Estimates
presented
for cutting
expenses
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
In response to an edict to
look into the privatization of
every aspect of township serv-
ices, interim Township Ad-
ministrator Bill Cromie pre-
sented several cost estimates
for the privatization of the
parks department.
In late March, Mayor Randy
Brown said constituents were
asking the township govern-
ment to do more with less.
He tasked Cromie and the
township administration to
find ways to cut costs, starting
with an investigation to see if
privatization of township
services would be an option.
The township parks depart-
ment consists of nine full-time
employees who maintain the
grass on public property in
Evesham, Cromie said.
The personnel costs in the
department are $644,900, with
mowing expenses also totaling
$104,000 for a department total
of $748,400.
Based on several estimates
not official bids, Cromie said
if the township outsourced the
lawn mowing duties to a pri-
vate contractor, it would possi-
bly cost about $479,000 a year.
Mowing the grass 26 times a
year would cost about $425,000,
fertilization $13,000, and re-
placement employees for leaf
collection would be about

Graduate directs show
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
A 1999 Cherokee High School
graduate has returned to the
school that fostered his love of
theater and will be presenting his
favorite Broadway show with the
award-winning school drama
club.
Joe Fisicaro son of Joe Fisi-
caro Sr., a current state board of
education member will be pre-
senting How to Succeed in Busi-
ness Without Really Trying,
with the Cherokee High School
Drama Club for its spring show.
The club will open the show on
Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May
19. A twilight show will be pre-
sented on Thursday, May 24, and
then the production will close on
Friday, May 25, and Saturday, May
26.
Fisicaro, currently a teacher at
Seneca High School, took over as
Cherokee High Schools music di-
rector after being asked by for-
mer director Frank Guerrini in
2010.
Heavily involved in the drama
program when he was in high
school, Fisicaro helped kick off
Senecas drama club when the
school opened in 2003 and he
was hired as a politics and gov-
ernment teacher.
Guerrini invited him to help
with the Cherokee program in
2007 and Fisicaro couldnt resist.
I worked with him for three
years until he retired. That was
very important, because Frank is
a living legend. What he was able
to do for the last 30 years, the
shows he produced they put
Cherokee on the map, Fisicaro
said. Cherokee is a symbol for
South Jersey theater, and when
he asked me to come in and be a
part of it and then be his succes-
sor, it was an absolute privilege.

Team Evesham members
in Police Unity Tour
Three members of Team Eve-
sham are participating in the Po-
lice Unity Tour this year. This is a
ride of more than 300 miles that
goes from New York to Washing-
ton, D.C. When the Police Unity
Tour comes into a town, every-
thing stops, every intersection is
held as the line of cyclists stretch-
es out, everyone rides two by two.
The cyclists are welcomed into
every town by school students,
bands, church bells, and even sen-
ior citizens cheering and calling
out from their wheelchairs.
The school kids all want to
touch the hands of a rider and the
ride marshals hand out Police
Unity Tour flags to the kids.
People salute the riders and
everyone has a smile on their
face, both riders and even those
who have to stop to allow the rid-
ers to pass along the route.
The riders say they ride for
those who died.

Police Department will join
forces with local retail liquor
stores to deter the sale of alco-
holic beverages to underage indi-
viduals and to stop adults from at-
tempting to purchase alcoholic
beverages for people under the
legal age.
The participating liquor stores
in Evesham Township are:
Canals, 305 Route 73.
Wine Works, 319 Route 70.
Canals Bottlestop, 10 Route 70.
Trainos 100, Church Road.
Kings Grant Liquors, 137 Mer-

Members of the Evesham Fire-
Rescue Department's ambulance
workgroup held its first meeting
and it began to map out plans for
a sophisticated set of ambulance
specifications. The goal is to have
a set of specifications ready to go
out to bid before the beginning of
the summer months. Once the bid
process starts, ambulance manu-
facturers from around the coun-
try will put together proposals
and submit them to the fire dis-
trict.
The funding for this replace-
ment program was made avail-
able through a bond vote in 2011.
This bond vote did not increase
the tax rate for residents. The am-
bulances being replaced will be
more than 10 years old when the
new units arrive.
Evesham Fire-Rescue's ambu-
lances respond to more than 4,000
calls for service annually and, at
time of replacement, will have re-
sponded to nearly 50,000 calls for
service.

