Belen High School students aim high, achieve success

Belen Five Belen High School seniors tied to receive an honor bestowed upon those whove excelled academically. The 2012 valedictorians whove achieved a 4.0 grade-point average at Belen High School are David A. Garcia, Arinea Salas, Joseph Sanchez, Patrick Armijo and Emmanuel Valdez. These students have been very competitive in continuously working for this since freshmen year, said Royceann LaFayette, BHS senior class councilor. They all have really strived, LaFayette said. Theyve taken very hard college preparatory classes at high school, (and advanced placement) and honors classes. Garcia, the No. 1 singles tennis player at Belen High, said he worked towards becoming valedictorian after his older sister and brother set the bar. The curriculum at St. Marys Catholic School in Belen, which Garcia

attended, helped him prepare for the heavy workload he faced something he plans to continue on his path to becoming a doctor. They set you in the right direction with a good education and good teachers and showing you how to be a good student, said Garcia, 18. Salas said she placed additional emphasis on everything she did for classes. She attributes her strong work ethic to her father, a former Air National Guard colonel. He works so hard all the time, and he always puts extra into everything he does, and I followed his example, said Salas, the student body president. Although achieving the title of valedictorian was in the back of her mind, the Bernardo resident aimed at maintaining straight A grades to become a doctor. To achieve a 4.0 grade point average, Sanchez said he spent additional time on homework, studying for tests or seeking guidance from teachers on difficult subjects. n See Valedictorians, Page 11

Valedictorians: Long-term goals

major in business management and hopes to become a firefighter. I like the feeling you get after helping someone, Armijo said. Valdez said he aced his classes by focusing on preparing for exams or seeking help from teachers when needed. These teachers are Valdezs role models, he said, since they exude their passion through the subjects they teach something he hopes to accomplish. The 18-year-old senior will be attending the University of New Mexico in the fall to study psychology and plans on going to law school to one day work for a district attorney or become one himself.

It was always my goal to do my best and my best is to be ranking at the top of the class, the 18 year old said. I know what Im capable of and I have been able to do it. The second degree black belt said his long-term goal is to become a psychiatrist. Armijo said he excelled in his classes by avoiding procrastination. The 17-year-old senior said his parents pushed him to do his best in everything I did and succeed in everything I did. The BHS wrestler and cross country runner will be attending New Mexico State University in the fall and will
