avengingtheirdisasterattheCaudineforksbyknockingaboutalloppositioninItaly.WhenPyrrhus firstsawtheseLegionshedeclared"ThisisnottheorderofBarbarians!"Thebattlesthatensued werethefirsttitanicclashesbetweenthePhalanxandRomanLegions,atfirsttheHellenistic professionalarmywonbitter"Pyrrhic"victories,mainlyduetotheir"LucanianOxen"(War Elephants.TheensuingattritionandstalematesenttheeverimpatientPyrrhusonancrusadeto captureSicilyfromtheCarthaginians.Buthewasthwartedinthisventurebyanalliancebetween RomeandCarthage,andhavinghisfleetwrecked,hereturnedtoattemptafinalconflictwithRome.