$40,300.
One-time payouts for unem-
ployment to the nine employees
and other costs would be about
$167,000 for the first year of the
deal. After the first year, Cromie
estimated the township could
save about $269,400 if it privatizes
the services.
However, in addition to grass
and mowing duties, the nine em-
ployees also repair playground
equipment, maintain township
equipment, groom the ball fields,
help with the placement of soccer
goals, help with event prepara-
tion and cleanup and also collect
trash from all of the parks.
While this is not the majority
of their work, Cromie said that if
the department were disbanded,
other township employees would
have to pick up for these other du-
ties.
We need to get a cost analysis
of how this will affect the other
departments before making a de-
cision, Councilman Ken DAn-
drea said after the presentation.
Its also important to ensure
that the township has outs if a
contract is agreed upon, DAn-
drea said. Too many times, towns
have agreed to multi-year deals to
privatize and then found that the
level of service is not up to expec-
tations, but theres no way to
break the contract, he said.
Brown agreed and said the
council has some serious think-
ing to do. Its important to cut
costs, he said, but not at the ex-
pense of cutting the level of serv-
ice township residents have come
to expect.
I cant stress enough the excel-
lent work that our parks guys and
DPW employees do in this town.
It is a rarity that we get com-
plaints about the work that our
employees do. Its first-class and
extremely professional, he said.
On the other hand, we have to be
accountable for our taxpayers
who are demanding that we find a
way to streamline government
and not raise the tax rates in
town.
This is the livelihood of nine
employees in the town, Brown
said, so its imperative the council
makes a decision as quickly as
possible.
Brown asked Cromie to find
some hard numbers and to see if
other township employees could
absorb the other duties of the
parks department.
Bid packages could be expected
by mid to late June.

in our opinion
D
espite all of the political hy-
perbole were going to have to
put up with until Election Day,
theres at least one positive aspect to a
presidential campaign: Neither party
wants to offend voters. Theyll wait to
do that after the votes are counted.
Thats good news if you are trying
to pay back your federally funded stu-
dent loans. Come July, the interest rate
on those loans is set to double.
But thats not going to happen. In-
deed, the Democrats and Republicans
are arguing about how best to pay for
keeping the interest rate at 3.4 percent.
The Democrats say they want to close
a tax loophole. The Republicans want
to go after the presidents health-care
plan. Theres even speculation that the
rate will be extended with no idea of
how to pay for it.
But, and you can bet on it, the rate
isnt going to rise.
Thats because there are a lot of peo-
ple with these loans. A lot of people
who likely will be voting this Novem-
ber. And neither party wants to anger
them. Letting the rate rise and bank-
ing on political spin to blame the
other guy is too risky. After all, isnt
getting elected the most important
thing a politician can do?
Were all for promoting higher edu-
cation and wouldnt mind seeing the
rate stay where it is. What we dont
like is the talk about just doing it and
worrying about paying for it later.
Reuters estimates keeping the rate
steady would cost about $6 billion.
One reason the public is so disen-
chanted with the government is that
the government doesnt have to play
by the same rules. Regular folks, or at
least responsible regular folks, live on
a budget. They spend what they can af-
ford. If they want to buy something,
they find a way to pay for it.
But, this being an election year and
all, the politicians no doubt will go all-
out to make as many people happy as
possible. Unfortunately, in the case of
student loans, that might mean simply
ignoring a bill that is due.
Friendly politicians
One good thing about election years: Politicians want to be your friend
Student loans
Those with federally funded student
loans shouldnt worry too much about
a possible interest rate hike in July.
Its an election year. The politicians
will do all they can to keep you happy.
Because of this years strong male cast,
Fisicaro thought the time was perfect to
perform How to Succeed in Business
Without Really Trying.
Based on the book of the same name, the
musical was written by Frank Loesser for
the Broadway stage in 1961. One of the
most successful Broadway shows ever, its
recently been revived on Broadway with
actors Daniel Radcliffe (of Harry Potter
fame) and John Larroquette both being
nominated for Tony Awards.
The story revolves around J. Pierrepont
Finch, a window washer, who, with the help
of the book, How to Succeed in Business
Without Really Trying, rises from his low
position to become chairman of the board
of the World Wide Wicket Company.
The revival, though, almost made it im-
possible for Cherokee to perform the musi-
cal, Fisicaro said. The rules governing
which shows can be performed, at any
level, are quite complicated, he said.
No show on Broadway can be performed
within a 100-mile radius by any other
drama company by law, Fisicaro said.
Luckily Cherokee High School falls just
out of the 100-mile radius.
The production itself is definitely big.
Its a big production, the largest Ive ever
been a part of. Its an 80-student cast, he
said. The cast is very talented. The talent
level is extremely high. Im saying this as a
fan of theater, not as the director.
The May 18, 19 and 25, 26 performances
will all begin at 7:30 p.m. and be held at
Cherokee High School performing arts
center. The May 24 twilight performance
for senior citizens will be held at 5 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for sen-
iors and students.

