Bioengineering: Biomaterials and Biomechanics MSc

This masters course provides science and engineering graduates with a solid grounding in modern bioengineering technologies, together with a strong emphasis on biomaterial and biomechnical aspects of tissue repair and tissue regeneration. Students will gain experience of the problems encountered by academic and industrial researchers, preparing them for a career in an industrial, clinical or research environment.
This course is one of a suite of four closely related bioengineering masters courses that comprise of a common core with the ability to focus on specic aspects of bioengineering. The course covers material optimisation and engineering of biomedical devices whilst addressing biological considerations to optimise device performance. Such an approach has a wide application range, incorporating transitory invasive devices to permanent implants for repair, replacement and regenerative treatments. The principles of the course are highly relevant to both the established medical device sector and the emerging regenerative medicine industry. This multidisciplinary MSc covers practical and theoretical aspect of bioengineering, including: cell-biomaterial surface interactions materials characterisation functionalisation of surface biomechanics and mathematical modelling

Bioengineering: Biomaterials & Biomechanics MSc

Course structure
The course consists of 120 credits of taught modules and a 60 credit independent research project that is undertaken over the summer term. Please be aware modules may be subject to change. Core modules Autumn semester Human Structure and Function for Engineers Cell Structure and Function for Engineers Biomedical Applications of Biomaterials Advanced Biomaterial Structures Advanced Engineering Research Preparation Spring semester Biomechanics Cell-Material Interactions Spinal Biomechanics and Instrumentation Biomaterials Modelling Medical Device Regulation Advanced Engineering Research Project Organisation and Design Other approved modules at an appropriate level may be substituted for individual modules above where the student can demonstrate prior learning of the material in that module. Approval must be from the Course Director. Individual project Following the successful completion of the taught modules, a major individual project is undertaken over the summer. The project area is exible and will be supervised by a member of academic staff. Previous projects have included: bending fatigue testing of an intervertebral disc replacement device quantication of tissue response around a novel biodegradable composite designed for craniofacial bone repair a preliminary study on bilayer and novel sandwich chitosan scaffolds synthesis and controlled degradation of poly-e-caprolactone with lauric anhydride investigating surface roughness & surface chemistry inuences on osteoblast responses in-vitro the effect of mechanical stimulation on induced plant potent stem cells Students can also undertake the project as part of an industrial placement or internship in the UK or overseas, but the students will either have links with the company or apply to the company during the academic year.
