during the school year, a group of

th
grade students from Celina
West Elementary met with their
High School Bigs from area high
schools. This group of Bigs and
Littles is part of the Big Brothers
Big Sisters Buddies program. The
Buddies program just concluded its
activities for this school year.
During their time together the
groups would work on homework,
have a snack, play games, and
do other activities. This year
they focused on multicultural
appreciation, safety, and being
healthy. They also had several
guest speakers come in throughout
the year.
The leader of this group was
Nancy Eberle. She said that she will
always remember the excitement of
the Littles and the sparkle in their
eyes when the Bigs would walk
in. Some of the Bigs had favorite
memories, too. One said this gave
her the chance to be a part of a
childs life that needed her. Others
said that they enjoyed watching
the Littles grow and having fun
with the Littles. The Littles were
also asked about their experience.
One mentioned that having her Big
was the greatest thing that has ever
happened to her. Others mentioned
that they liked how helpful their
Bigs were and having fun with their
Bigs.

Memorial Day brings back
memories of my time spent at the
Harbor Point 4-H Camp, east of
Celina, where I served as the County
4-H Program Assistant. To this
day campers and staff sleep in the
very buildings that housed the 70
American soldiers the summer of
1944. American GIs guarded the 300
German prisoners of war once they
arrived by train from New Orleans,
La.
The prisoners resided in tents
placed in rows in the middle of the
camp and were surrounded by the
cabins. They took their meals in
the dinning hall where the same
silverware and other items 4-Hers
used were engraved with US army.
Cots, green wool blankets and other
left over supplies were utilized by
campers in the 70s and 80s
My late Uncle Charlie Dock,
a Coldwater native and long time
Englewood resident, served as a
medic at the camp along with a
German medic named Hans. The
two became friends and corresponded
for a few years. He said the German
prisoners were just as docile as
lambs. They were nice guys and we
had good rapport with those people.
They were young men around 17-
18 years of age and although they
preferred to be in Germany, they
accepted their time in Mercer County.
Uncle Charlie commented that there
was no need for high fences and
barbed wire as the POWs knew they
were well cared for and had no desire
to escape.
The plan was for the soldiers to
work in the agricultural field, as the
area was short on workers because
our young men were serving over
seas in the war. A Daily Standard
article reported on July 8, 1944:
Officials of Crampton Canneries
Inc. of Celina and Beckman and
Gast of St. Henry said that should the
prisoners be brought here, they would
use them. They were paid 80 cents
per day and received 10 cents per day
when they were not working. Locals
remembered watching the POWs
being transported on the beds of
Army trucks to their work sites. They
were described as good looking
young men. The POWs returned
to Germany in October of 1944. The
camp was returned to the 4-Hers and
is still being used as a 4-H Camp for
local youth each June.
Charlie Dock admitted that his
was an easy job as a medic and he was
able to hitchhike home to Coldwater
to spend the night and return the next
morning via the same routine. This is
almost impossible to imagine these
days. He never made a big deal out of
this time at the POW camp but I feel
it is important to remember and thank
our members of the armed forces each
Memorial Day. Especially as our
country is at war and we have many
local young men and women serving
for our freedom. Thank you.

Ten Behavior Myths in Dogs
This is the second in a series on behavior problems. It is always best to consult your
veterinarian frst when an aggressive or worrisome behavior is being exhibited by your pet.

I want a medication to treat my dogs behavior problems.
Medications are alone not the answer to a pets behavior problems. Medications can
play an important role in the treatment of a behavior problem but only if used as a part of
a complete treatment plan. Medications do not solve the problem completely. Behavior
modifcation and environmental modifcation are necessary to achieve long-term lasting
improvements. Some medications have been shown to increase the speed of which these
modifcations take effect, but are only considered another useful tool in treating the behavior
problem, not the remedy.

Aggressive dogs are only acting dominant.
Some dogs may truly exhibit dominance aggression; these instances are more popular
with the social media and are much rarer than they want you to believe. Dominance theories
are outdated, and they result in confrontational styles of training. The styles of training are
based on the mistaken belief that owners have to physically dominate their dogs. This type of
training is dangerous and usually ineffective. It has resulted in damage to the human-animal
bond more than success. Dogs with aggression problems are usually anxious or afraid. They
usually respond well to reward based training under the supervision of a qualifed person.

