BlackBerry Basic Handling Course ID

Public: users of BlackBerry phones with BB 5 Purpose: During the training, the most important and practical basic handling procedures of the phones are treated.

Interface

Home Screen

In our opinion, this Home Screen is much more practical than the classic Six shortcuts home screen. To get this screen : Menu button > Options > Theme > Select the theme > Layout > Today.

The shortcuts are now still available through the Menu button

The shortcuts you see in the Menu after clicking the Menu button can be moved around to be put in an order you prefer the most.

Shortcuts Menu

Inside the menu, first scroll to the icon you want to move to another position. Now click the Menu button again. Select Move. With the scrollpad you can now move it around. Some of the icons are folders with other apps inside them. To move an icon from one folder to another, scroll to the icon and click the Menu button. Now choose Move to folder and select the folder you want it to place it in.

Notes:

Messages & Desktop

You have two enveloppe shortcuts inside the menu. One WITH a small briefcase (Desktop) and the other WITHOUT a small briefcase (Messages). The Desktop icon gives access to all your Corporate email massages and nothing else. The Messages icon gives you access to all your messages in one single mailbox. So the corporate emails get mixed up with other accounts you have included on your BlackBerry.

New Notifications

Every time you notice somewhere on your Home Screen this red dot with the white star, you know something new arrived on your phone. This can be a.o. a new email, a missed call, a new SMS, a new appointment.

In any screen or program, you can perform a long press on the Menu button

Multitasking

This will open up a window with icons in it. These are the recently opened programs and scrolling horizontally in this list allows you to go to the program of your choice.

Notas:

Open the Calendar and click Menu button > Options > General Options. In the Views section, choose Week at the Initial View. Then Save. This gives you the week view all the time, similar as on Outlook on your PC.

Calendar Week view as default

Left Convenience key

You can change the program associated with the left selection key on the left side of your device. This is the button beneath the charging port. By default it is Voice Dialing. If you dont use voice dialing, it is better to change it to something else.

Menu button > Options > Screen/Keyboard. Scroll down to Left Side Convenience Key Opens, and there you can select a different association.

Notas:

Telephone function
If you want to call a contact from your own personal address book, you do not have to open Contacts to scroll inside that list. Better is to do like this : Simply start typing the name of your contact from the Home Screen. The phone will find your contact immediately.

Smart dial

Speaker

During calls, pressing the key with the small speaker symbol on top, will turn on speaker mode, so everyone can hear the conversation. Pressing it again brings you back to normal telephone mode.

During a call, press the Menu button and scroll down to the following items to select whatever you need.

Accessing other things during a call

To return to the call, press the green phone button.

If you have contacts stored on your SIM card, then it is best to transfer those to the internal phone memory. This is the only way to have them saved, because they will then synchronise with your Outlook and you will never loose them again.

SIM Contacts

Open Contacts > Menu button > SIM Phone Book. Menu button > Copy All To Contacts Check after a while if they have indeed synchronised with your Outlook. If yes, then go back to SIM Phone Book on your device and DELETE all SIM Contacts. You can do this by using the DEL button on the right of your keyboard. Your phone will be much better off, after you have done this.

Notas:

Corporate Address Book Lookup

To find a person in the Corporate Address Book, go to Contacts. Here simply start typing the name of the person you want to find. Then scroll to Lookup: and select it. You will be presented with a list of names from the Corporate Address Book containing the letter combination you just typed.

Time set before switching to Voicemail

You can change the time before an incoming call is diverted to voicemail. This has been set in the system as a standard 15 seconds. Most users, in general, find this far too short to be able to pull out the phone and answer the call. Better is to change it to 30 seconds. On the Home Screen, just start typing following code EXACTLY as it is written here :

*61*+32486191933**30#

and then push the send button (green telephone sign).

If you get a message about Call Forwarding No Reply forwarded to then everything is OK.

From the Home Screen, click the green phone button to access the call log.

