BRIEF: To create a limited edition set of prints, using alternative print methods to document the worlds natural disasters. Using General Sherman, the giant redwood, to create an identity that would work as an information graphic to inform the public as to the events that happened in the past. RELATION TO DESIGN PRACTICE: This brief has given me the opportunity to work with info graphics, which I had never done previously. I also wanted to explore the idea of using alternative print methods and natural substrates as much as possible to develop and deliver this brief.

I designed an article which would be published in national Geographic, as everything within this brief is based around natural events and natural material. This would work to inform people, not only about purchasing the limited edition prints but also about the concept itself.

Using General Sherman as the basis of the concept, due to the fact it has existed through all the worst natural disasters. I distilled the tree down to its natural pattern of tree rings. I then developed the rings to highlight the key natural disasters in a chronological way. This meant that I could systematically map the natural events that have happened. With regards to the font, I chose courier due to the balance it created against the pattern, it also gave an aesthetic that relates to information. The aim of the boards was to be simple and clean, creating a harmony between both the information and imagery.

Within the set of limited edition prints, there are four key boards with the selected main natural disasters that have happened. These then accompany the other 8 boards which have the categorised and distilled information displayed on them. Using the engraving system I developed, I was able to highlight and create a visual hierarchy to help showcase the information.

In order for the boards to be clear and to highlight the chronological order of the boards and set, I designed a concertina fold publication, printed double sided to help highlight the order of the events. The concertina fold allows interaction, and help showcase the information in a clear way. The publications aim is to highlight the prints that do not have nor need information.

With regards to the packaging for the boards, I wanted it to resonate the idea of natural materials. I designed a case, made from pig suede and with the help from a collaboration with a fashion student, commissioned a case to hold all the prints. The idea was to not only use natural materials, but make the unwrapping an experience and increase the tactility and interaction.
