Pennsylvania. The federal dollars for this program are awarded through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services State Wildlife Grants Program (SWG). Grant recipients also contribute substantially to the project. Ultimately, the program represents a tremendous windfall for beleaguered Pennsylvania wildlife. Complete project applications must be received by noon, June 8. The Game Commission hopes to finalize project selections in July and award contracts in early 2013. The hundreds of nongame species that inhabit Pennsylvania historically have received limited funding at best, DuBrock said. The importance of nongame species has been recognized by the agency for a long, long time. It simply hasnt had the funds required for comprehensive conservation. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH BY Paul G. Donohue, M.D. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I think I may have the illness where a person pulls out clumps of hair. Im not sure of the name. I find I do this after I have caffeine. I have been off caffeine for years, and I do not pull my hair out. I thought this might be helpful to others. -K.H. ANSWER: The name of the condition is trichotillomania (TRICK-oh-TILL-uh-MAY-kneeuh). Between 4 million and 11 million Americans have it. Its called an impulse disorder. I hadnt heard about a caffeine connection. If this holds true for others, they will deeply appreciate your advice. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. and through partnering with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and State Wildlife Grants recipients, we are poised to manage these species like never before. State Wildlife Grants and partnering opportunities provide a much-needed infusion of funding that greatly expands wildlife conservation in Pennsylvania. These funds come at time when nongame research and fieldwork are more important than ever and surely will pay dividends to wildlife managers for many years to come. Because distribution of SWG funds is based upon land area and population size, Pennsylvania has received a large proportion of these funds, ranking among the top six states in funding received to date. However, conservation needs annually outpace the funds available, so competition for funding remains fierce among prospective projects. We look forward to working with our conservation partners across the state to develop the best projects for the sustainability of ecological benefits to the Commonwealths wildlife and residents, DuBrock said. This program provides us with a means to make a great difference, and we aim to do just that. For more information on Game Commission priorities for the 2012 SWG call for projects and guidelines for project applications, visit the agencys website www.pgc.state.pa.us and click on the Call for 2012 SWG Projection Applications photo button in the center of the homepage.

SUGGESTIONS FOR MORE FUN IN THE SUN (NAPS)-You may find you can have more time and money for lifes delights when you heed these 10 hints on warm-weather fun: 1. Stay safe at poolside. Keep each child within arms length at all times; designate an adult as water watcher; ensure that the pools fence is always locked; and install both gate and pool alarms. 2. Liven up the landscape. Use shrubs for form, flowering plants for color and perennials for cheery blooms with little tending. 3. Beautify your backyard furnishings. If mildew appears on outside chairs and tables, wash the fabric and dry it in the sun. Then mix together equal parts lemon juice and salt; spread this on the stain. Dry the fabric in the sun again and rinse thoroughly. 4. Keep toys and tools neat. Two simple rules for avoiding backyard clutter: Air out wet things by storing them in big mesh bags or openweave crates. Toss all the little bits into a clear plastic shoe orga_nizer hung on a fence or nearby wall. 5. Exercise your right to a water workout. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, just 21 minutes a day of exercising in a pool can cut your risk of chronic disease. Strength, endurance and balance are all benefits of using water as the resistance. A typical water exercise session of 40 to 50 minutes can burn up to 600 calories. 6. Keep pool maintenance simple. You can have a pool thats sparkling clear and inviting with just three simple steps. A new product called SmartPAK from BioGuard provides the three-step care system in one simple kit. It includes chlorine, shock and algicide along with easyto-read dosage charts to ensure that busy pool owners have the items they need. 7. Enjoy your special spa time. Place flameless LED candles around the edge of the spa. Take tunes into the spa with a floating speaker that connects wirelessly to an MP3 player. Add a soothing scent to the water with single-use aromatherapy packs. 8. Protect the environment. Always keep your pool water balanced with the right combination of chemicals. Overworked filters and motors waste energy and hike utility bills. 9. Keep pets safe. Before you let a dog jump in, make sure he can get out without damaging the pool or hurting himself. Also check with the vet. Swimming in a pool should be appropriate for the breed. Monitor the water. A typical dog can be the equivalent of about 50 swimmers in the pool, meaning extra vigilance is needed to maintain the chemical balance. 10. Keep things clean. A good pool care strategy involves circulation, filtration, cleaning, testing and chemistry.

