avengingtheirdisasterattheCaudineforksbyknockingaboutalloppositioninItaly.WhenPyrrhus firstsawtheseLegionshedeclared"ThisisnottheorderofBarbarians!"Thebattlesthatensued werethefirsttitanicclashesbetweenthePhalanxandRomanLegions,atfirsttheHellenistic professionalarmywonbitter"Pyrrhic"victories,mainlyduetotheir"LucanianOxen"(War Elephants.TheensuingattritionandstalematesenttheeverimpatientPyrrhusonancrusadeto captureSicilyfromtheCarthaginians.Buthewasthwartedinthisventurebyanalliancebetween RomeandCarthage,andhavinghisfleetwrecked,hereturnedtoattemptafinalconflictwithRome. HYPASPISTS Pyrrhus'sChaeonianGuardswerecapableofmaneuversthatresembledAlexander'sHypapsists. (AthoughinPyrrhus'sarmyHypaspistwasatitlethatappliedtohisHetairoiorcadreofstaff officers).Ifyouthinkthattheywere'ntactual"Hypaspists"thentreatthemas"soupedup" MacedonianPhalangitesinstead. TheChaeoniansmaybearmedwithPikes,orthrustingspearsandjavelins.Ineithercase,thethey mayformintoeitheraphalanx(iftheyhave16modelsormore)ormayformintolooserlight infantryformations,andmaychangetheir"style"byreforming.Iftheyformintoaphalanxthenthey lose1inchofmovement.Iftheyarearmedwithjavelinstheymayevenskirmish!Chaeonianswith heavyarmormaynotskirmish.
