. 8 (Combined stresses) Problem 1: Three loads are applied to the short rectangular post shown in Fig. 1(a). The cross-sectional dimensions of the post are shown in Fig. 1(b). Determine: (a) The normal and shear stresses and points H and K; (b) The principal stresses and maximum in-plane shear stress at point H, and show the orientation of theses stresses in an appropriate sketch.

Axial stress at H and K due to Ny: 210 103 y = = 10.94 MPa (compression) 19, 200 CVG 2140 Exercise Problems No. 8 1
Shear stress at H and K due to Vx: ( 65 103 ) (160 60 30 ) = 5.08 MPa H xy = ( 23.04 106 ) (160 )

Problem 2: The state of stress at a point is shown in Fig. 2. By using Mohrs circle, determine:
a) The principal orientation; stresses and their
b) The maximum in-plane shear stress and average normal stress, specifying the corresponding orientation; and, c) The equivalent state of stress if the coordinate system is oriented 30 clockwise from the element shown in Fig. 2. From Fig. 2:
