1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the Worlds Fair. Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 45 years later, he still stands strong. KENSINGTON RUNESTONE Its a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus discovered America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster? A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of 6th Avenue in Alexandria. Explore the controversy for yourself at the Runestone Museum, located at 206 Broadway in Alexandria. For more information call (320) 7633160, or visit the museums website at www.runestonemuseum.org.
erhaps one of the most eyecatching landmarks in Alexandria is Big Ole a 28foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway. Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area. The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star Worlds Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York Worlds Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled Minnesota, Birthplace of America. The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue. Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of

Boating Safe
Be safe this boating season
Its not hard to figure out why Minnesota, the Land of 10,000 Lakes, is a popular summer destination for fun or fishing on the lakes. Unfortunately, the state also ranks high in the number of boating-related accidents. In 2011 there were 16 boating fatalities statewide, with 67 nonfatal boating accidents. National Safe Boating Week is a great time to refresh your knowledge on the states boating and safety laws and guidelines. Here are some tips to keep from becoming a boating accident statistic: TELL SOMEONE YOUR PLANS. Before you leave on a boating or fishing trip, let someone know where you are going and when you will return. STAY SEATED. In a small boat, resist the urge to stand up. If you must move around, keep your weight low and close to the center of the craft. WEAR A LIFE JACKET. Approved personal flotation devices (PFDs) are now stylish, comfortable and practical. Models are available for all ages and for various activities. Wearing your PFD is the best life insurance policy afloat. WATCH THE WEATHER. Obtain up-todate weather information from a radio or by watching the sky. (Most bad weather in Minnesota comes from the west or southwest.) If you are caught in rough weather, put on your PFD, keep low in your boat and head for the closest shore. In heavy waves, your boat handles best when you head into the waves at an angle. KNOW THE DANGERS OF HYPOTHERMIA. Hypothermia (below normal body temperature) is involved in as many as half of Minnesotas boating deaths each year. Cold water robs body heat 25 times faster than air of the same temperature, so if you capsize or fall out of your boat, immediately attempt to reboard your craft. Most small boats if overturned, can be righted and bailed out. In fact, modern small craft have built-in flotation that will support the weight of the occupants, even after capsizing or swamping. If you cant right the boat, climb on top and hang on. Wearing your PFD will help protect you from hypothermia by decreasing the amount of movement necessary to remain afloat, and helping insulate you from heat loss. BOOZE IS BAD NEWS! Alcohol is involved in about one third of all boating fatalities. Alcohol adversely affects vital body functions such as balance, coordination, vision and judgment. Combining the effects of cold water and alcohol can speed the onset
of hypothermia, causing even good swimmers to drown in minutes, often within a few yards of safety. LEARN HOW TO SWIM. If you want to spend time on the water boating, invest the time to learn to swim or strengthen swimming skills. It could save your life. It is also important to know your swimming ability and not attempt something you are not capable of. USE BASIC RESCUE METHODS. If someone is in trouble in the water, use elementary rescue methods first, such as throwing them something that floats. Only as a last resort should you ever enter the water to save someone. Even then, take a buoyant object like a PFD with you.

innesota waters are threatened by aquatic invasive species. It is illegal to transport any aquatic plants, zebra mussels, New Zealand mudsnails or other prohibited invasive species, or to launch a boat or trailer with these species attached. It is important for boaters to know the laws in regards to invasive species so that they may do their part to prevent their spreading. REQUIRED ACTIONS It is the law that Minnesota boaters take the following actions to prevent the spread of these invasive species: Clean visible aquatic plants and animals from your boat, trailer and other boating equipment before leaving the water access. Drain water from motor, boat bilges, live wells, bait containers, and other boating equipment before leaving the water access. Drain plugs must be removed from bilges and live wells, and all water draining devices must remain open while transporting. Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash. Display. Watercraft owners or operators must display an Aquatic Invasive Species Rules Decal, issued by the DNR,
on watercraft before launching, entering into, or operating on any waters of the state. RECOMMENDED ACTIONS Spray, rinse or dry boats and recreational equipment to remove or kill species that are not visible, before transporting to another water body, especially after leaving zebra mussel or spiny water flea infested waters. Do one or more of the following: rinse with very hot tap water; spray with high pressure; dry for at least five days. FOR MORE INFORMATION For more information, contact the DNR Invasive Species Program, Ecological and Water Resources, at (651) 259-5100 or 1-888-646-6367 or visit the website www.mndnr.gov/invasives.

