Under Construction

As a result of the heavy monsoon rains, huge areas in the mountains are washed away due to erosion, mudslides and landslides in the hilly regions. Since, the village of Devitar is also an area that is highly prone to such natural threats, we at Ek Pahila Foundation needed to work together with the school community of Devisthan Primary School in order to design a project specically for protecting the school infrastructure during this season. The staircase and balcony construction project has been already completed and currently, the retention/support wall project is underway. Staircase and Balcony Construction: The staircase and balcony construction for the school started on February 15, 2012 and was completed on April 20. As proposed, this project was designed to serve three purposes: a. Act as a retention wall and protect the main building during the heavy monsoon rains b. Provide safety to the students while commuting to and from the building c. Provide additional support to the foundation of the building

Global Giving April Challenge: During the Global Giving April Challenge 2012, Ek Pahila Foundation was able to raise $425 from 9 donations. This is the brief description of our proposal as posted on Global Giving website: Ek Pahila's objective is to help save a school building and a bathroom for 300 students in Nepal from being washed away by the monsoon rains. These buildings are already under threat due to the heavy erosion that has been occurring every year. We will also paint the school buildings so that classrooms are waterproof. This will create a better learning environment for the students. Moreover, we also plan to establish a proper workplace for the principal and teachers at Devisthan Primary School. This amount along with other donations that Ek Pahila has received will help for the construction of the retention/support wall that is currently underway.

This stoneconcrete wall will be 60 feet in length, an average of 12 feet in height and 18 inches thick and its main purpose will be to prevent the lower building from any threat of mudslide or landslide. Maize Plantation: As a part of the incomegeneration program, the school will be planting maize in an area of approximately 7 acres of agricultural land. The fund source for this program was generated from the income earned by selling the potatoes from the last agricultural season in 2011.
