Experiment :B-04
Determination of self-inductance of a coil by Andersons method.

Theory :

Figure 1:Circuit connection for Andersons method. Figure shows the arrangements for determining the self inductance of an unknown inductor. When the balancing condition achieved then, current i2 and i3 gives us a relation that, di3 dq = CR dt dt and i2 = CR Hence we have : P [L So, L = C[RQ + R1 (R + S)] Using this equation we can determine the inductance of an inductor. Apparatus : 1. A capacitor with small capacitance 2. A ballistic galvanometer 3. A post oce box 4. A shunt box 5. A high resistance box

L =0.02103 H Result :
Self inductance of the given inductor is (0.80621 0.02103) H Percentage of error is 0.77% as the standard value is 0.8 H.

Discussion :
The uncertainity of this experiment is less than our previous method of experiment(Rayleighs method). Here the circuit analogy was not so easy to understand because the current ow through the circuit is not mentioned any of my text. Although I have some conceptual argument that is presented here equation (6) gives that: r
L R1 C

Xc ( XL ) R1

The selection of high frequency, large capacitance with large R1 makes sure that r, the resistance used to balance the bridge is proportional to the impedence oered by the capacitor. So the balance should be achieved with small r which would result a good sensititivity. Another design consideration necessary is to make R1 large that is we must keep XL >> Xc . Human error in counting the distance of deection adds to errors. This could be improved by taking more data. The scale we used was hand made and may not be properly leveled. In such case, the coil will not oscillate in a vertical plane and will lead to incorrect observations,this unacuracy in calibration leads some error.If the spot of light is not properly adjusted on the zero of the scale, all the observations for n as well as for the C.D.R. are liable to be incorrect, so we take this with much care. And he plugs of the resistance boxes may not be clean, or may be loose due to which the actual value of the resistance introduced in the circuit may be dierent from what is observed. In this procedure using various capacitor it is possible to measure the self inductance with a better precision.
