1. Weighing Scale

FUNCTION A measuring instrument for determining the weight or mass of an object.

OTHER DETAILS Usually just "scales" in UK and Australian English, "weighing machine" in south Asian English or "scale" in US English.

2. Iron Clamp

Often attached to Iron Stand to hold various equipment such as test tubes.

3. Aluminum Can

A container for packaging made primarily of aluminum.

It is commonly used for foods and beverages but also for products such as oil, chemicals, and other liquids. Sometimes called a rule or line gauge.

4. Ruler

An instrument used to measure distances and/or to rule straight lines. A solid piece of something.

5. Wooden Block

Usually having flat rectangular sides.

6. Micrometer Caliper

7. Force Table

Instrument that measures the thickness or the diameter of relatively small parts; it produces finer results than a vernier caliper. Illustrates the vector addition of forces.

A caliper using a calibrated screw for measurement, rather than a slide.

A common physics lab apparatus that has three (or more) chains or cables attached to a center ring.

8. Slotted Weight

The slots allow them to be placed on weight hangers, which are lightweight platforms attached to a thin rod with a hook at the top.

9. Double Beam Balance

Used to measure the mass of an object.

The slotted mass/weight hanger combination allows a student to quickly create any desired amount of mass, to use in experiments involving force, acceleration, and mass. It was the first mass measuring instrument invented.

10. Wooden Cart

A small wheeled vehicle typically pushed by hand

11. Spring Balance

An apparatus that is simply a spring fixed at one end with a hook to attach an object at the other.

It works by Hooke's Law, which states that the force needed to extend a spring is proportional to the distance that spring is extended from its rest position.

12. Weight Hanger

These weight hangers are designed for use in conjunction with slotted weights.

13. Pulley

A wheel on an axle that is designed to support movement of a cable or belt along its circumference. Give a direct reading of the distance measured to high accuracy. A handheld timepiece designed to measure the amount of time elapsed from a particular time when activated to when the piece is deactivated.

Used in a variety of ways to lift loads, apply forces, and to transmit power.

14. Vernier Caliper

Allows more accurate interpolation, and is the universal practice. The timing functions are traditionally controlled by two buttons on the case

15. Stop Watch

16. Triple Beam Balance

The triple beam balance is a rugged, inexpensive weighing instrument. Used to attach various lab equipment to in order to perform experiments.

It is named for the three beams which carry weights.

17. Iron Stand

Usually a small platform on which you can stand a soldering iron (used to put pieces of metal together using heat). The units of measurement utilized are usually degrees ().

18. Protractor

A square, circular or semicircular tool, typically in transparent perspex, for measuring angles. Sometimes called a rubber bung, and a cork stopper is called a cork.

19. Rubber Stopper

Sometimes bung stoppers used for wine bottles are referred to as "corks", even though made from another material.

20. Friction Board

21. Acceleration Board

22. Demonstration Balance 23. Meter Stick

A heavy compressed impregnated solid paperboard used for making pulleys usu. by cutting into disks that are then compacted together coaxially A printed circuit board that enhances a computer's performance by substituting a faster microprocessor without replacing the entire motherboard and associated components. Use this inexpensive balance to show principles of mass, force and leverage. The meter stick provides a basis for the scale of lengths in chemical relationships.

Also called accelerator card.

Move masses (not included) along the half-meter beam to equalize forces. A measuring stick one meter long that is marked off in centimeters and usually millimeters.
