Different Forms of Linear Functions In Algebra help ,A linear function is a function with one independent variable and one dependent variable. The degree of both the variables is 1. The dependent variable is normally denoted by the letter x and the dependent function is denoted as f(x) or more generally by the letter y. The function is named as linear as the graph of the function is a straight line. It is also named that way because the ratio of change in the value of the function to the change in the value of the independent variable is a constant. A linear function can be expressed in different forms. So forms of linear functions is given as:
Standard Form of a Linear Function

The standard form of a linear function is Ax + By + C = 0, where A and B are not simultaneously equal to 0. In a given linear function all real numbers can be assigned to x and you can work out the corresponding values of y. However, if two sets of linear functions describe a situation, then it is called a system of equations or simultaneous equations. In such a case the system is true for only one set of values of x and y, subject to certain conditions. It is called as the solution to set of simultaneous equations.
Slope-intercept Form of a Linear Function

This is the mostly used form of a linear function and useful in graphical representation of linear functions. It is represented as, y = mx + b, where m is called as slope and b is called as the y-intercept. The slope tells us the rate at which the value of y changes for a unit change in the value of x. The y intercept means the value of y when x = 0. In the graph of a linear equation, the slope gives the amount of vertical rise or fall of the line for a unit run (one unit horizontally). In short is defined as, rise over run. The y-intercept is the point at which the graph intersects the yaxis.this graph is from algebra 2 home work

The standard form of the linear function can be rewritten in slope intercept form. That is, Ax + By + C = 0 or By = -Ax C or y = (-A/B)x + (-C/B) Thus the slope is (-A/B) and the y-intercept is (-C/B)
Slope-point Form of a Linear Function

The slope intercept form is, y = mx + b.--------(1) Suppose x1 and y1 are one set of values that satisfies the function (graphically if it is an ordered pair of a point on the graph), then, y1 = mx1 + b --------(2) Subtracting (2) from (1), we get, (y y 1 ) = m(x x 1 ) This is called as slope- point form of the linear function.
Two Points Form of a Linear Function

The slope- point form is, (y y1) = m(x x1) ----------(1) Suppose x2 and y2 are another set of values that satisfies the function (graphically if it is an ordered pair of another point on the graph), then by definition, m = [(y2 y1)/(x2 x1)]

Plugging this value of m in (1), (y y1) = [(y2 y1)/(x2 x1)] (x x1) Or, (y y 1 )/(y 2 y 1 ) = (x x 1 )/ (x 2 x 1 ) This is called as two points form of the linear function.
Intercept Form of a Linear Function

Look at the following diagram from algebra home work

The slope of the function m = (b)/(-a) = -b/a Plugging this slope in the slope-intercept form, y = mx + b = (-b/a)x + b Dividing both sides by b, y/b = -x/a + 1 or (x/a) + (y/b) = 1 This is called as the intercept form of a linear function.
Examples on Forms of Linear Function

Example 1 on form of linear function A linear function is defined as 10x 5y + 15 = 0. Express the function in slopeintercept form.

Solution : 10x 5y + 15 = 0 or -5y = - 10x 15 or y = 2x + 3 The slope-intercept form of the given function is, y = 2x + 3 Example 2 A line has a slope of and passes through the point (4, -5). What is the function of the line in standard form? Solution : The slope-point form of a linear function is, (y y1) = m(x x1) Given values are, m = , x1 = 4 and y1 = -5. Plugging in these values, y (-5) = (1/2)(x 4) or 2(y + 5) = x - 4 or -x + 2y + 14 = 0 Example 3 A line passes through the points (4, 7) and (2, 3). Write the function of the line in slope-intercept form. Solution : The two-points form of a linear function is, (y y1)/(y2 y1) = (x x1)/ (x2 x1) Given values are, x1 = 4, y1 = 7, x2 = 2 and y2 = 3 Plugging in these values, (y 7)/(3 7) = (x 4)/ (2 4) or (y 7)/(-4) = (x 4)/(-2) On simplification, y = 2x - 1 Example 4 A linear function in slope-intercept form is given by 6y = -12x + 36

Write the function in intercept form. Solution : The x-intercept of the function a is 0 = -12a + 36 or a = 3 The y-intercept of the function b is 6b = 0 + 36 or b = 6 Therefore, the function in intercept form is (x/3) + (y/6) = 1
