The wines of Romanias Smburesti region have proven their worth in front of
demanding drinkers across centuries, always passing the test. They thus refect the
idea that quality stands on its own merits, with no regard to artifcial boundaries
of time or space.
The frst mention of the Smburesti domain dates from 1521. It was then ruled
by the Rudeanu noble family whose most illustrious member was a chancellor
to Michael the Brave, the prince who frst united the three provinces now
constituting modern Romania.

Winemaking in Smburesti is noted in documents from 1638, and the tradition
was continued by subsequent owners of the land.
By the middle of 19th century, the vineyards were owned by the legendary
Bratianu family, which counts among its members several statesmen and
founders of the modern Romanian state.
Vintila Bratianu, who would be prime-minister towards the end of his life,
called upon famed French oenologist Auguste Joseph Ville to come to Smburesti
in 1906 to recover the vineyards lost to phylloxera by using imported French grape
varieties.

Under the communist regime that ruled Romania for much of the 20th century,
the wines from Smburesti became a mainstay at high-level dinners with foreign
dignitaries.
While it may be mere folklore that Smburesti was Stalins favourite wine,
we know for sure that French presidents Charles de Gaulle and Valery Giscard
dEstaing enjoyed it on their state visits to Romania.

Throughout the years of penury that came at the end of Ceausescus regime, the
wines of Smburesti became a rare and prized fnd even for the connaisseurs.

Following the fall of communism, the Smburesti winery fell into disrepair
until the legend was reborn in 2005, when the VALVIS Holding Group took over the
property.
With the winerys storied history in mind, the current owners have sought to
blend a tradition of excellence with the best winemaking technology available
today in order to introduce the world to the wonder that is the Smburesti wine.
A state-of-the-art bottling line was installed and new equipment is being
purchased, while the vineyards themselves are undergoing a multi-year renewal
programme under the guidance of renowned French specialists from Guillaume
Nurseries.

Terroir
The Smburesti vineyards are living proof that great wine is a wonder of nature
that begins at the root of the vine.
And our terroir has been blessed with exceptional qualities that make it ideal
for winemaking in every possible way.
It is as if Nature has worked to make Smburesti a cradle for great wine for
thousands of years. There is the soil abounding in the precious mineral and
organic elements required to engender the vines. Then, the majestic Olt river
nearby, one of Romanias longest, has bestowed its gifts upon our land.

From days of yore, when the river was much wider, our vineyards have
inherited the boulders that the river had brought downstream.
Now caught in the loamy-sandy earths, these boulders capture sunrays during
daytime, only to release warmth gradually at night, acting as natures own heat
reservoirs.
This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and unhurriedly, boosting their sugar
content and favor in an ideal climate that receives relatively little rain throughout
the year.
Last, but not least, proximity to the Olt river has enabled the Smburesti
vineyards to beneft from an ideal level of humidity over the lifecycle of the vines.

The quality of Smburesti wines has been attested by numerous medals and
awards won throughout the winerys existence. As early as 1891, the Smburesti
wines won medals in Paris, while their taste was singled out by the sommelier of
the 1937 World Exhibition.
All of the wineries submissions won gold medals in 1961 in Germany, while 28
gold medals and 16 silver ones followed at contests in Tbilisi, Ljubljana and Leipzig.
Smburesti red wines also came home with 16 gold medals and 12 silvers from
contests in Paris, Bordeaux, Budapest and Moscow in the 70s.

Most recently, the Samburesti Cabernet Sauvignon won the gold medal of the
Golden Grape national competition in 2010, the gold medal for the category of red
wines at VINVEST national wine contest in 2011 the most prestigious wine contest
in Romania and an even more important silver medal at the Excellence Awards
organized by the Vinul.ro portal.
This last medal was awarded by a jury formed of both Romanian and
international sommeliers and journalists, in a contest organized according to
world-class standards of rigour and secrecy for the samples. It is a testimony of the
quality of the Samburesti wines that such awards were won after a mere few years
following the re-launch of the brand.
And weve only just begun.
History is on our side. The seasons are on our side. The earth is on our side. With
so many gifts, we have no excuses for producing anything less than great wines.
At Smburesti, the journey begins anew.

In Romania, the Smburesti region has always been the cradle of
great Cabernet.
Aware and respectful of this grand tradition, the current owners of
the vineyards wish to introduce connoisseurs to a valuable reserve they
have inherited:
VINTAGE 2002 a well-structured, robust and majestic wine.
Wild blueberries, dried plums, fgs, chocolate and tobacco combine
in a blend that surprises the palate with its elegance and subtlety. It is
how this wine reveals its noble origins, coming to you from the blessed
terroir on the hilly banks of the Olt river.
This is an unoaked wine ft for the most exacting tastes of and avant-
garde clientele.
