Activated Carbon

Information Sheet
What is Activated Carbon? Carefully selected raw materials are processed at low temperatures (200-300C) to remove natural volatile components and residual moisture levels. This is the initial carbonization step. This is followed by passing the carbonised raw material through high temperature (900-1000C) activation retorts in the presence of a stringently controlled flow of steam which is used as the oxidising medium. The resulting product is a powerful adsorbent with a range of pores of molecular dimensions. Under a scanning electron microscope the pore development is clearly visible, appearing like a porous sponge. This high concentration of pores within a relatively small volume produces a material with a phenomenal internal surface area (8001600 m2 g-1 BET N2). To put this into perspective, a tea spoon of activated carbon would exhibit a surface area equivalent to that of a football field. It is this vast internal surface area that gives activated carbon its unique ability to adsorb a wide range of compounds from both the gas and liquid phase. The target compound is contacted with the activated carbon and subsequently diffuses into the internal pore structure. The internal surface area of the activated carbon exhibits weak Van der Waals forces which lock the compound into the pore structure. The process of transferring molecules from the gas or liquid phase onto a solid surface is defined as adsorption.

Introduction to Jacobi Carbons Enva are the Irish agents for Jacobi Carbons. The Jacobi Carbons Group has evolved to become a highly respected manufacturer of activated carbon and associated adsorption technology. Jacobi Carbons offer a comprehensive range of liquid and vapour phase adsorbents to meet the performance requirements of a highly diverse market. The range of activated carbons manufactured is one of the most comprehensive available in the world today. This includes AquaSorb, EcoSorb, GoldSorb, DioxSorb, ColorSorb and AddSorb. All materials manufactured by Jacobi Carbons are supplied in full accordance with their ISO-9000 approved quality control procedures. Jacobi Carbons firmly believe that a quality product deserves quality packing, this factor cannot be over-emphasised. All materials are packed to the highest international standards, in polyethylene valve sacks, laminated FIBCs (big bags) and bulk silo tankers. In order to meet the requirements of individual clients, Jacobi Carbons can also provide special packaging on request.

AquaFlowTM AF Range The AquaFlow AF range of modular filter units provide convenient and easy-to-use solutions to emissions from a variety of liquid applications, including process effluent water, groundwater treatment and process liquor purification. The design of the AquaFlow AF range ensures that the liquid is evenly distributed across the activated carbon filter bed. This allows the entire filter bed to be utilised, thus optimising operational life, and preventing channeling at low treatment rates. The bed is permanently flooded with liquid during operation to ensure the media is always prepared for service, even in intermittent use applications. The configuration of the internal liquid distributor system means the AquaFlow AF200 can be easily serviced under backwash conditions. The type of activated carbon used can be selected to provide the optimum adsorption capacity for multi-contaminant streams or for the specific removal of contaminants such as chlorine, ozone or halogenated compounds. AquaFlowTM AF 200

The filter contains 200litres of activated carbon and at peak volume flow rate of 1.2m3/h, an Empty Bed Contact Time (EBCT) of 10 minutes is achieved. This design allows the efficient removal of a wide range of dissolved organic compounds.

AquaFlowTM AF 700

The filter contains 700litres of activated carbon and at peak volume flow rate of 4.2m3/h, an Empty Bed Contact Time (EBCT) of 10 minutes is achieved. This design allows the efficient removal of a wide range of dissolved organic compounds. AquaFlowTM AF 2000

The filter contains 2000litres of activated carbon and at peak volume flow rate of 12m3/h, an Empty Bed Contact Time (EBCT) of 10 minutes is achieved. This design allows the efficient removal of a wide range of dissolved organic compounds.

EcoFlowTM EF Range The EcoFlow EF range of modular filter units provide a convenient and easy-to-use solution to emissions from a variety of medium flow rate applications. Applications include the control of fugitive emissions from bulk chemical transfer, interstitial air sparging, local emission control on process lines and sewage odour control. The design of the EcoFlow EF range ensures that the gas is evenly distributed across the activated carbon filter bed. This allows the entire filter bed to be utilised, thus optimising operational life, and preventing localised heating at points of gas flow entry. The type of activated carbon used can be selected to provide the optimum adsorption capacity or to utilise specifically impregnated products to assist in the removal of certain inorganic gases such as hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, formaldehyde or mercury. EcoFlowTM EF 200

The EcoFlow EF 200 is designed as a single-use unit, which is removed from service when saturated and disposed according to local regulations.