Call log

To clear the call log, press the Shift key (aA) and while you keep it depressed, scroll down to select all entries in the list. They should turn blue while doing this. When they are all blue, click the DEL button and confirm by selecting Delete.

Security
It is possible to disable the PIN code. Menu button > Options > Advanced Options

Disable PIN Code

Scroll to SIM Card Press the Menu button and select Disable Security. You will be asked to insert your pincode one last time and from then on you will not be bothered anymore.

If you have setup a password on your BlackBerry, on some devices you can NOT remove it anymore.

Change Password

Just like your computer, your blackberry contains or gives access to vulnerable data. This data needs to be protected, at this stage the only way to protect this is by a password. If your Blackberry gets lost or stolen, whoever has it will have to type a password. There are 10 attempts to find the correct combination. After 10 attempts the Blackberry is wiped completely and becomes unusable. You can change your password to an easy to type or easy to remember word. Menu button > Options > Password.

Auto Lock Keyboard

There are two ways to manually lock the keyboard. 1. Long press the Q key on the keyboard. 2. Long press the Play (or the Mute) button on top of your BlackBerry above the screen. To Unlock the keyboard, you have to use the Play or Mute button again. To have the keyboard lock automatically after a certain length of time, you have to set a Password. Menu button > Options > Password. Make sure Password is enabled and set. Now scroll to Security Timeout and set it to the time you want it to automatically lock the device. You will now have to enter a password every time you want to use the device.

Typing and Text Input

When you type a text, Capitals are put in automatically whenever you start a new sentence. So there is then no need to use the Shift key (aA). When you need to type an upper case letter inside a sentence, just simply long press that letter and it turns into a capital, without pressing the Shift key.

Upper case

Accents

When you need to type an accent on a letter, long press that letter and while still pressing it, scroll up or down. The accents will start to appear.

Symbols

Press the SYM key on your keyboard, right next to the Space bar. All possible symbols will show inside a grid. You can choose to scroll to the symbol you need. Much faster is to observe the letters underneath each symbol. They correspond to the keys on your keyboard. So if you need for example the & symbol, you type SYM and L.

Punctuation

At the end of a sentence, do NOT go for the point on the M key. Instead, just simply press the Space bar TWICE.

Copy / Paste

If you want to copy words inside a sentence, put your cursor at one of the words you want to copy. Press and keep pressing the Shift key (aA) while you scroll towards the words you want to copy. They will turn blue. Then press the Menu key and choose Copy. If you do this with the ALT key, you will select the entire line in one go. Now put the cursor on the place you want to paste your text and press the Menu key > Paste.

Your BlackBerry has a dictionary. It can be used to correct mistakes while you are typing.

Enable Dictionary

To enable the dictionary press the Menu button Input. Show Text Input Options > Check everything! > Save

> Options

> Language and Text

Now go to Menu > Options > Spell Check and check everything. Minimum sized word to check: 3

Changing Languages

Press the Menu button > Options > Language and Text Input. Scroll down to Input Language Selection Shortcut > Shift-Space Enable Quick Selection: No. This means that while you are typing text, using this combination Shift-Space will give you the option to change the input language.

19

Your Notes:

20

When you type a text, the language you use is shown in the upper right corner of the screen.

Using the Dictionary

In the example here, the word language has been written wrong with an R at the end. The device suggests the correct word. The words that are underlined are words that the device doesnt recognize as being English words, since the EN in the upper right corner indicates English spell check. You can scroll to these words and select them to see what suggestions the device gives you to correct them.

You can easily disregard the suggestions from the dictionary by simply continuing to type. If you really want to keep your own word you press the Space bar to continue to type the next one. If you want to use the suggestion from the dictionary, which can speed up your text input considerably, you use the scroll key. In our example here, if I want to use LAND, then I click the scroll key directly. If I want to use LANGUAGE I first scroll to the word and then click it.

Click the Speaker symbol, and in the list scroll down to Set Ring Tones/Alerts.

Setting Ringtones for different alerts

Here you can choose different ring tones for calls, SMS, emails, reminders, whatever.