In the United States, Memorial Day signifies the beginning of barbecue and pool weather, while in Canada it is Victoria Day. Heres a look at the origins of each of these holidays and traditional celebrations, significance which may get lost in the shuffle as people anticipate the nice weather ahead. Memorial Day: Americans celebrate Memorial Day on the last Monday of May each year. It commemorates the men and women who died while in military service and was previously known as Decoration Day. Initially designated to honor Union soldiers who fought in the American Civil War, Memorial Day has since been expanded to embrace fallen American soldiers in all wars. There are many traditional observances on Memorial Day. Visits to cemeteries and memorials are made across the country. Volunteers often place American flags on the graves of fallen veterans. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time, and the president visits Arlington National Cemetery. Flags around the country are also flown at half-mast from dawn until noon as an honor to lost heroes. Some towns host Memorial Day parades and other fanfare. The National Memorial Day Concert takes place on the west lawn of the United States Capitol. Music is performed, and respect is paid to the men and women who gave their lives for their country. Victoria Day: This is a Canadian statutory holiday that celebrates the birthday of Englands Queen Victoria and also commemorates the current Canadian sovereigns official birthday. Victoria Day is celebrated on the last Monday before or on May 24. It is sometimes known as May two-four, or in French, Fete de la reine. Through the years Victoria Day moved around a bit to celebrate current monarchs birthdays in Canada. It was also known as Empire Day, Commonwealth Day and then later again Victoria Day and kept at or around May 24.

Tradition states that where two flagpoles are present, the Royal Union Flag must be flown in addition to the national flag. Parades are often conducted, with the most prominent taking place in Victoria, British Columbia. Fireworks and other celebrations are commonplace. Victoria Day is also the mark of cottage season around Canada. Thats where cottage owners reverse the winterization of their properties and embrace the warmer weather. Gardeners may also begin to plant, as its fairly certain that the frosts have gone. ***** DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS *** LEFTOVER WINE Freeze the wine left over after company (that bit in the bottle). Put it in zipper baggies to add to your sauces, etc. -Judi *** MORE ABSORBENT TOWELS This may not save a bunch of money, but it does make a difference after a shower. When you wash a load of towels, do not put any fabric softener in the washer or the dryer. The towels will be much more absorbent. -Linda N. *** NATURAL WEED REMOVAL I use a kettle of boiling water to kill the weeds that grow in the cracks of our sidewalk. I just pour it on the weeds (especially at the root) every day until they die. This works pretty good and is safe for kids and pets after treatment. -Melissa W. *** CHEAP STRESS REDUCER I found a great way to reduce stress! I went to a local dollar store and bought a coloring book and crayons. Its unbelievable that just coloring can reduce stress. Its great and inexpensive! Plus, it gave me the chance to be a kid again. -Lilly *** A CLEANER MICROWAVE Microwaving some foods, like baked beans or soup, can leave a mess in your microwave from all the splatters. Instead of wasting a piece of wax paper or plastic wrap to cover the food, use a plate instead. If a tight seal is not required, this also works when covering foods in the refrigerator. -Kristin Z. *** HANDY LAUNDRY STAIN TREATMENT I filled an empty hand soap dispenser with laundry detergent and put it in the bathroom. Naturally, I marked it so everyone knows its detergent, not hand soap. Now when my preschooler undresses for a bath, I can hand scrub the stains out right away and watch her bathe at the same time. It also gets the stains out before they set in. -B.

