Year 7 Chemistry Revision Guidelines, Summer Examination The main source of information for the examination is your chemistry

folder but the pages in your textbook, that are given below, and the Moodle Site (code: chem7KES) will help you. The TOPICS and MAIN AREAS TO STUDY to achieve a pass are listed; to achieve an A grade you must, of course, know and understand ALL the work in your chemistry folder. TOPIC TEXTBOOK REFERENCE MINIMUM REQUIRED Laboratory Safety Hazard Symbols Laboratory Apparatus The Bunsen Burner The States of Matter Changes of State Textbook p.20-29 Particles in Solids, Liquids and Gases Diffusion Solutions Solvents Saturated Solutions Solubility Separating Mixtures Decanting, Filtration, Evaporation Crystallisation Distillation, Separating Funnel Chromatography Elements, Symbols and the Periodic Table Atoms and the Atomic Theory, Molecules Metals and Non-Metals Compounds Textbook p.10-11 Textbook p.11 Textbook p.7 Textbook p.8 Three safety rules All symbols and their meanings Names, diagrams and uses Diagram, use, flame types Properties of solids, liquids and gases Names, working out which state from melting and boiling points, heating/cooling curves Arrangement and motion of particles including diagrams Examples and explanation, ammonium chloride experiment Meanings of solute, soluble, insoluble, solution, dissolving Aqueous and non-aqueous solvents, examples and colours Factors affecting speed of dissolving and amount dissolved Definition, drawing and reading from solubility graphs Meaning and examples of pure substances and mixtures

The examination will consist of two separate sections, in different booklets. The examination will be 1 hours long. Section B will contain structured questions. o The marks for each question, and for each page, will be shown in brackets. o Section B will be worth a total of 100 marks. Section A will contain 40 multiple choice questions. o Each multiple choice question will be worth 1 mark, a total of 40 marks. You will NOT be given a Periodic Table, you must LEARN the names and symbols of the elements on p.7 of Term 3 Booklet

Year 7 Chemistry Revision Questions There are many additional questions in the Revision Handout given out in class and in your textbook at the end of each section. 1) Name three important safety rules. 2) Draw and name five hazard symbols, explain the dangers of each. 3) Name all the parts of the Bunsen burner. 4) Why is the roaring flame used for heating and what colour is it? 5) Name the change of state from a solid to a gas. 6) Name two solids which sublime. 7) Name five substances which are gases at room temperature and pressure. 8) What are the properties of solids, liquids and gases? 9) How are the particles arranged in solids, liquids and gases? 10) What does volatile mean? Name two volatile liquids. 11) Name a dark grey solid that forms a violet gas on heating. 12) What is meant by diffusion? 13) What is meant by the terms (a) solute, (b) solvent and (c) solution? 14) Explain the terms soluble, insoluble and dissolving. 15) Solutions are always (a) transparent or (b) colourless? 16) What is meant by non-aqueous? 17) Name the five changes of state. 18) What are the following pieces of apparatus used for (a) pestle and mortar, (b) measuring cylinder, (c) thermometer, (d) spatula, (e) glass rod, (f) test tube? 19) How could pure salt be obtained from rock salt? 20) How could pure water be separated from copper sulphate solution? 21) How could pure ethanol be separated from an ethanol water mixture? 22) What is meant by (a) miscible and (b) immiscible? 23) What is a separating funnel used for? 24) How could a purple dye be tested to see how many individual dyes it contained? 25) How can dyes from different manufacturers be compared with an unknown sample? 26) What is an element? 27) What is the symbol of potassium?
