Title of Lesson: Learning Nevada Geography

Summary of the Lesson Plan: The students will be learning about the map of Nevada. The students will be using the textbook, Nevada Our Home, pages 26-27.

Target Population: grade level: 4th grade skill level: students at all learning levels grouping: whole group (WG), small group (SG), partners, independent work, and assessments

Objectives: G5.4.1 The students will be able to identify and use intermediate directions on a compass rose to locate places on a map of Nevada. G5.4.2 The students will be able to Identify spatial patterns on a map of Nevada, i.e., deserts, mountains, population. G5.4.3 The students will be able to construct a map of Nevada displaying human and physical features. G6.4.6 The students will be able to Identify the equator, Prime Meridian, and the International Date Line. Procedure: 1. T will go over some basic map terms (longitude, latitude, prime meridian, equator, compass). 2. T will then talk about the vocabulary word (natural resources) T having S give examples of natural resources S will write the examples in a socials studies journal. 3. S will then read from the textbook, Nevada Our Home, pages 26-27 as a WG. 4. TW will show a map of Nevada on the ELMO or over head. T will have S suggest areas they know about on the map of Nevada While doing this, S will be look at WS pg 31 a map of Nevada. S will start a map at their desk. 5. When finished, T will explain the project for the week A small report on a geographical area in Nevada (type of land, where it is, animals, types of plants, cities/towns, and natural resources found there

Title of Lesson: Learning Nevada Geography

S will be split into groups of 5 As a SG, they will research a geographical area in Nevada. T will assign the groups their areas Spring Mountains, Lake Tahoe, Mojave Desert, Pyramid Lake, Mount Charleston, and Hoover Dam Each S in the SG will have a job Illustrator>Speaker for the presentation Researcher (2) Writer (secretary) types or writes up the report and finds Editors (2) edit material to be put into the report report orally on Friday. S may have to work on projects outside of the classroom

Assessment: The T will be able to look at the maps to see if the locations that were done as WG are in same vicinity as they are on the T map. It does assess standards G5.4.3. Reflection: The students need to be able to read a map. This will be a whole week long project. The students will be working on the maps all week. Each lesson will have the students adding onto the map. The students who dont understand the map can meet at the teachers table and the teacher can have a small group lesson for those who dont understand maps. There might be a misunderstanding when explaining the oral project due at the end of the week. But the teacher can answer all the questions asked by the students.

Materials: Textbook, Nevada Our Home, pages 26-27 Map from Nevada Our Home: Teachers Resource Package, pg. 31 ELMO or overhead for the map Paper, pencils, markers, crayons, and color pencils