DRINK WATER-TO YOUR HEALTH! (NAPS)-Are you looking for a simple way to lead a healthier life? Skip the fad diets and trendy health fixes and focus on drinking enough water every day. Several health organizations recommend drinking eight 8-ounce glasses a day to help your body run more efficiently. When you consider that your blood is 92 percent water and your brain and muscles are 75 percent water, it only makes sense that you need to stay hydrated. Here are some reasons why drinking water will have you feeling and looking better, while also making you healthier. Natures energy drink. Its easy to down an energy drink or pop some vitamins when youre feeling sluggish. However, water balances your electrolytes, controls your blood pressure, cleans the toxins from your kidneys and gives you more energy by helping your blood maintain a healthy volume. Proper hydration also regulates your body temperature and can help prevent heat stroke or hypothermia. Improve your moves with water. If you ache more than usual after a workout, you may need to up your water intake. Water acts as a natural shock absorber for your organs and helps lubricate your joints. Proper

GREAT GIFT IDEAS FOR DAD Fathers Day is right around the corner and that means many children, spouses and other family members will be scrambling to locate the perfect gifts for the men in their lives. Put away those coupons for neckties and remote control caddies. Theres a good chance Dad wants something a little less clich and more in tune with his interests. If you think carefully about gift ideas, theres bound to be something that will be a perfect fit. Sports- If Dad follows a particular team or sport, gifts inspired by his love of a favorite team are a surefire bet for success. Team jerseys, game memorabilia, tickets to the next at-home game, or an expanded satellite dish or cable TV sports programming package are some gift ideas that will coordinate with a sports theme. Some dads also may be content to simply hit the links or spend a few hours at the batting cages. Personalized Gifts- Personalized gifts can show that special man in your life that you care about him in a special way. Instead of a run-ofthe-mill item pulled off a store shelf, a personalized gift can feature a name, date or sentiment right on the gift itself. Think about giving Dad a personalized plaque that designates his work area in the garage or a pocket lighter or photo frame engraved with a special message or his name. An embroidered bath robe, or a golf bag embroidered with his initials may also be a special treat. Fit for Foodies- As the adage goes, The way to a mans heart is through his stomach. Take advantage of these words of wisdom by gifting your Dad with food or culinary-themed items. Dad may be an amateur chef and will enjoy a cookbook by his favorite Food NetworkTM personality. Or he may have a restaurant he insists on going to all the time, so guaranteeing a gift card to said restaurant will be a hit. If Dad appreciates not only the taste, but also the culture of food, plan a tour of food shops in the area or go on a wine- and cheese-tasting adventure. Gear Heads- Some dads get revved up about automotive gifts, especially if they spend the weekends pampering their prized cars or trucks. If he tends to have a wrench in hand and head under the hood, treat your father to some new supplies for his automotive pursuits. Quality car waxes and upholstery cleaners are always in demand. Or give him a gift certificate to his favorite hand-wash, auto-detailing center. Gas station gift cards or a new ratchet set are other good auto gift ideas. Techies- Some dads get excited about the latest tablets or smartphones. They may keep abreast of virus-detection software or think the technological gadgets sold in those specialty magazines and mall stores are must-haves. Chances are if you spend enough time with Dad you know just what he likes to dabble in, and you can get him an electronic device hell find invaluable. Although it may seem difficult on the surface to find a gift for Dad that he truly will enjoy and use, all it takes is a close examination of his likes to find something appropriate.

