Module summary Reporting & Journalism This module promotes journalistic skills in identifying subject matter and potential readerships, research, interviewing and editing techniques, on-the-spot reportage, and finding original angles and relevant sources for their stories. Semester: Autumn Prerequisite: Successful completion of Foundation Degree in Journalism or equivalent Assessment: coursework: News story (approx 500 words), Interview story (approx 500 words), News story or interview (approx 1200 words) 13. Module aims The broad aims of the module are: to enhance students' knowledge of a range of journalistic skills that are essential to writing articles, in particular on-the-spot reporting and news writing; (A2) to give students experience in using research sources for story background; (A2) to give students practice in conducting interviews with sources within organisations and from the public to develop stories and story angles.(A3)

Learning outcomes Learning Outcomes At the end of the module, students should be able to: identify the main characteristics of different journalistic forms; (A2) adapt their writing skills to journalistic formats; be able to identify appropriate sources for their stories; (A2) be able to interview sources effectively for their stories. (A3) 15. Syllabus The focus in this module is on journalistic writing. Students will develop skills in identifying subject matter and potential readerships, research, interviewing and editing techniques, on-the-spot reportage, and finding original angles and relevant sources for their stories. A variety of approaches and writing styles will be explored, including news and report writing for newspapers and magazines. The disciplines of writing to precise word-length will be addressed in these contexts. 16. Assessment strategy There will be three pieces for formal assessment. The first will be a reporting story on a live event. The second will be an interview with a head of an organization, supplemented with background research of the source, the organization and the issues of concern at the time. The third will be a story of the students choice (news or interview) that combines the elements learned in the previous stories. 17. 18. Learning and teaching A two-hour block per week, seminar and workshop-based. Students will be expected to write in class and to discuss their work as well as participate in class discussions. A number of inclass exercises will familiarize students with particular skills they will use in their assessed pieces. Students will develop an ability to perceive, analyse and discuss what each piece of writing achieves and how it achieves it. Students will be required to do some out of classroom reporting, either individually or as part of a class assignment.