My pet gets angry with me and knows what he did wrong.
Dogs do not eliminate on the foor or destroy things out of spite. The likely cause is
anxiety or lack of exercise or stimulation. Many dogs show submissive behavior when their
owners come home. Tucking the tail, lowering the ears, avoiding eye contact, and slinking
away are not signs your pet is saying they are sorry. They mean that the dog has learned
that you are angry and associates your return home with the presence of feces, garbage, or
destroyed items on the foor. The dog is not angry but afraid. That is because in the past
when you arrived home to these things, you yelled at or hit. Even if you did not do these
things, the angry body language you exhibit is clear to the dog. The dog still learns to feel
fear when people arrive. When you punish your pet in these circumstances, it does not teach
your pet anything. The dog is incapable of associating any punishment with the behavior he
performed minutes or hours before.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

Now that another school year is drawing to a close, your young children are a step closer to the day when
theyll be heading off to college. Of course, as youre probably aware, higher education doesnt come cheap
and the costs seem to continuously climb. You can help your children or even your grandchildren meet
these expenses by investing in a 529 plan. And this college savings vehicle offers estate-planning benefts.
As a college funding vehicle, a 529 plan offers some signifcant benefts. When you contribute to a 529
plan, your earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualifed higher education expenses. (Keep
in mind, though, that 529 plan distributions not used for qualifed expenses may be subject to federal and state
income tax and a 10% IRS penalty.) Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your
state taxes. However, 529 plans vary, so be sure to check with your tax advisor. And the lifetime contribution
limits for 529 plans are quite generous; while these limits vary by state, many plans allow contributions well in
excess of $200,000. Plus, a 529 plan is fexible: If the child, grandchild or other benefciary decides against
college, you can transfer the unused funds to someone else, tax and penalty free.
Now, lets turn to a 529 plans estate-planning benefts. If you think that you may need to reduce the size
of your taxable estate, and you also want to create a legacy you may be able to enjoy during your lifetime, you
may fnd that the 529 plan offers a solution for you. When you establish and contribute to a 529 plan, the assets
leave your estate but they dont leave your control. If your named benefciary decides against college and
you dont have another family member to whom you can transfer the account or if you simply change your
mind about funding the 529 plan you can get your money back at any time, although, as mentioned above,
youll have to pay taxes, and possibly a 10% IRS penalty, on the earnings.
Your contributions to a 529 plan also qualify for the $13,000 annual gift tax exclusion, so you can give large
amounts each year without incurring the gift tax.
In the investment world, you can fnd many vehicles that can help you make progress toward one goal.
But its far less common to fnd something that may give you a boost toward two. And when the two goals
are helping a child or grandchild go to college and lowering the value of your taxable estate while still
maintaining control of your assets youve got an investment worth considering. So consult with your tax and
fnancial advisors to determine if a 529 plan is right for you. And if it is, think about taking action soon, because
the more years you can contribute to a 529 plan, the better the outlook for both your future student and your
estate plans

Another school year is about
finished and soon there will
be many more people looking
for work. Lets hope they find a
decent job with decent pay. It
seems to be getting harder and
harder to find work just out of
high school. And with the high
cost of college today making
it harder to get into college
that will also add to the work
force looking for work. The
recent increase in tuition is pre-
venting many kids from even
considering going to college. In
a presidential year one would
think the candidates would
be looking into lack of jobs
available for the graduates of
this school year. Unemployment
rates are still too high and no
one seems interested in talking
much about it. I am not sure any
President, be he Democrat or
republican, is going to solve the
unemployment problems that we
have today. I feel as though there
are just too many jobs leaving
the U.S. to foreign countries. I
only wish I had the knowledge
to solve this problem but I dont.
The Presidential candidate that
can come up with the ways to
stop this would surely be elected
hands down.
We could really use some
rain. I dont mean three or four
inches in a couple hours. Just a
nice easy rain for about a day
and a half and give it time to
soak in the ground. Dont need
any gully washers! The corn is
looking good and it just needs
rain and some warm weather. I
guess we just have to take what
the good Lord gives us and be
thankful for it.
Questions of the week; what
is happening to Grand Lake? It
is brown on the surface now and
no one seems to know what is
happening. How did the Alum
treatments go? Been thinking
about doing some crappie fishing
but I am not sure if I really want
to. Its a really hard decision to
make. I will have to give it some
serious thought and see what is
best. you all be good out there
and stay safe. Be sure and lock
your doors when you are out of
the house.

as Outstanding Senior Citizen of

was completed on May 10 and

few weeks.