Martin Buxbaum *** It is not the years in your life, but the life in your years that counts. Adlai Stevenson *** Wisdom doesnt necessarily come with age. Sometimes age just shows up all by itself. * * * People in France, Ireland, India and Spain, as well as Scotland, play the bagpipe. The ancient Romans used a form of bagpipe that was used in Persia, Turkey and Palestine in the A.D. 100s. * * * The character most frequently portrayed on the screen is Sherlock Holmes, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. * * * Johann Sebastian Bach was not just considered the greatest genius of baroque music, he was also a father to 20 children, several of whom became musicians. * * * Snails travel on roadways that they make themselves. A snail produces a sticky liquid on the underside of its flat foot. The rim of its foot skids along on the liquid with a rippling motion. Wave after wave of this motion pushes the snail along. * * * If you were in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and traveled due North, the first foreign country you would hit would be the United States. Ten Tips For Family Fun In The Pool And Sun (NAPSA)-For a hot time in warm weather, consider these 10 tips, time-savers, water-care ideas, and maintenance and safety suggestions for backyard living: 1. Safety first. Keep each child within arm's length at all times; designate an adult as water watcher; ensure that the pool's fence is always locked; and install both gate and pool alarms. 2. Dress up the landscape. Use shrubs for form, foliage-heavy plants for color and sturdy perennials for cheery blooms with little tending. 3. Add years to backyard furnishings. If mildew spots appear on outside chairs and tables, wash the fabric according to manufacturer directions and dry in the sun. Then mix together equal parts lemon juice and salt; spread on the stain. Dry in the sun again and rinse thoroughly. 4. Organize backyard toys and tools. Two simple storage rules for keeping backyard clutter down: Air out wet things by storing them in big mesh bags or open-weave crates. Toss all the little bits into a clear plastic shoe organizer hung on a fence or nearby wall. 5. Try a water workout. 6. Create a backyard oasis. 7. Soak in a sensational spa. Place flameless LED candles around the edge of the spa. Take tunes into the spa with a floating speaker that connects wirelessly to an MP3 player. Add a soothing scent to the water with single-use aromatherapy packs. 8. Be more environmentally friendly. Always keep your pool water balanced with the right combination of chemicals. Overworked filters and motors waste energy and hike utility bills. 9.Help pets swim safely. 10. Maintain a pristine pool. A good pool-care strategy involves circulation, filtration, cleaning, testing and chemistry. A BioGuard dealer can provide computerized water testing and recommend the best care schedule for your pool. A clean and attractive pool can be a great place for your family to spend quality time. * * *

Frozen Dessert Delights (NAPSA)-If your family is like most, you really love ice cream and novelties-98 percent of all U.S. households purchase these frozen delights. Here are a few more cool facts: America leads the world in ice cream consumption, averaging 48 pints per person, per year and over 1 billion popsicles. This country's favorite ice cream flavors are vanilla, chocolate, butter pecan, strawberry and Neapolitan; the most popular popsicles are cherry, orange and grape. The experts at the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association (NFRA) say you should make the ice cream aisle your last stop, keep your frozen purchases together in the cart and pack them in an additional paper bag for the ride home. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration defines ice cream as a mixture of dairy products containing at least 10 percent milk fat. "Reduced fat" ice cream has at least 25 percent less total fat than ice cream. "Light" ice cream has at least 50 percent less total fat or 33 percent fewer calories than ice cream. "Low-fat" ice cream has no more than three grams of total fat per 1/2 cup serving, while "nonfat" ice cream contains less than 0.5 grams of total fat per serving. No matter which you prefer, this dessert should delight: 1 12 8 12 1 12 6 6 Mint Ice Cream Brownie Delight pkg. fudge brownie mix, family size gallon mint chocolate chip ice cream oz. carton whipped topping maraschino cherries cup whipping cream cup light corn syrup oz. semisweet chocolate chips oz. bittersweet or dark chocolate chips

Prepare, bake and cool brownies according to package directions. Cut into 12 servings. For fudge sauce, bring whipping cream and corn syrup to simmer in medium saucepan. Remove from heat; add chocolate chips; stir until smooth. To serve, start with ice cream in bowl, top with brownie, a smaller scoop of ice cream and drizzle with warm fudge sauce. Add a dollop of whipped topping and garnish with a cherry. Serves 12. You can find additional recipes and tips and a chance to win a weekly coupon giveaway at www.EasyHomeMeals.com and EasyHomeMeals on Facebook. You'll find special deals on ice cream and novelties at the grocery store during the annual NFRA June/July Summer Favorites promotion. Double the delight of family and friends when you serve this delicious brownie and ice cream dessert. *** None are so empty as those who are full of themselves. Benjamin Whichcote *** Id rather sit down and write a letter than call someone up. I hate the telephone. Henry Miller *** A scholar who loves comfort is not fit to be called a scholar. Confucius *** The compass plant is so-called because its leaves tend to line up in a north-south direction. Know Your Water Footprint (NAPSA)-Most people have heard of their carbon footprint but have you heard of your water footprint? On one hand, the United States has an abundance of water, al_most 8 percent of the world's freshwater resources, but only 4.5 percent of the world's population. On the other hand, the average American's water footprint, the total amount of water directly and indirectly used, is nearly twice the world's average. You can calculate your water footprint at www.waterfootprint.org. Water Conservation Tips Take a short showr instead of a bath. A five- to 10-minute shower uses less water than a full bathtub. Install a hot water circulator in the bathroom under the sink and it can save an average family of four more than 12,000 gallons of water a year by eliminating the need to wait for the water to get hot. Shower during the warmer part of the day and use cooler water. Showering during the heat of the day is a great way to reduce your hot water consumption. Install a more efficient shower fixture: Efficient fixtures maintain high pressure while lowering the amount of water used. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Use a drip irrigation system instead of a hose or sprinkler to water your garden. Direct the water drain line from your air conditioner to a flower bed, tree base or onto your lawn. Set up a rain barrel under a rain gutter outside your house. You can catch hundreds of gallons to use for watering the lawn, washing the car, etc. For more information on water conservation and energy-saving products and tips, go to: www.itth2opros.com www.epa.gov/watersense www.bellgossett.com

