Vegfam - our charity of choice

Vegfam is the charity of choice for VegfestUK and will receive a donation from the money collected at Bristol this year though our collections, tombola, and goody bags. In 2012, we collected and donated a total of 925 to Vegfam following our VegfestUK Brighton on March 17th - 18th, with a further 600 donated during 2012 from VegfestUK team. In 2011, VegfestUK donated a total of 860 to Vegfam. This includes a collection of 300 taken at Brighton VegfestUK in March 2011, 200 at Bristol in May 2011 and 360 donated by VegfestUK team members throughout the course of the year. Big thanks to everyone who donated last year and we very much hope to top that amount by some considerable way this year, targeting to raise at least 2,000 for Vegfam during 2012. Vegfam Feeds the Hungry without Exploiting Animals and is an excellent choice for everyone, especially for vegetarians and vegans who wish to fund projects that help alleviate famine and suffering in some of the poorest quarters of the globe, though projects that are vegan and that do not involve the exploitation of animals. To find out more about Vegfam visit www.vegfamcharity.org. uk or visit stall number 1 at VegfestUK Bristol to pick up some further info about their work.

Talisman
One of Bristols finest, and straight outta Easton, Talisman were one of the UKs top Roots Reggae bands in the later 70s and early 80s. The bands prowess earned them support slots with acts as diverse as Burning Spear, The Clash and The Rolling Stones. They have reformed with the original line up after 30 years apart, to support the re-release of their classic roots single Dole Age on a brand new album, Dole Age - The 1981 Reggae Collection. March 2012 sees the band re-release their first album, Takin the Strain. Originally formed in 1977, Talisman were consummate performers constantly vying for the title of one of the countrys most popular live reggae bands. They left memories of gigs still talked about today. Until now it has been hard to find their LPs such as Jam Rock but the tracks have now been lovingly compiled into a CD containing even the original 7 singles and live cuts from shows, including their appearances at Glastonbury. www.talismanreggae.com

Johnny Clarke meets Soothsayers

Johnny is best known for his classic 1970s work with producers Bunny Lee and King Tubby that spawned massive tunes like None Shall Escape The Judgement, Blood Dunza, Roots Natty Congo and Move Out Of Babylon. A Rastafarian, many of Clarkes songs concern his faith and the beliefs of the Rastafari movement, such as anti-violence and the legalization of marijuana. He helped define the Flying Cymbals period that preceded the Roots Rockers sound of the mid to late 1970s. Clarke was one of the first Jamaican artists signed to Virgin Records Frontline subsidiary in 1976. More recently Johnnys work with Soothsayers and The Red Earth Collective has taken his voice into a phase where his rootical tones are perfectly matched with the bands afro-infused, dubby sound. This all makes for an amazing live experience where Soothsayers new work and Clarkes classic material complement each other to create a set of adventurous dubsonics, classic reggae and pounding afro-beat with a message. www.myspace.com/soothsayers

Dub Mafia
Since forming just two years ago, Bristol-based Dub Mafia have become one of the most popular dance acts in the UK, Europe and beyond. The seven-piece band who blend drum and bass, dub, dubstep, bashment, breakbeat and world music into their own unique sound (with a strict policy of no backing tracks ever) receive rave reviews wherever they play from sweaty clubs to packed festivals. Fronted by singer Eva Lazarus, the band have won over hundreds of thousands of fans over the last year, including show-stealing performances on the main stage at Outlook in Croatia (Europes biggest drum and bass music festival), the Matscher Au Reloaded festival in Northern Italy and a special guest slot in Romania supporting the legendary LTJ Bukem. www.dub-mafia.com

The Magnus Puto

The Magnus Puto are born out of late nights in the Bristol music scene. They are keeping big crowds jumping and gaining a real reputation for dropping heavy beats and tearing stages apart. From guerilla gigs to the Invisible Circus stage at Boomtown, to supporting Plan B at the Pilton Party, and gaining Michael Eaviss dancing feet; the past year has seen the boys gaining a real reputation for themselves in the South West. Innovative and original; The Magnus Puto are influenced by a range of styles spanning electro, dub, ska and hip-hop. Their instantly recognisable sound results from an eclectic group of musicians with different musical backgrounds; expect progressive builds, heavy drops, big swingin brass and stampeding rhythms. www.themagnusputo.com

Susan Edmonds, founder of Pets And Wildlife In Need of Giving takes a look at the modern laying hens of today. With an astonishing look at how their lives compare to those of their ancestors, Susan examines the different types of egg production and how the hens fare. This talk is interspersed with astonishing facts and figures (some of which will be provided by willing volunteers in the audience!), explodes some common myths and provides a humorous look at some of her own experiences with rescue hens. Dr Andrew Knight. Can cats and dogs go vegetarian?