The village of St. Henry has
been gearing up for its 150th
birthday party, to be held from July
4-12. Events will include a parade
on July 5, the burying of a time
capsule, an old-time barn dance,
and a concert by a German band.

graduate 69 seniors this Sunday
afternoon. Co-valedicorians

On May 3rd and 4th the Parkway FFA
chapter went to the State FFA convention.
At the convention, one member from the
Parkway FFA chapter, made it to the finals
in the proficiency award area of Specialty
Crop Production.
Kylie Snyder, a junior, placed 4th in
the state of Ohio in her SAE. SAE stands
for Supervised Agriculture Event. The fi-
nals began early Thursday morning with
an intense interview, by a panel consisting
of three judges. She had to keep record of
all her mum sales and how much money
she made through her business. She also
had to make a display to set up at conven-
tion, so that members and guest could
see all the hard work she has put into her
SAE.
Kylie earned this award by raising and
selling mums. Throughout the summer
she plants, waters, pulls weeds, and fertil-
izes mums, that are to be sold during the
fall. In total, she has raise and sold around
850 mums. She is going to continue her
work this summer with a goal of selling
500 mums. They come in a variety of col-
ors as well as a variety of pot sizes.
The prices depend on the size of pot.

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could.Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated

Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found

If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.

Baker Woods Community Days will
take place on Saturday, May 26, 2012,
which is located on St. Anthony road
between Burkettsville St. Henry road
and State route 118. (A short drive
north of Coldwater). Come out and
enjoy Mercer Countys only State owned
Nature Preserve and both kids and family
are welcome. It is a 1.25 mile walking
trail through a forty-seven acre maple-
oak forest. The woods is open to the
public from sunrise to sunset. Parking is
available at entrance of the trail. A short
presentation about the woods will be
held at 10:00 a.m. at the trail entrance.
Mosquito repellent is recommended when
walking on the trail. Please like Baker

The Museums in Mercer and
Auglaize Counties encourage young
people to visit their Museums and to
learn how the people here in Western
Ohio lived. Our past citizens have
worked to develop communities,
businesses, schools, churches, service
organizations, and to provide good
homes to each new generation. When
I see the young people visit the Mercer
County Historical Museum, and see
how interested they are in the exhibits
and what their great grandparents did,
I have my faith renewed in mankind.
We can be proud of the families in our
area and the fine young people they are
raising.
Stephen Ambrose recognized
the importance to passing on our
knowledge of the past, to the youth
today, when he wrote, The past is a
source of knowledge, and the future
is a source of hope. Love of the past
implies a faith in the future.
Most families value our local
Museums. Most families respect the
contribution that the Museums make
to affirm the importance of values in
our lives, and as well as passing that
pride in the past to future generations.
A Museum is not an old building with
a bunch of old stuff. A Museum
is one facet of the multitude of
responsibilities that local historical
societies share in preserving our
history and educating the public about
that history.
Friday, April 7, the Celina High
School Students volunteered for the
Community Service Day at the Mercer
County Historical Museum, The riley
Home. The Students put a shine on
the glassware, arranged the Quilt and
Coverlet Exhibit, put finishing touches
on displays, dusted the Bazooka, set up
the sad irons, worked with the wooden
utensils, and helped at the Museum
as volunteers. They expressed their
enjoyment of working with the
old exhibits at the Mercer County
Historical Museum.
Tuesday, May 1, the Celina M.
H. Class of the Intermediate Class
toured the Museum. The girls tried
on the vintage hats and the boys wore
the bowler hats. They were enjoying
themselves so much by modeling those
old hats that I took their photographs!
We should pass on our heritage to
the younger generation. Families do
not always get together as they did,
before the era of television and easy
travel to other places. Grandparents,
uncles, aunts and cousins are not
passing on the family stories to the
younger members of their families.
There is a loss of that extended family
network of support for the young
people.