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese Panini Dont reserve the grill just for dinner. Assemble these delicious appetizer paninis and make them hot and crunchy on the grill. 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 (1 pound each) sweet onions, thinly sliced Salt and pepper 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves 8 (1/2-inch thick) center slices country-style bread 4 ounces soft fresh goat cheese 1. In nonstick 12-inch skillet, heat oil on medium one minute. Stir in onions, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper; cover and cook 15 minutes or until very soft, stirring occasionally. Uncover and cook 15 to 25 minutes longer or until onions are golden brown, stirring frequently. Stir in thyme; remove pan from heat. 2. Prepare outdoor grill for direct grilling on medium. 3. Meanwhile, assemble panini: Place 4 slices bread on work surface. Spread one-fourth of goat cheese on each slice and top with one-fourth of onion mixture. Top with remaining bread slices. 4. Place 2 panini on hot grill grate. Place heavy skillet (preferably cast iron) on top of panini, press down, and cook 7 to 8 minutes or until bread is toasted and browned on both sides, turning over once. Repeat with remaining two panini. Cut in halves or quarters to serve. Makes 8 MAKING DRY MIXES Instead of buying mixes for things like banana bread, I make my own. When I have some time and am making a batch of quick bread, I line up several zipper bags and put the dry ingredients in them as I put them in the bowl. I then label them and store them in my pantry. When I want to bake again, I just have to grab a mix and half the work is done! This saves me money and time, and it is much healthier for my family. Tammy D. in Germantown, WI

REJUVENATED LAMP SHADES Regarding old lamp shades. I bought five lace placemats at a discount store. They fit perfectly on the shades that I had. I pinned them to the top of the shades with pearl-headed pins and let the scalloped edge hang a bit below the bottom edge of the shade. They look very expensive. My neighbor thought I had my lamp shades custom made. Dave K.

TIPS FOR A MEMORABLE MEMORIAL DAY BARBECUE To many Americans, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Though summer does not actually begin until later in June, Memorial Day weekend has become synonymous with backyard barbecues and trips to the beach. Backyard barbecues, in particular, have become a staple of Memorial Day weekend and the focus of many peoples festivities. This year, consider the following tips to make your Memorial Day barbecue safe and memorable. * Place the grill in a safe spot. Before any guests arrive or any fires are lit, make sure the grill is safely located on flat ground. Ideally, the grill should not be on the grass and should be away from trees or shrubs and any other flammable materials. If you need lighter fluid to start a fire, promptly put the fluid back in storage, away from the grill, once the fire has been lit. * Clean the grill. Memorial Day marks the opening of grilling season for many grillmasters. Make sure the grill has been thoroughly cleaned and that there are no leftover ashes from last season clogging the vents. Even if you thoroughly cleaned the grill at the end of last season, give it a once-over with a soapy sponge at the start of the season to clean any cobwebs, or dirt and grime that might have accumulated over the winter. * Stock up on charcoal. Falling short in the charcoal department is a backyard barbecue faux pas that can bring the festivities to a halt. Because the weather in late May can sometimes be unpredictable, make sure you have extra charcoal on hand should strong winds or colder temperatures make it difficult to build a strong fire. * Spice things up. Why not use this years Memorial Day barbecue to add a little extra flavor to traditional barbecue fare? Soak some dried herbs like rosemary, bay leaves or oregano in water and add them to the grill. These flavorful herbs will make the food taste better, and the grill will likely emit a more pleasant fragrance as well. * Prepare foods for guests with varying palates. Vegetarians and vegans love a good backyard barbecue just as much as their carnivorous friends and family members. Cook some vegetable kabobs and prepare some salads for guests who dont eat meat. Consider purchasing a smaller grill for veggies only, as vegetarians and vegans might not prefer to eat kabobs grilled on the same grill as meat. * Keep the forks in the utensil drawer. Never use a fork to do a spatulas job. Poking foods on the grill with a fork allows the juices that make grilled foods so delicious to escape, resulting in drier fare thats not nearly as flavorful. Use a spatula or tongs to flip foods, including burgers, steaks, chicken, and even hot dogs. * Make sure foods have completely defrosted before placing them on the grill. When cold meat is placed on the grill, it reduces the grills temperature and prevents juices from getting seared in the food. So make sure all foods have been defrosted to ensure your foods are flavorful and the grill stays hot. This year, welcome the unofficial start of summer with a successful Memorial Day barbecue in the backyard with family, friends and great food.

