The freedom to grow in godliness - to naturally express Christs character through your own personality - is in large part dependent on a deliberate cultivation of the spiritual disciplines. Far from being legalistic, restrictive, or binding, as they are often perceived, the spiritual disciplines are actually the means to unparalleled spiritual liberty. Kidz Summer Quest is coming June 11-15 for all children entering 1st - 4th grades. Volunteers are needed! We also need shoe boxes, canopy tents, large baskets, silk plants, striped or multicolored fabric, burlap, and large clay pots. Cookies are also needed; please donate either chocolate or vanilla sandwich cookies or chocolate chip cookies. Please call 596-8600 x350 for more information about volunteering or donating items.

Pursuing Discipline
It is wonderful to be back in the pulpit. Like most of you who travel abroad, I always feel like kissing American soil when I return. Thank you for your persistent prayers while I was in Romania and for your willingness to allow me to minister to the larger Kingdom of Christ. I rarely go overseas, but I always hope to return as a better preacher and with a bigger heart for the world. I am excited about our new summer study for Wednesday evening. Our adults will gather in the Worship Center around tables for times of worship, teaching, discussing, fellowshipping, and praying, just as we have done in the past. We will not be viewing a video series, but will hear different individuals in our church teach the principles taught in Dr. Don Whitneys book, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. I urge you to get a copy of this outstanding book from our Bookstore. It has been the basis for the discipleship approach over the last year at First Baptist Academy. Don is a personal friend of mine and professor at Southern Seminary. As a godly communicator, he has developed the first ever Masters and Ph.D study program in Biblical Spirituality. We are urged, Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness (1 Timothy 4:7). Discipline through divine grace is not legalism. It is not an end, but a means to the end of knowing Christ and making Him known. Just as the path up a rugged mountain is not the end, but rather the way to get a great view; so discipline helps us to grow in the Lord as His pathway. We will be discussing how discipline helps us to be more like Christ and then to develop skills concerning Bible intake, prayer, worship, witnessing, serving, stewardship, fasting, silence, and journaling. Dont be overwhelmed by these subjects. We tend to learn a number of them at the same time, such as when you are having a quiet time or being involved in your church. However, there are riches to discover. We remember the words of Charles Spurgeon, the great British Baptist preacher: I must take care above all that I cultivate communion with Christ. Tom Landry, coach of the Dallas Cowboys, said: The job of a football coach is to make men do what they dont want to do in order to achieve what they have always wanted to be. Coaching begins June 6 at 6:30 p.m. I know that you want to be like Christ, though you may not relish discipline. Lets learn to win! The end is worth the means.

Adults
New Bible Study Begins Saturday, June 2 This new study, Dare to be a Daniel, will be taught by Al Micieli, Sr. at 5:00 p.m. in Room DC107. Daniel stands in Gods Word as the man who dared to keep a clean heart and the man, therefore, whom God chose as a channel for His message to the Gentiles. Daniels task was to proclaim Gods truth in the actual government of Babylon. Today, we live in a country that is looking more and more like the heathen nation of Babylon. Through the study of Daniel, we can learn how God wants us to respond to our heathen nation, as well as give us a look to the future.

They are having training camp here at First Baptist Academy June 8-14. The players will be gone most of the day, but will need some meals and sleeping arrangements. The team will then fly to San Juan on June 14th to play against club teams and conduct clinics. If you are interested in serving in this way, please call Scott Stewart at 269-7473 or sstewart@fbalions.org.

Volunteers greatly needed are dentists and hygienists/dental assistants that could volunteer for a four hour shift. They also need volunteers to assist patients and provide spiritual support. If you could provide a lunch or snack for the daily volunteers that would also be needed. Or perhaps you could donate goodies for the care kit that each patient will receive. If you can help in any capacity, please call Donna Codman at 777-5051 or 732-0033.