Hartings speaks at
Coldwater Kiwanis
Jack Hartings, Presi-
dent of Peoples Bank
Company, spoke to the
Coldwater Kiwanis Club
on March 24, 2009, about
Current Banking Issues.
Jack recently attended the
Independent Community
Bankers Convention in Phoenix, AZ, where
much information was shared back and forth
between bank officials and government represen-
tatives.
Jack explained the concept of reverse
mortgages. Reverse mortgages are a fairly new
product offered by financial institutions that
allow a person to get cash out of his/her home
while continuing to live in the home. The cash
amount the person receives is based on actuarial
tables and the value of the home. Various fees
are attached and the person must continue to pay
for upkeep and maintenance. Jack said for some
people this might be a good option, but for others
it would not be.
The financial mess that currently exists is a
result of the home mortgage industry overstretch-
ing its lending practices. The toxic assets now
held by many large banks are those securities
(bundled mortgages) on properties whose value
has fallen below the amount of the mortgage.

St. Rochus Auxiliary #288 Knights of St. John
met on April 27. The evening began with 6 p.m.
social hour with a chicken dinner served at 6:30
p.m. After dinner entertainment was provided by
the Swinging Seniors from the Auglaize Council on
Aging. They had an enjoyable program of line
dancing and some amusing jokes. The May crown-
ing was held with Melissa Wynk having the honor
of crowning the Blessed Mother. The rosary was
recited for Mary Schwieterman, all members in
hospitals and nursing homes, favorable weather for
Spring planting. The meeting opened with Wilma
Beyke replacing Mary Gagel as Sentinel and Rita
Bertke replacing Kathy Homan as Messenger. A
thank you note was read from Mary Link. She also
reported that 1120 rosaries were made and mailed
out in April. We received an invitation to again
participate in the Peace Pilgrimage to be held at the
Maria Stein Convent on May 21 and 22. The
closing ceremony is at 7:30 p.m. on May 22. The
Uniform Rank is to assemble at 7:15 p.m. Wilma
Beyke gave a report on the recent district meeting
held in Fort Loramie. Donna Stachler has the
Countryfest schedules ready. Please trade with
someone or get a sub if your time does not work.
All hands are needed for this event. Extra brownie
and angel food cake mixes are available if anyone
would like to bake some extra cakes. Aluminum
pans are also available for $.50. They will be
available at the May meeting. The president
thanked everyone who worked at the April chicken
fry. Group 2 will work on May 23. Lunch commit-
tee for the May 18 meeting is: Martha Albers,
Rosemary Moeller, Esther Kuess, and Sandy Bruns.
Rita M. Bertke, Wilma Beyke, Ann Everman,
Margie Keller, and Martha Thieman won door
prizes. The flowers used as decorations for the
tables were than given as door prizes.
V.F.W. Post 5135
V.F.W. 5135 met at Post home on April 27,
with Mary Jo Delzeith presiding. Ruth Delzeith
led the prayer and pledge. Secretarys report read
and approved. Treasurers report given and
approved. A $20 donation was given to Cancer
Fund in memory of Elvina Osterfeld. An invita-
tion to the 25th Annual Celebration of the Center
for Neurological Development was sent to thank
all of you for the Auxiliary donation. President
May Jo Delzeith and Senior Vice Ruth Delzeith
will do the honors of attending. District 2 news-
letter was read reminding all members to remem-
ber its time to vote. Also send the eight monthly
reports.
The draping of the charter was performed for
Alma Osterholt. Motion made to make a dona-
tion to Hospitalized Veterans. First Della
Kanney, second Mary Giere. Cookies for blood-
mobile drop off at Florence Sniders house be-
tween 10 a.m. and noon. Alvera Schmitz was
voted in for new president. New officers will be
installed in our May meeting. Patriotic Instructor
Alvera Schmitz read the consequences of
foefeiting the Auxiliary charter.
Kiwanis News
A recent meeting of the Coldwater Kiwanis was in the
popular dinner with a view format. Members met at the
proposed site for the planned Agricultural and Industrial
Heritage Center (AIHC) in the Sycamore Group complex
that formerly housed offices for the New Idea Company.
Dinner was prepared using the newly refurbished K-Burger
grill and trailer.
Floyd Winner, President of the Board of Directors of
the AIHC, gave those in attendance a history of the agri-
culture and industrial innovation in the area and the rea-
sons this heritage should be preserved and celebrated.
He also introduced other members of the newly formed
board, and described the progress made to date in plan-
ning for the opening of the Center. He noted that the AIHC
concept would not be that of a static museum of objects.
The board desires to provide changing exhibits and inter-
active displays that focus on the well-designed, innova-
tive, high quality products produced in this area and illus-
trate the work ethic and cooperation between employer
and employee that made these products recognized
around the world. In response to questions, Floyd said
funds to develop the Center will be raised through dona-
tions, memberships and grants. He said he hoped that the
Center might be open later this year, but that some red
tape type hurdles must still be crossed. After his presen-
tation, Floyd invited everyone to tour the building.