I can feel a sharp sting when bitten. It goes away and then returns as a large swelling with incessant itching. What can I do to prevent this reaction? Others dont react this bad. I also use DEET to deter these diabolical pests. Should I wash it off as soon as I get indoors? -- C.R. ANSWERS: No-see-ums got that name because theyre barely visible, only 1/16th of an inch. Dawn and dusk are their busiest hours. Avoidance is the best protection. The red welt you describe arises about 12 or more hours after the bite and can be as large as an inch in diameter. It does itch. DEET is the best repellent, but its not a 100 percent barrier for all users. Have you tried a higher concentration? Are you following label directions regarding when to reapply it? When you get back home, wash treated skin with soap and water. Also, you can spray your clothes with permethrin. It will give you additional protection. Wear long slacks tucked into your socks and long-sleeved tops. As for the itch, antihistamines are suggested. I admit they dont work for everyone.

A SPORTING VIEW By Mark Vasto The Todd Father Im trying to relax before they get here, looking over the menu, looking for a quick sip before they do, but cant. Why? Tommy the bartender is over in the corner talking to server Jessica. Why? Because Jessica is, like, soooooooo mad that Todd just took another one of her tables! And the other server, Tim? He has worked here for soooooooo long and totally could have told you that Todd was going to do that. Oh, and yes ... hes told the owners many times before, but they dont care! Re-enter Tommy -who at one time had a very noble charge to fill as a bartender -seconds after my in-laws and wife arrive. The only thing Ive gotten so far is a packet of stale oyster crackers and a real chip on my shoulder for this guy Todd. Sometimes, all I want is an ice-cold martini and a story off the hot stove. It means more when youre on deadline and sitting at a table nursing a soda with your inlaws. These are the ones who actually planned for their retirement, take time out from their golf game to watch your kid, and will probably pick up this tab ... all in the hopes you wont end up living in their basement. But tonight, Im sitting on a scoop, so Im edgy. And so, to my detriment, decide to hash out my misgivings on breaking the story via text after dinner with a former sportswriter who now works as a sellout. Is this lame, or is it my straw stirs the drink moment? Youve been [that teams] [pliant submissive] since I met you, she says, with warmth and encouragement. Do some original investigation at least. A furious text stream follows. I am compared to terrible people and hypocrites ... disgraced sitcom sidekicks like Boner, Chachi Arcola and the Great Gizzoo. Real below-the-belt stuff. I

Yeah, whatever Kay...let me know when Im conversing with a girl. The moment I hit send I was toast. I texted back: The next send button I see is going to get wacked. Never let anybody know what youre thinking. Moments later, as I was inspecting fruit at a street-side stand, two send buttons pulled up and shot me in the back five times while that guy from Deer Hunter cried on the curb. ***

