Bloomberg Quick Start Guide

What is Bloomberg?
Bloomberg is the industry standard for coverage of financial information and economic data around the world.

Key Functions
Market Overview and News: Word Equity Index: Type in <WEI> and <GO> to get an overview of major world indices. Most active stocks: Type in <MOST> and <GO> to see the most active stocks in terms of volume and price movement. Top News Stories: Type in <TOP> and <GO> to see the top news in the market. Note that the white B icon beside the title stands for Bloomberg Exclusive. Most Popular News: Type in <READ> and <GO> to find out the most read news by Bloomberg users. Equities: There are multiple ways to check the quote of a security in the Bloomberg system. Type in TICKER + F8 EQUITY. For example, for Apple, type in AAPL and press F8 key on the keyboard, and hit <GO>. If you are unsure about the ticker, just type in APPLE and Bloomberg will conduct an auto search. Then select AAPL US Equity in the search bar.

Description: Type in <TICKER> <F8> <DES> <GO>. Bloomberg will generate a ten-page description of the security including information on quotes, financial statements, management and other useful information. Event Calendar: Type in <TICKER> <F8> <EVT> <GO>. This will show upcoming important events for the company including conferences, the introduction of new products, earnings releases etc. A great feature of Bloomberg is that you can customize an alert to remind you of that event. Financial Analysis: Type in <TICKER> <F8> <FA> <GO> to gain access to financial analysis on a company, including statement summaries, detailed financial reports, ratio analysis and so on. Earnings Estimate: Type in <TICKER> <F8> <EE> <GO> to check the analysts estimates of a companys future earnings. Research Report: Type in <TICKER> <F8> <BRC> <GO> to read research reports published by analysts. On the right hand side, clicking the document icon will allow you to download a pdf document of the report. Graph: Type in <TICKER> <F8> <GP> <GO> to graph the chart of a selected security. Back Testing: Type in <TICKER> <F8> <BTST> <GO> to screen the trading result using different technical strategies. The system will do the back testing and show the detail entrance position and closing point. Trading based on results of back testing can be very risky because past performance is not indicative of the future! Equity Screening: Type in <EQS> <GO> to use the equity screening function. Then select 1) Create Screen, select the yellow bar, and type in the field you are looking for. For example, I can type in market cap, select the field that best matches my need and hit <ENTER>. Then I need to quantify my search by selecting GREATER THAN or LESS THAN a certain number. After hitting <ENTER> again, you should see an immediate change in the security universe. To view the results, click 1) Results. Merger & Acquisitions: Type in <MA> <GO>. Bloomberg will show current M&A deals going on in the global market. Underwriter tables: Type in <LEAG> <GO>. Click Related Functions to find M&A tables. Users can also see which banks worked on what deals and find out more detail information. Fixed Income: There are multiple ways to check the quote of a bond in Bloomberg system. For government bonds: Type in COUNTRY + F2 GOVT. For example, for GREECE, type in GREECE and press F2 key on the keyboard, and hit <GO>.

For corporate bonds: Type in TICKER + F3 COPR. For example, for Walmart, type in WMT and press F3 key on the keyboard, and hit <GO>. Economic Calendar: Type in <ECO> <GO> to access the economic calendar function. The texts highlighted in white stand for data already released while the yellow highlight is for future statistics. Note that there is a column with R that has bar charts. It stands for relevance, and indicates how important the data is. Users can change countries and date periods to fit their needs. Economic forecasts: Type in <ECFC> <GO> to see future estimates of economic data. Contrary to the economic calendar, numbers highlighted in while here stand for future estimates. Clicking on any of them will direct the user to a page that lists details of the forecasts of indicators including the financial institution participating in the contribution. Word Interest Rate Implied Probability: Type in <WIRP> <GO>. The default page is the Fed Fund Rates so it shows the possibility of rate hike in the future. Yield and Spread Analysis: After selecting a specific bond, type in <YAS> <GO>. It will then display a detailed analysis of selected bond. To graph the yield, type in <GY> <GO>. In addition, <CG> <GO> will generate other charts such as a spread graph. Bond Yield Forecast: Type in <BYFC> <GO>. Users are able to select countries by choosing the regions at the bottom. Bond Search: To find a specific bond, type in <SRCH> <GO>. Similar to equity screening, users can determine their own criteria such as credit ratings and so on. Forex: Forex Homepage: Type in <FXIP> <GO> will direct you to the Forex Home Page which by default displays news, quotes and FX toolbox. World Currency Ranking: Type in <WCRS> <GO>. Before making a currency trade, it is very crucial to know the trend. Usually currency pairs follow obvious long term trends so it is useful to keep that in mind. Currency Ticker Search: Type in <FXTF> <GO> will guide users to almost every single currency in the world. For example, if a user wants to look up Ethiopian Birr, the user will select Africa at the bottom and find the currency. The ticker is listed beside the name, so ETB is the ticker. Bloomberg Generic Quotes: Type in <FXGN> <GO>. Bloomberg offers generic quotes on currencies. It is useful when users are looking for quotes of inactive currency pairs traded locally like the CHINESE YUAN. For these local currencies, Bloomberg only updates the quotes during local hours. Excel Add-Ins
Bloomberg has an excel add-in tool which allows users to download current information, historical information and bulk data to their excel spreadsheets. To launch the Wizard, a user can select Bloomberg, click Real-Time/ Historical, and then select the type of data. Note that for Historical End of Day, the start and end date are both compulsory.

For example, if a user wants to find out the price of all stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the user would select Market, Reference, Analytical, Data Sets, find the DJIA index and click <ADD ALL> <NEXT>.

Then the user can type in Price to search for relevant fields. In this case, the user can double click PX_LAST to add it to the selected field. After selecting the desired format and layout, the data should be exported into excel.