The health hazards inherent to meat-based diets for cats and dogs are extensive, and difficult to avoid. Unsurprisingly, a range of diseases have been described in the scientific literature following long-term maintenance on such diets. However, numerous reported cases indicate that nutritionally-sound vegetarian diets can result in a range of health benefits. This presentation by a veterinarian with a special interest in the subject explores the health and nutritional aspects associated with meat-based and vegetarian companion animal diets, and provides advice for transitioning to the latter, and for safeguarding health. Dr Andrew Knight. The costs and benefits of animal experiments.

Some scientists claim animal experiments are essential for advancing human healthcare. Yet thousands of patients have been harmed by pharmaceuticals developed using animal tests. Some claim all experiments are conducted humanely, to high scientific standards. Yet, a wealth of studies have revealed that laboratory animals suffer significant stress, which may distort experimental results. Where, then, does the truth lie? How useful are such experiments in advancing human healthcare? How much do animals suffer as a result? And do students really need to dissect or experiment on animals? In this presentation, the author summarises more than a decade of research provided in his recent book, The Costs and Benefits of Animal Experiments. See also: www.AnimalExperiments.info.

Rebecca Henderson The Vegan Society Ditch the diets - improve your diet
Are you unhappy with your weight? Its a common problem. In Britain, over 60% of us are overweight or obese. Being underweight is more unusual, but it can also be distressing. The right diet is a crucial element of any weight management plan. Rebecca explains how adopting a balanced vegan diet can support both your weight and your health goals. And shell give you the information you need to do that. www.vegansociety.com

Darren Craddock - Whole food nutrition. Why superfoods must be part of any weight management plan!
In a fast paced world, nutrition often takes a back seat in what we lend utmost importance to. In addition we are barraged with an array of often conflicting information leaving us confused as to what is healthy and what is not. Superfoods help us achieve our weight management goals because they combat an essential stumbling block on the goal path, that of cravings. We crave because we lack nutrition. If we want to stop cravings and perpetual snacking we must address the question of nourishing our bodies and minds with adequate minerals, vitamins and fats that superfoods are a rich source of.

Rod Skinner - Vegan-Organic Growing: Green, Clean & Cruelty-free

In 1996 a group of vegans came together to form the Vegan-Organic Network. We realised that organic food was needed because of the damage to the environment, wildlife and health being done by the wide-spread use of agricultural chemicals. However, nearly all organic food was grown using animal manures, fish and slaughterhouse by-products to replace chemical fertilisers. Buying organic food therefore subsidises the suffering and exploitation of animals. VON has developed Stockfree methods, using green manures, compost and mulches. Come and see how this works and learn how you can do it at home! Its OrganicPlus!

Tony Wardle - Saving the World with Your Knife and Fork
Almost every one of the worlds exploding environmental catastrophes has its roots on the dinner plate! Tony explores how grazing for meat and dairy animals and growing vast areas of soya and other animal feed are inexorably destroying planet Earth. And he offers the solution: change your diet change the world! Tony Wardle is a journalist, writer and award-winning TV producer and helped to found Viva!. Summer brings longer and warmer days, sunshine and holidays. Unfortunately for a large number of people it also brings allergies that threaten to ruin that summer feeling. Redwood Wholefoods

VegfestUK Bristol 2012 would like to say a huge welcome and thanks to the almighty Redwood the UKs premier vegan food producers!
Tim from VegfestUK says
Redwood were our first sponsors back in 2003 so it is fitting that they are back in full effect to become our first ever Show Sponsors for VegfestUK Bristol 2012 as we go into our tenth year. Redwood have always been at the helm of innovative vegan food in the UK, but just recently they have surpassed even themselves with the addition of the UKs first ever vegan pizzas - sure to be an absolutely massive hit and bringing the wonders of plant based food to an even wider audience. I remember how excited everyone was when Melting Cheezly - the UKs first vegan melting cheese - appeared back in 2004 and these pizzas are creating the same sort of stir. Add to this a whole host of other new products including desserts, ready meals, specialist oils, confectionary, sausage rolls and pasties and you can be sure Redwood will be leading the way for some years to come at the forefront of the plant based revolution. And - all credit to the owner and management here - definitely a company that puts its money where its mouth is. Respect.

Last but not least, Redwood will be giving away tasters of its new Strawberry pud, the latest addition to its growing range of delicious Wot No Dairy yoghurt style desserts. Produced from highly nutritious pea protein so free from dairy, soya and allergens, Wot No Dairy desserts also come in raspberry, peach & apricot, plain and black cherry varieties. Made from natural ingredients and sweetened with fruit juice, Wot No Dairy desserts are higher in protein than many dairy-free yoghurts produced from oat or rice. VegfestUK Bristol 2012 would like to say a huge welcome and thanks to the almighty Redwood the UKs premier vegan food producers! Redwood foods are tasty, innovative and entirely free from animal products and they produce everything you could need for a modern vegan home. From their incredibly realistic fish-style fingers and their creamy, melt-in-your-mouth Cheezly, to their Wot No Dairy? dessert, there wont be a hungry mouth in sight! Affordable, practical and very popular with adults and children alike, their products have transformed the plant-based diet, making it easy and incredibly delicious. Redwood will be at VegfestUK Bristol for all three days and will have two stalls - a big stall in the Main Marquee right in front of the main entrance where you will be able to sample many of their products for free - as well as purchase at discounted prices. And then outside in the food arena Redwood will have a catering stand where you will be able to buy burgers, hotdogs, pasties, pizzas and much more fresh off the grill! If youve never tried their superb range then you are in for a treat, believe.

Fabulous new foods!

Throughout the event, Redwood will be giving away free tasters of its fabulous new foods, including its fantastic fish-free fish cakes and fish steaks, both made from 100% natural plant-based ingredients. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, by the year 2030 an additional 37 million tonnes of fish each year will be needed to maintain current levels of fish consumption and to cope with an increased world population of 2 billion more people. With the number of fish left in the ocean declining rapidly, Redwoods amazing new Making Waves Gourmet Fish Style Cakes and Fish Style Steaks offer a more ethical, sustainable and cruelty-free alternative. Like Redwoods ever popular Fishless Fingers, these mouth-watering new fish alternatives are made from succulent fish flakes with a crispy breadcrumb coating and have all the taste of the ocean yet none of the fish. At Vegfest, youll also be able to try Redwoods fabulous new gourmet vegan pizzas, believed to be the first range of vegan pizzas to go on sale in the UK. Featuring Redwoods dairy free Super Melting Mozzarella, these come in three delicious varieties including a Meatless Feast made with Redwoods amazingly realistic Cheatin meats, Cheezly & Tomato and Ham Style with Pineapple. Also on show will be Redwoods new meat-free and more-ish Sausage Rolls, made with the companys award-winning Lincolnshire style sausages, traditional style vegetarian pasties and a wonderful flavour-enhancing vegan Parmesan. With its delicious piquant taste, Redwoods new dairy-free Parmesan-style cheese is the perfect ingredient for adding extra flavour to salads, minestrone and pasta dishes.

Everything in the Redwood range is made from natural plant-based ingredients so free from animal products and derivatives as well as cholesterol, artificial colours/preservatives, lactose, hydrogenated fats and GMOs. This makes them suitable not just for vegetarians and vegans, but also for people suffering from lactose or casein intolerance and anyone looking for a healthier and more ethical lifestyle. Redwood products are also kosher certified and the company itself is halal process certified. According to The Ethical Company Organisation and The Good Shopping Guide, Redwood is the UKs most ethical vegetarian foods firm. Find out more at www. redwoodfoods.co.uk.

Goodlife

Bute Island
Bute Island are the proud creators of the Sheese brand of vegan cheeses, making all their products at their custom built factory on the beautiful Isle of Bute in Scotland. A variety of textures and flavours makes the Sheese range a must have product for many vegan households, and being dairy free is of course an excellent choice for those who are lactose intolerant too. Recently Bute island have brought out some new products - the brand new Melty, in two flavours (Mild Cheddar and Red Cheddar), which (as the title suggests) manages to melt most satisfactorily thereby making it a most excellent choice for pizzas, lasagnes and other dishes that require that essential ingredient - melting cheese. For years vegan have had to forgo this luxury but suddenly, just like the buses there are several really good plant based alternatives in the melting cheese department that have all come along at once, and once again Bute Island leads the way with this innovative, tasty and versatile product that takes another big leap forward into the world of cruelty free healthy options that will become the by word of the 21st century. The Bute Island team are more than just cheese producers though - one look at their website and you will see a plethora of philosophical and wise words and a deep underlying lifelong commitment to a world of peace, harmony and a plant based lifestyle that further deepens their credentials as one of the Worlds leading ethical and very special companies - the real McCoy, as they say. And again Bute Island extend their wholehearted and generous support for VegfestUK Bristol for the 6th year running in the way of sponsorship and support. Events like this would never have survived this long without the support of producers like Bute Island and the vegan public especially should be full of respect for this beautiful bunch of individuals that make up the close knit team that is Bute Island.
