. 5. Assessment: How will you know your students understand the concepts from the lesson? Does the activity you are using for an assessment really assess the standard or does it just go with the theme of the lesson?

6. Reflection:

What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? -They need background knowledge from the first two days of this unit.

How will you follow up or extend this lesson? -I would use the study guide on page 19 to extend this lesson.

What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? -For struggling students, I would have students spin the globe and pick a point. I would then explain the difference between a continent and an ocean.

Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson? -I think that there might be a safety problem with letting students have the rocks. I would have to make sure that they arent throwing the rocks at each other and are on task.
