Educational Technology I Lesson Plan: Algebraic Expressions and Equations in Word Problems Alex Ramjattan Standards: 4.

Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. a. Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation b. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions d. Use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions Lesson Objective: Students will be able to solve for the variable in algebraic equations in word problems. Introduce the Learning Activity: 1. I will first start off the lesson by providing simple examples for solving for the variable: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 2. Students will be informed that they will play a game at towards the end of class. If they receive a 10/10 on the game, they will receive 5 extra bonus points on their next exam. Provide Information: The information I will provide are different ways of saying the four basic functions of math and will then go over translations of written equations into words and vice versa. 1. What are the different ways of saying add, subtract, multiply, and, divide? 1. Add: sum, plus, together, total, more than, increased by 2. Subtract: difference, minus, fewer than, less than, decreased by 3. Multiply: product, times, of, by 4. Divide: quotient, divided by, over 2. Translations of written equations into words and vice versa: 1. : a number more than 3 is 3 2. : 1 more than a number divided by 8 is 2 3. 8 less than a number is 8: ) 4. 7 times the sum of a number and 9 is 2: (

Provide Practice: 1. To give the students practice I will tell them to go to a computer, go to my website, click resources, and click on the link for Grade or No Grade. 2. Students will have the choice of playing this game individually or with a partner.

Provide Knowledge of Results: 1. I will go around the room asking how students are doing so far with the game and what their grade is in the game. I will let them know that even though the point of the game is to get the best grade, the only way to do that is to get through the entire game. 2. I will provide written feedback to students using Edmodo. Students will submit how many envelopes there were left before failing or before the time limit I give them is up and what grade they were left with at the end. Review the Activity: 1. I will bring the students back together and explain to them that solving for the variable in word problems is the same as solving for the variable in regular equations. All they have to do is find the key words in the word problem in order to set up the equation. I will give a couple examples: 1. 2 times the difference of a number and 10 is 8: ( ) 2. 2 more than a number divided by 5 is 7: Method of Assessment: 1. Students will play Algebraic Expressions Millionaire online and will then print out their certificate. This will assess how well students have learned the skills that were taught. To get to the game, go to my website, click resources, and click the link for Algebraic Expressions Millionaire.
