The tradition of making and wearing Venetian masks comes from the 16th century. The first official Venetian carnival was held in 1262. To put on a mask meant to expand ones freedom over the proclaimed boundaries. At the beginning, and not only during carnivals, you could laugh at the power figures, take business and love risks, gamble and enjoy petty vices. The most recent festivals were held during the 18th century. Many precise regulations on masking and costuming are witness to the widespread of this custom, and there are also records of the fact that the mask makers were highly regarded and had painter status.

is an art venture in the world of papier-mch masks. The artist Bojan Kostic revives Venetian carnival characters, through the use of traditional techniques, materials and motifs in mask-making. Each mask is hand made and uniquely painted.