Board of Education
Report for May 11
The Marion Local Board of Education held
its regular meeting on May 11 at 7:30p.m., in the
BOE conference room. Minutes of the regular
meeting on April 13 were approved.
Mrs. Dot Garman, Marion Local Technology
Coordinator, submitted her technology report.
Mr. Mike Pohlman, Marion Local High School
Principal, submitted the following report: Con-
gratulations to Tara Hartings for being selected as
the Franklin B. Walter award recipient for Marion
Local. Prom went very well. Prom Queen was
Kensey Schwieterman and Prom King was Dean
Wenning. Miss Karen Post, Marion Local K-8
Principal, submitted the following report: Field
Day went very well. The Board recommended
and approved the financial reports for the month
of April as presented by Mr. Paul Gagel, Marion
Local Treasurer. Marion Local Superintendent,
Mr. Carl Metzger, reviewed enrollment projec-
tions for the 2009-10 school year. Current figures
show the district will have 915 students for the
year, down ten from the previous year. With
recommendation from the Superintendent, the
Board approved the following personnel matters:
to approve contracts for 1/2 time Health/Phys Ed-
Laura Kaiser; full time route bus driver-Greg
Bruns; Stan Wilker as athletic director and ticket
manager; and an additional period for one semes-
ter of teaching for Keith Westrick; to approve the
resignations from Whitney Klosterman for Junior
High Cheerleading Advisor and Carla Otte as
Assistant Varsity Volleyball Coach; to approve
the hiring of Amanda Otte for Junior High
Cheerleading Advisor; and to approve the hiring
of summer employees. The Board moved to
adjourn the meeting at 8:23p.m.
Jack says most local banks do not engage in
careless lending. They are conservative in their
approach.
FDIC insurance covers up to $250,000 per
account. The amount was increased from
$100,000 per account last fall, though the current
regulation expires at the end of 2009,
Jack expects that the $250,000 limit will be
continued. He also said that if an individual
structures his/her accounts properly, the person
could be covered for much more than $250,000.
Local banks are healthy and safe. Jack says
the delinquency rate on mortgage payments
locally is only 2 or 3 percent, compared to 20
percent or more in other parts of the country. He
did note that the cost of FDIC insurance for all
banks is rising significantly due to the financial
mess even though the smaller local banks did not
contribute to the problem.

The Fort recovery American Legion and Veterans of
Foreign Wars will conduct their Memorial Day service on
Friday evening, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. The service will start at
the Wabash Bridge in North Wayne Street. After the ceremony
the veterans groups, high school band, scouts, 4-H clubs, and
anyone wanting to march will then parade to the Monument
Park for the rest of the program.
The guest speaker, Mort Ward, VFW State Second Vice
commander will give a short talk at Monument Park.
There will also be a Sunday morning Memorial Service at
10 a.m. on May 27 at First Church of Christ (Union City road,
Fort recovery).
Everyone is invited to the Friday evening and Sunday
morning services.

