I liked your active Smart Board slide showing the penny experiment which hooked your students attention.You did an excellent working with what student know and scaffolding information to build on their prior knowledge throughout your lesson. Comments: You are strong Loren in your skill of using what students know and building on their knowledge in an organized way. You provided guided practice on the Smart Board and continually checked for understanding as students actively participated in answering your questions. I liked how you left problems for students to solve on their own after going over several as a class. This was another way to assess their understanding as your lesson progressed. Comments: Your classroom management skills are becoming stronger Loren as you have added some new skills to your teaching. Nice job setting clear expectations for listening behavior at the beginning of your lesson. You also started using "Raise your hand" when asking questions out to the class half way through your lesson. What a difference it made to eliminate the calling out of answers! Your movement during independent work helped to keep the students on task as they worked in pairs. Keep working on smoothing out the transitions throughout your lesson and be sure everyone is listening before you begin whole group instruction and when students are working problems on the board. Comments: Nice job Loren sequencing clear steps when working the problems. I like also how you went over vocabulary words that are important for students to understand such as "increase" and "decrease". The opening of your lesson engaged the students and you closed your lesson by having students tell you the main ideas of inverse variation. You effectively modeled explicit instruction by setting a clear purpose for the lesson, using both direct and guided instruction and allowing ample opportunities to practice problems on the worksheet, in group work and on the Smart Board.
