Gender and Climate Change - what does this mean for ADB?

Quality gender analysis essential (links to research) Invest in womens leadership and voice Use of sex-disaggregated data & gender indicators to inform interventions

Respond to gendered needs in projects

Disaster e.g. floods gender-responsive shelters access to information, early warning systems, alternative livelihoods

Contd

Agriculture/NRM
training/extension on climate change impacts and sustainable agriculture for women farmers; reforestation initiatives targeting women.

Roads
involving women in climate mitigation plans, early warning systems, climate change adaptation to involve women in planting and caring for road-side trees

Renewable energy
introduction of women's labor saving technology and affordable energy sources

Opportunities for ADB for Policy and Legislation

Integrate gender concerns into climate change and disaster-risk management legislation Policy and legislation for gender-equal participation in decision-making bodies at all levels Policy and legislation for equal access to and control of resources e.g. land Gender mainstreaming in National Adaptation Plans and Programs of Action Need for gender equality criteria and access for women in climate change-related financing mechanisms Advocacy for improved gender language in global climate change commitments

BAN Secondary Town Integrated Flood Protection Project

a climate conscious and gender equality approach

Objective: To alleviate poverty and provide flood-free and secure living environment in 9 district towns

Comprehensive sex-disaggregated baseline survey data & database Gender design features included in each project output

Employment targeting for poor women in earthworks

Wage parity, facilities & training for women in infrastructure construction & maintenance 100% target for women's employment in tree plantation & routine maintenance Gender-responsive sanitation e.g. toilet design & location Women sanitation motivators & signatories of certificates Formation of Gender and Environment committees Gender-responsive slum development e.g. women-led community development decision-making

Inclusive growth agenda principle of equality IPSAs preparation of poverty and social assessment, gender analysis and design PANEL approach throughout

Gender equality designs e.g. TSM quotas for women in projects and resources
Climate change designs Equal labor conditions for men and women

Prohibiting child labor

Resettlement design e.g. equal land titling for women on resettlement These are the tools we use to promote human rights especially economic rights