Earthworms are often known to be workhorses in the garden, helping to aerate and fertilize the soil while filling it with nutrients. Earthworms recycle materials like dead leaves, decaying animals and feces so new plant seedlings can grow and have the process begin anew. Worms have been around for 120 million years -- one of the few species of insects that have stood the test of time. In just one acre of soil, there may be a million or more earthworms turning over the soil and chewing on organic matter. Without earthworms, most plants would not thrive. Earthworms have mucous covering their bodies in order to stay moist. This helps them to breathe through their skin. You may have noticed that after it rains worms appear on sidewalks and outside of their underground burrows. This is not because they are drowning underground, but because the environment is moist after it rains, making it more conducive for worms to breathe and move around to find mates. Normally the dry conditions above ground make them dry out and die. Earthworms can be remarkable creatures to watch. This fast includes abstaining from food, drink and sexual relations. Regarded as a method of selfpurification, Ramadan, to Muslims, symbolizes cutting oneself off from worldly comforts, connecting all Muslims to the less fortunate who cannot enjoy those comforts. Ramadan is also meant to help Muslims foster their own spiritual growth. The elderly, the sick, women who are pregnant or nursing, and people traveling are permitted to break the fast, though the days must be made up later in the year. For those who cannot make up the days later in the year, such as the sick and the elderly, they must feed a needy person for every day they broke the fast. Children are not required to observe the fast until they reach puberty. However, many children begin fasting before then.

Thats because the first of July marks the day the British colonies in North America joined with a province of the British Empire to form the nation of Canada. Officially recognized as its own country on July 1, 1867, Canada celebrates Canada Day in ways that are very similar to how their neighbor to the south celebrates its own independence on July 4. Like their fellow North Americans in the United States, who celebrate their independence from Great Britain annually on July 4, Canadians typically prefer to celebrate Canada Day with a backyard barbecue attended by family and friends. Parades, carnivals and festivals are popular as well. But the two countries Independence Days arent entirely similar. In fact, unlike in the United States, the British Parliament maintained limited political control over the Canadians for quite some time after the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada became the country known today as Canada. That political control gradually subsided over the years, until its last vestiges were surrendered in 1982. That year was also the year the holiday was officially renamed Canada Day. Until then, it had been known as Dominion Day. Canada Day is also celebrated outside Canadas borders. Annual celebrations are held at Trafalgar Square in London, and the city of Detroit in Michigan has joined Windsor, Ontario, for more than 50 years in a joint celebration of both the United States and Canadas independence in an event known as the International Freedom Festival. A joint celebration also occurs in the cities of Fort Erie, Ontario, and Buffalo, New York.

TOP 5 TIPS FOR BOATING SAFETY (NAPS)-Before taking to the waterways, plot a course to safety. GEICO Insurance Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard recommend the following: 1. Always wear a life jacket-The U.S. Coast Guard requires that all recreational boats must carry one Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person aboard. Life jackets should be tested yearly and must be the appropriate size for the intended user. 2. Check the weather forecast-A calm, sunny day can quickly turn into a deadly storm. Check the weather forecast before venturing out. Also, keep a radio on board to receive weather up_dates and advisories. 3. Take a boater safety course-Learn the proper regulations and safety precautions. Most states require operators to pass boater safety requirements and display their safety certificate. 4. Dont drink and boat- According to the U.S. Coast Guard, boating while intoxicated (BWI) is a leading cause of fatal boating accidents. Alcohol affects judgment and vision, increasing the likelihood of an accident. Its illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol. 5. Preventative boat maintenance-Regularly checking your equipment for safety ensures that it will perform better, reduce depreciation and save on costly repairs.

This photo was found in our Moneysaver files. Jane Bell wrote to us about this photograph. My husband and I graduated in 1967 from O-E High School with the fellow. The harvester of vegetables name is Doug Stannard and he worked at Faulkners Farms while we were in high school. Weve also had this response... Becky Jacques notified us that the young man pictured holding broccoli and cauliflower is Les McKay of Bolivar, N.Y. (around 1955). He worked for Percy Faulkners Oswayo Valley Farms in the Ceres area. Percy hired many young people to help harvest crops. He brought seeds from the old country and was known for his splendid produce - the huge heads of cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, green and yellow beans, German sweet rutabagas, potatoes, corn, squash and wonderful Sparkle strawberries!