Early fishing opener hits snag
Activities
MINNESOTAS GENERAL FISHING OPENER is the Saturday two weeks before Memorial Day weekend. Why? Here are the main reasons. IT ALLOWS MOST WALLEYES to spawn before being caught by anglers IT ENSURES THAT the opener is on a weekend, when most anglers can fish IT ALSO ENSURES TWO FULL weekends for anglers and businesses before the Memorial Day weekend. WHAT YOU CAN FIND HERE There are 375 glacier-formed lakes in the Alexandria area, and many are brimming with fish. Heres just some of what you can find here: largemouth and smallmouth bass, black crappies, sunfish, northern pike, perch, walleye, and muskies
fter a legislative proposal to move Minnesotas fishing opener from May 12 to May 5 received mixed reviews around the state, the amendment was withdrawn prior to the Senates vote. A recordwarm March prompted the drive to move up this years opener as walleye were spawning earlier than normal. But fish
experts pointed out that spawning had slowed and returned closer to normal, raising concerns with biologists that fish could be hurt by the early opener. Many anglers also expressed concern for the fish, citing needs to protect the walleyes in Minnesota from being overharvested. Fish are much more vulnerable to being caught when spawning, which in turn could hurt reproduction. So if youre a fishing opener enthusiast, keep May 12 on your calendar and remember Alexandria area lakes are where you want to be.

ou never know what future Major League Baseball AllStars might be playing on the local diamonds, and the Alexandria Beetles, in their 12th season, are no exception. If youre skeptical, just give a look at last years World Series champions, the St. Louis Cardinals. Starting in place of injured Matt Holliday was former Beetle standout Allen Craig, who made a name for himself on the big stage. Along with Craig, the Beetles team has seen plenty of its players continue on into the world of professional baseball. Notable former play-
ers who have gone on to play in professional baseball include: Jeremy Accardo (Giants/Blue Jays/Orioles), Carlos Muniz (Mets), Josh Newman (Rockies/Royals), Nick Hundley (Padres), Danny Worth (Tigers), Casey Coleman (Cubs) and Lucas Duda (Mets). A total of 30 former Northwoods League players were on 2012 opening day MLB rosters. The Beetles franchise began in 2001 and has been a mainstay of summer baseball in Alexandria at Knute Nelson Memorial Park, and each year, has experienced increased attendance, improving to a record high of more than 1,000 fans a night in 2011. In 2011, the Beetles enjoyed their most successful season, winning a franchise-record 44 games, the most in the Northwoods League in 2011. They used a league record-breaking second half to earn a spot in the NWL playoffs just the second time in team history. The league, which is made up of 16
teams around the Midwest, drew a total of 893,441 fans to their ballparks in 2010. Those fans are treated to betweeninning entertainment and some great baseball that features some of the best college players in the country. The Beetles offer fans the opportunity to not just watch these players, but to get to know them. Gates are opened to the field to let kids run the bases after every home game. Fans can get autographs from their favorite players and kids regularly interact with them near their dugout throughout the game. There is plenty of opportunity to catch the Beetles at Knute Nelson Memorial Field. They open the home portion of their schedule on May 30 with the first of a two-game homestand against Thunder Bay, followed by three games with Duluth. The Knute Nelson ballpark has been nestled in the neighborhood surrounding Elm Street and 5th Avenue since 1938. Knute Nelson has been used by a host of different baseball teams, and more than 120 games are played on the field each year. The field is named after a prominent politician and resident of Alexandria, Knute Nelson. Nelson was a U.S. Senator, governor of Minnesota, and a held a host of other political positions in his lifetime.

BLUE CHIP STUDENTS Dirck has instructed several individual state high school golf champions including three from the Alexandria area in the same year, as well as the Minnewaska girls golf team, which earned five consecutive team state championships BIG GOLF HONORS He was named the PGA teacher of the year in 2010, and in 2008 and 2011 was named the Ping fitter of the year. He has also been recognized as one of the top teachers in the state by Golf Digest magazine IN THE KNOW The golf academy will be open year-round for practice or training at the Geneva Golf Club, 4181 Geneva Golf Club Drive GET IN TOUCH For more information on the golf academy, www.genevagolfclub.com or call (320) 815-2227
ts all about the swing. Golf pro and well-known instructor Scott Dirck guided three state champions in the same year and nearly 20 golfers among the state rankings that same season, proving he knows his business and that knowledge is now available to everyone. After instructing area golfers from his home for several years, the new Scott Dircks Golf Academy has opened at the Geneva Golf Club in Alexandria and will serve as a year-round golf center that allows golfers to practice and train no matter what the weather brings. The 4,500-square-foot facility has seven hitting bays and a putting green inside, as well as an outside driving range. The bays are heated and the building is pressurized, so when the bay doors open, the wind doesnt blow in.
Some of the technology used during lessons includes Flightscope, a 3D Doppler Tracking Golf Radar system, which tracks the ball and club head through the golf swing, making it easier to analyze, and Tomi Putt, which records the putting stroke and gives solutions to fix it. Currently, Dirck is the only teacher, but the staff will be growing to encompass some of his past students, including three Colorado State golfers. He also provides club fitting services and gives individual golf lessons. Named the 2010 Minnesota Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Teacher of the Year, Dirck has served as assistant and head pro at various courses. He has also been named the North Central Region Ping Fitter of the Year several times. So if youre looking for some professional advice for your golf game, look no further than Scott Dircks Golf Academy.

After 154 years, the wait is almost over. Were proud to be Minnesotas rst legal whiskey distillery. And we cant think of a better place to make the nest tasting whiskey and spirits. Lush golden corn. Crisp clear water. Rich golden wheat. While youre relaxing by the lake, well use the wealth of natural resources in our backyard to craft the nest distilled spirits this state has ever seen. Hey, youve waited 154 years. Whats one more?
