Lexis: Types of holiday and holiday activities Language skills: Listening, speaking and writing Description Teacher attaches large map to board. Students work in pairs and are given a small version of the map. Students talk about which country they would like to go to and why. Students come up to board and mark their name next to the country they want to go to. As a class talk about any patterns that emerge. Time 10 mins

Activity Warmer

Lexis Using flashcards elicit holiday activities and teach any unknown presentation activities. Drill individually and chorally. Create a board record marking the stress on difficult words. Teacher puts pictures of the 4 holiday categories (snow, city, camp and beach) on the board. Students work in pairs to match the 12 activities to the categories. Feedback to check that answers are correct. Teacher puts pictures of the 2 holiday seasons (Summer and Winter) on the board. Students work in pairs to match the 4 holiday categories to the seasons. Feedback to check that answers are correct. Concept check. Controlled practice 1 Controlled practice 2 Students work individually to complete exercise 1. Feedback to check answers are correct. Teacher introduces exercise 2 and writes the example on the board. Students work individually to write the remaining 9 sentences. Feedback- students check their work in pairs and then as a class. Teacher tells students that they are going to listen to a conversation between a travel agent and a customer (may need to pre-teach travel agent)

Listening activity

Students are to predict the type of holiday that the customer will choose. Listen to the conversation once. Teacher asks students if they made the correct prediction. Teacher introduces listening activity 1. Students listen to the tape once and work individually to complete exercise 1 (tick the activities mentioned in the conversation). Class feedback to check correct answers. Teacher introduces listening activity 2. Students listen to the tape twice and work individually to complete exercise 2 (gap-fill). Feedback. Teacher chooses best two students to read the conversation. Other students check their answers. (Leads onto speaking activity) Controlled speaking activity: Role-play Students work in pairs to create a role-play based on the listening 15 mins activity. Teacher must evaluate the level of class in order to choose the difficulty of the role-play. If students are low level they can replicate the Travel agent-Customer role-play used in the listening with different vocabulary. If students are higher level they can create a more complicated role-play. Feedback- show 2 or 3 role-plays to the class. Teacher pre-teaches postcard and dream holiday. Students are given a postcard template and are to fill in the blank sentences based on their own dream holiday. Students finish writing their postcard. 7 mins
