A father passing by his teenage daughter's bedroom was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was neat and tidy. Then he saw an envelope propped up prominently on the centre of the pillow. It was addressed "Dad". With the worst premonition, he opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands:Dear Dad, It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you, but I'm leaving home. I had to elope with my new boyfriend Randy because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mom and you. I've been finding real passion with Randy and he is so nice to me. I know when you meet him you'll like him too - even with all his piercing, tattoos, and motorcycle clothes. But it's not only the passion Dad, I'm pregnant and Randy said that he wants me to have the kid and that we can be very happy together. Even though Randy is much older than me (anyway, 42 isn't so old these days is it?), and has no money, really these things shouldn't stand in the way of our relationship, don't you agree?

Randy has a great CD collection; he already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. It's true he has other girlfriends as well but I know he'll be faithful to me in his own way. He wants to have many more children with me and that's now one of my dreams too. Randy taught me that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone and he'll be growing it for us and we'll trade it with our friends for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Randy can get better; he sure deserves it!! Don't worry Dad, I'm 15 years old now and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I'm sure we'll be back to visit so you can get to know your grandchildren. Your loving daughter, Rosie. At the bottom of the page were the letters "PTO". Hands still trembling, her father turned the sheet, and read: PS: Dad, none of the above is true. I'm over at the neighbour's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than my report card that's in my desk centre drawer. Please sign it and call when it is safe for me to come home. I love you! ISO 9001 - What is it?
ISO 9001 is the internationally recognised standard for the quality management of businesses. It

applies to the processes that create and control the products and services an organisation supplies prescribes systematic control of activities to ensure that the needs and expectations of customers are met is designed and intended to apply to virtually any product or service, made by any process anywhere in the world

The benefits of implementing ISO 9001

Implementing a Quality Management System will motivate staff by defining their key roles and responsibilities. Cost savings can be made through improved efficiency and productivity, as product or service deficiencies will be highlighted. From this, improvements can be developed, resulting in less waste, inappropriate or rejected work and fewer complaints. Customers will notice that orders are met consistently, on time and to the correct specification. This can open up the market place to increased opportunities.

Why seek certification to ISO 9001?

Registration to ISO 9001 by an accredited certification body shows committed to quality, customers, and a willingness to work towards improving efficiency. It demonstrates the existence of an effective quality management system that satisfies the rigours of an independent, external audit. An ISO 9001 certificate enhances company image in the eyes of customers, employees and shareholders alike. It also gives a competitive edge to an organisation's marketing.

How do you start to implement ISO 9001? What is involved?

Identify the requirements of ISO 9001 and how they apply to the business involved. Establish quality objectives and how they fit in to the operation of the business. Produce a documented quality policy indicating how these requirements are satisfied. Communicate them throughout the organisation. Evaluate the quality policy, its stated objectives and then prioritise requirements to ensure they are met. Identify the boundaries of the management system and produce documented procedures as required. Ensure these procedures are suitable and adhered to. Once developed, internal audits are needed to ensure the system carries on working.

What is OHSAS 18001:2007? OHSAS 18001:2007 is an international standard that is developed by the OHSAS project Group, an association that includes government agencies, certification bodies, national standards, industry associations, and consultants. The British Standards Institution (BSI) currently provides the Secretariat of the OHSAS Project Group. The aim of OHSAS 18001 is to assist organizations in managing and controlling their health and safety risks and improving their OH&S performance. In response to customer demand for an occupational health and safety management system that can be assessed objectively, certified credibly, and recognized internationally, the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) standards are developed for use by all types of organizations and industries. By controlling the OH&S risks that are consistent with their OH&S policy and objectives, organizations can achieve and demonstrate sound health and safety performance and stewardship.

What are the benefits of the OHSAS 18001?

There are several benefits from implementing the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS). The main is that it is the right thing to do! "We need to be good stewards and share a safe and healthy workplace: Let it not be said and said onto our shame, that all was safe until we came"

All of us want to be worthy stewards and work in an environment in which we have done a responsible job of supporting a safe and healthy workplace. It can be stated that OHSAS 18001 serves as a driver and reminder that is everyone's job to support and protect a safe and healthy workplace by preventing injury, preventing ill health and reducing hazards. Not only do we want to protect our employees in the workplace, we want to improve our health and safety performance as an organization. You can accomplish this by doing what you do more efficiently and with better controls because you will have systematically thought and planned out your actions. An important benefit is that you will be able to maintain and improve your position in the market place because more and more customers and countries are becoming health and safety conscious and are beginning to require that suppliers and companies show proof of sound health and safety commitment. The proof and commitment are reflected in the OHSAS 18001 certification of your OH&S Management System.

Why do companies want to pursue OHSAS 18001?

Fundamentally, it is everyone's job to support and protect a safe and healthy workplace by preventing injury, preventing ill health, reducing hazards and continually improving the OH&S performance. Organizations are becoming increasingly concerned in achieving sound health and safety performance, often while delivering cost savings and demonstrating Good Stewardship and Good Corporate Citizenship. Market Pressure Many organizations decide to implement OHSAS 18001 and obtain registration because it assures employees, customers, shareholders, suppliers, regulators and the community at large that the company has an internationally recognized Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) in place. An organization with an effective health and safety system will typically have safer and healthier workplaces, comply with regulations and meet customer expectations better than an organization that does not have an effective OHSMS. Many organizations require their suppliers to have OHSAS 18001 Registration.