tickets to the shows.

May 17, from 11 a.m. to noon at
the Evesham Branch Library of
the Burlington County.
According to a representative
of the class, one of the biggest
anxieties seen in first-time par-
ents is bringing their newborn
home. Bringing Baby Home is for
first time parents looking to learn
the basics of baby care. It in-
cludes newborn appearance, de-
velopment, diapering, feeding
(breast/formula), sleep patterns,
bathing, swaddling and soothing
techniques, umbilical stump and
circumcision care, when to call
the doctor and what you will need
for your newborn.
It will also include a discussion
on what baby products work best.
After taking this workshop,
you will feel more confident and
relaxed bringing your baby home
for the first time. Registration is
required.

like hiking, biking, bird watching
and more.
This public information ses-

watershed protection.
Last year, REI Marlton present-
ed a $9,900 grant to support the
Black Run Preserve.
The Black Run Preserve is Eve-

Pine Barrens forest, wetlands, old
cranberry bogs and streams, lo-
cated between Kings Grant and
Marlton Lakes, and traversed by
numerous existing hiking and
biking trails.

A new program offered by the
Evesham Township Police De-
partment offers citizens an infor-
mal venue to ask questions of po-
lice or voice their concerns.
Officers from the Evesham
Township Police Department will
be available to answer law-en-
forcement-related questions dur-
ing our first Coffee With a Cop
event held 8 to 10 a.m. on Satur-
day, June 2, at the Chic-Fil-A at
220 Route 73 North, Marlton.
The Coffee with a Cop pro-
gram is a unique way to strength-
en the partnership between the
police department and communi-
ty we serve. It is designed to en-
hance communication between
concerned citizens and township
police officers, said Evesham
Township Police Chief Michael
Barth. We believe that this type
of open dialogue plays a critical
role in establishing a true part-
nership between the community
and the police department.
Members of the community
will be able to ask specific or gen-
eral questions related to the
neighborhoods they live in.
The Evesham Township Police
Department places a high priori-
ty on community partnerships
and believes these types of events
can only foster better relation-
ships.
The police department is plan-
ning on hosting the Coffee With a
Cop on several occasions
throughout the year at different
shops or restaurants in the town-
ship.
For additional information,
please contact Capt. Christopher
Chew at (856) 983-1116.
Additional dates and locations
will be posted on the Evesham
Township Police Departments
Facebook page as they become
available.
