About Bethany:
On a beautiful October morning in 2003, thirteen-yearold Bethany Hamilton woke up early, eager to start the
day. The surf was up, and she wanted to join her friend
Alana for a few hours of surfing off the North Shore of
Kauai. While resting on her surfboard, waiting for the next
perfect wave, Bethany caught a glimpse of a shadow
moving in the water. She felt a tug on her left arm and
then saw the blood. Without screaming or panicking, she
quickly called out to her friends that she had been
attacked by a shark.
Bethanys calmness, courage, and faith in God helped
her to survive the trauma, face the pain of losing her arm,
and move on with her life. Within weeks of the attack, she
was back in the water surfing. Within months, she was
competing in a surfing contest.
Bethany has used her experience to tell others about
her faith and the loving God she serves. She is an inspiration to everyone who hears her story.
We hope that you find inspiration in Bethanys story of
faith and love, and that you also find the courage to rise
above.

Devotion 10
Winning and
Losing
Surfing is a big part of my life. I believe
I was born to surf. My family claims that I
have salt water in my veins! Not only do I love
to surf, I love to compete in surfing competitions. I started surfing competitions right when I
started surfing, so Ive never really not competed.
I suppose Im so competitive because I have two
older brothers. Ive always wanted to show them
that I could do almost anything as good, or better,
than they could. When the surf is big, some kids get
intimidated by the size of the waves. Me? I live for it!
Six-foot swells get me stoked!
Surfing is a rush. Every time I catch a wave, I
challenge myself to do my best. So Im always
competing with myself. When my friends and I
are in an official competition, we all try to do
our best. When one of us wins, we all win. And
weve all had our turn at losing too.
After all these years, Ive learned that
sooner or later youre going to fall even
in competition so you might as well
learn from your mistakes and move
forward. The advice my dad
