Case Report on Dilemma at Devils Den

BACKGROUND Being a human being we face different dilemma in our life. We have to face various situations where it gets hard for us to take decision. In this case Dilemma at Devils Den, Susan a business student of Mt. Eagles College is also facing the same problem. She is doing the part time job in the campus snacks bar named Devils Den. Devils Den was managed by the external company College Food Services (CFS) in contract with the college. It was operated with the help of few CFS staffs and mostly by the college students. There were some problems in the operation of the place and was bothering Susan as a committed part time of the Devils Den. There were many unethical things going on in the place by the staffs and the friends of those staffs. Staffs were misusing the facilities given to them as the staffs. They were allowed to eat whatever they wanted and how much they wanted but they were crossing the limit. They used to bring in their friends and fulfill their appetite free of cost and also at the end of the shift staffs used to fill in the bags and take food back home. The ones found guilty were also not punished by the student managers with the fear of losing friendship. There might also be some causes or conditions that might have forced them to do so. As per the case it was found that the wages of

the staffs were comparatively low. There was also easy access to the storage room and there was poorly controlled inventory system which lures any staffs. There were also no strict rules and regulations nor good supervision or strict guidelines. PROBLEMS AND ISSUES Susan has been witnessing these problems but was in dilemma whether to report these to the management or not. If she complained then she would have been boycotted from the friends circle and if she did not then her ethics did not let her keep quiet on the issues. Also as only the general part time employee her immediate supervisor were the student managers and they themselves were into the unethical act, she could not also complain. And they were the one to appraise her for the next student manager, so if she complained then her prospective post of student manager was in risk. So the main dilemma of Susan was, to let things go as it is or take step to control the unethical events occurring in the Devils Den. OBJECTIVES Objective of the case is to solve the under mentioned problems in DEVILS DEN The unprofessional behavior of the employees at the Den were in they were allowing their friends to take away food for free The breaking of norms of the organization by taking food home , i.e. outside the work place when they were not allowed to The incompetent behavior of the management which was ignoring the deeds of the DENs employees Ultimately to make the organization come out of all losses n work

in profits PERCEPTION AND BEHAVIOR Susan seems to have belief in the ethical behavior and practice. Her perception is led by morality, ethics and honesty. It was not her cup of tea to protect the college bar from those unethical practices but she perceived it to be bad and associated it with her responsibility and honesty. But she is not able to behave in the same way as she perceived because it was lead by friendship and insecurity. She had fear that if she tried to make the things well then her friends may get angry and boycott her. Customers perceive that it is a good place to fill the stomach in free just by making the student managers and other staffs their friend. Employees perceive that if the management is not paying them well then why not compensating by treating their friends and taking away foods to home. Here they behave in the way they perceive. This is the perception of others; Susan wanted to change in the Devils Den. RECOMMENDATIONS There are couple of thing we would like to suggest her, she should do. a. Wait till she become the student manager and have some power in hand. b. During the time, she can try convince her friends involved in the unethical acts.

c. After she become the student manager, she can form a committee which includes the management, college , ex managers and the current employees to take corrective actions as the implementation of the strategies become more effective. d. She can also make effort in relating the organizational growth with the remuneration of the staffs e. And last but not the least there should be strict rules and regulations, and proper inventory management system.
