On a recent business trip to Taiwan, I had the opportunity to meet with local quality professionals in Tainan and present on ASQ programs, certifications and the groundwork involved in setting up a local member community (LMC).1 As an ASQ fellow, this is not the first time I have volunteered to present about ASQ while traveling on business in Taiwan. A few years ago, Tommy Tam, ASQ Global new market development director, introduced me to JJ Lyu, a professor at the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan and the ASQ Taiwan country counselor. Since our introduction, I continue to keep in touch with Lyu, and he has helped me arrange opportunities to present among quality professionals in Tainan, including this meeting. This meeting was hosted by Helen Chao of the Chung Hwa University of Medical Technology, Health Care Administration. Twice in previous years, Lyu arranged presentations at the National Cheng Kung University, and I covered topics such as quality in outsourcing, prioritizing process

improvements and process auditing methods. This time, the meeting objective was to provide guidance on setting up an ASQ LMC in Taiwan and understanding more about ASQ offerings. The program started with an introduction and overview of the meeting objectives. Attendees included university professors, staff, students and local quality professionals. There was great enthusiasm among the students and quality professionals, who wanted to learn more about the various ASQ certifications. In my presentation, I offered tips about passing ASQ certification exams and the requirement criteria for various exams, referencing my January 2010 Quality Progress article Test Run.2 The sessions were interactive. Students were particularly interested in certifications that were immediately relevant to them, such as the quality improvement associate and quality process analyst certifications. University staff members were interested in establishing ASQ-endorsed training programs for various certifications.

Quality and the Food Industry in UAE

Maintaining food safety and hygiene in the United Arab Emirates
by Farookh Cooper

When it comes to food, there are two important components to consider: quality of ingredients and quality of process.
-Colin Campbell

At an ASQ knowledge-sharing and networking event in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on Feb. 15, Colin Campbell, executive chef at Abela & Co. LLC in Dubai, presented on Quality and Its Place in the Food Industry. The event was sponsored by Abela & Co. and was attended by about 40 executives consisting of local ASQ members and Abela executives. Abdulkarim Hannawi, CEO of Abela & Co., was the events chief guest. Abela & Co. has firmly established itself as a market leader in food service management. It produces more than 100,000 meals each day throughout UAE. They were the first food service management company in Dubai awarded the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) System certification endorsed by Dubai Municipality as recognition for their dedication to food safety and hygiene.

Sunil Thawani, ASQ country counselor for UAE, kicked off the event with a welcome and introduction of the ASQ local member community (LMC) members. Later, a short video developed by ASQ, The Cost of Poor Quality, was shown to the audience to provide brief insights on the importance of quality across industries. After the video, Campbell was introduced by Nancy Nouaimeh, quality manager at Abela & Co. and a member of the ASQ LMC Dubai. In his presentation, Campbell touched on several key areas, including quality in its early days in Dubai and its evolution, quality systems and their positive impact on the food industry in Dubai, and technical advances in the food industry. When it comes to food quality, Campbell said, there are two important components to consider: quality of ingredients and quality of process.

With the influx and development of top brand names in the hotel and catering sector, the need to adopt a quality food safety system has become essential in the Dubai hotel, retail and catering sector, Campbell said. He provided information about HACCP and its importance in UAE. 3

Attendees listen to Colin Campbells presentation on food industry quality. Among those in attendance include Abdulakarim Hannawi, CEO of Abela & Co. LLC (third from left, front row).

Dubai and UAE have embarked on a progressive and active venture to ensure food quality is maintained at the highest levels. While each Emirate operates in a fairly autonomous manner, the adoption of HACCP is nationwide. UAE government and its leadership are committed to providing appropriate legislation and enforcement of quality systems in the food industry, thereby working to reduce food safety risk. UAE is making good progress in meeting international guidance on HACCP implementation and is seen as representing good practice across the region. Dubai and UAE are well-placed to continue their quest for quality within the region, Campbell said in concluding his presentation.

I contribute to quality by continually learning about quality, implementing the principles and concepts of quality, and sharing my knowledge.
-Sunil Thawani

A short, interactive question-and-answer session followed the presentation. At the end of the event, Campbell was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Thawani on behalf of ASQ.

Ganapathiraman Sundararaman

I also network extensively with quality leaders outside of my organization through ASQ and other industry bodies and institutes, with the motive of promoting quality awareness, and learning and sharing experiences. What do you hope to accomplish during your time as LMC chair? As chair of ASQ LMC Delhi, I hope to build a sustainable footprint for the community of quality professionals to engage in a mutually meaningful manner and contribute to the advocacy of quality. We carry out monthly networking meetings for ASQ members, covering topics in different sectors, including manufacturing, service, education and healthcare. We have these meetings at the place of action at the respective members companies. For example, our healthcare meetings are held at Fortis Hospital, our service sector meetings are held at Max New York Life, our manufacturing meetings take place at Subros Industries, and education sector meetings are held at Amity Business School. Apart from routine LMC networking meetings, specific LMC activities planned for this year include: Holding community projects, which will help members support quality in all walks of life. 5

Working with educational institutions to recruit students into the quality profession and develop student chapters. Holding meetings, which will allow a larger, nonmember community to participate from the industries and institutes, and learn and share experiences.

Evandro G. Lorentz
ASQ member since 1994, currently an ASQ fellow; ASQ LMC Brazil certification chair. How do you contribute to quality? My ASQ fellow citation summarizes my contributions to quality. It reads: For outstanding leadership in ASQ activities; for founding the Brazil international member unit (IMU); for assisting quality professionals for many years by educating and Evandro G. Some of the ways I contribute to quality are: Serving as a professor of postgraduate courses in areas related to quality and excellence in management. Serving on the LMC core team as certification chair. Writing books in Portuguese that prepare professionals for ASQ exams. I wrote a certified quality engineer (CQE) handbook with 12 of my peers that contains more than 1,000 pages divided into three volumes. Helping develop ASQ member leaders in Brazil and communicating with country counselors around the world, especially in Latin America countries. Extending beyond the borders of Brazil. Voluntarily leading the Brazilian Society for Quality and Excellence in Management. The society works to share free quality knowledge and strengthen networking for quality professionals in Brazil. What do you hope to accomplish during your time as LMC officer? As LMC officer, I want to encourage and develop more quality professionals to serve as ASQ member leaders. I believe that serving as a member leader is a never-ending process. In my time serving as a country counselor, IMU officer and now an LMC officer, I realize that it is easier to grow the quality movement with more people participating. After my first term of serving on the IMU board, I didnt run for reelection because I recognized there were new professionals who could serve. From my experience talking to many people in other countries, I have realized it is important for ASQ to adapt to the culture of each nation, prioritizing its social role compared to its role as a company. ASQ must be flexible, but it must maintain its identity as the global voice of quality. 6