FOSTOrIA Celina claimed the district
girls track championship in Division II at
Fostoria while Coldwater finished fourth in
the same district.
The Lady Bulldogs recorded 155 points
to get past second place Liberty Bentons
134-1/2 points for the championship. Ottawa
Glandorf finished third with 74-1/2 points and
Coldwater took fourth, totaling 64 points for
the meet.
Bulldog freshman Bekah Carr won the
long jump title with a leap of 16-3 and took
the 400 dash championship in 1:00.32. Junior
teammate Gina Strable finished third in the
long jump as well. Lizz Carr also moved on
by taking second in the high jump with Strable
also taking second in the 200 dash. Hannah
Fleck captured the 800 run championship
with a time of 2:19.79. Lexi Mills moves on
in the 300 hurdles after finishing second.
Coldwater frosh Sarah Kanney also was
victorious by winning the 3200 run in 11:01.64
with sophomore Christina Seas taking second.
Celina freshman Jenna Coon also advanced
with a fourth place finish. Kanney also won
the 1600 run in 5:15.04 with fellow freshman
Lauren Seas also moving on after crossing the
line fourth. Celinas Hannah Fleck advanced
as well with a second place finish.
Celinas 1600 relay team of Lexi Mills,
Michaela Wenning, Bekah Carr and Hannah
Fleck won in 4:02.12 with the 400 relay squad
of Kendra Fennig, Strable, Alex Parker and
Katie Sutter taking second. Megan Imwalle,
Lexi Mills, Lizz Carr and Strable combined
for a title in the 800 relay with a time of
1:45.43.
Wenning, Emily Dorsten, Bekah Carr and
Fleck won the 3200 relay for the Bulldogs in
9:42.11 while the Cavalier quartet of Christina
Seas, Krerstin Siefring, Lauren Seas and Sarah
Kanney was second.
Mills and Lizz Carr each advanced in
the 100 hurdles with finishes of second and
fourth.
Other placers for the green and white
included Alex Parker (pole vault, fifth), Kacy
Stachler (pole vault, seventh), Katie Sutter
(shot put, sixth), Michaela Wenning (high
jump and 400 dash, fifth), Paige Dorsten
(discus, sixth), Katlin robinson (3200 run,
seventh), Emily Dorsten (800 run, sixth), Lizz
Carr (300 hurdles, sixth), Andrea Bell (1600
run, sixth),
Also scoring points for the black and
orange were Steph Honigford (pole vault,
eighth), rachel Schmitz (shot put, eighth and

The Cavalier 1600 relay team of

Local girls and Coldwater boys each
claimed second place finishes in
the Division III district track meet
at Spencerville High School last
week.
Minster won both championships
as the Wildcat boys totaled 147
points while the Lady Wildcats
accumulated 119 points.
In the girls meet, Marion Local
recorded 74 points followed by
Spencerville (67), Delphos Jefferson
(53) and Ottoville (46). Parkway
(31) took ninth with Fort recovery
and St. Henry tying for 12
th
at 27
points.
The Flyers Madison Chrisman
won the district championship with
a toss of 116-7 in the discus and
Parkways Bailey King won the
high jump with a leap of 5-2. Marion
Locals Allie Thobe captured the
long jump with a leap of 17-7-3/4,
breaking the stadium and district
records.
St. Henrys 3200 relay team of
Alison Langenkamp, Courtney
Kunk, Janel Vogel and Jenny
Osterholt took sixth while the Fort
recovery quartet of Sierra Pugh,
Jessica Vogel, Elle Sutter and Sam
Tobe were eighth. The lady Indian
800 relay team of Kylie Kahlig,
Caley Schoenherr, Hannah Kaup
and Pugh finished eighth as well.

finished second in the 100 dash and
Parkways Allison Gaerke was third
in the 1600 run as each advanced
to the regional meet. Kahlig also
advanced in the 400 dash for the lady
Indians with a fourth place finish. St.
Henrys Danielle Speck moves on
with a fourth place finish in the 300
hurdles while the lady Flyers Allie
Thobe was second in the 200 dash.
The Panthers King was third in the
long jump and Kahlig took third in
the shot put.
Two Flyers advanced in the pole
vault as Olivia Hemmelgarn and
Mindy Hartings finished second
and third with St. Henrys Sarah
Niekamp and Janel Vogel placing
seventh and eighth.
Fort recoverys Elle Sutter
crossed the line second in the 3200
run while St. Henrys Cathy Delzeith
was second in the discus. Speck also
took fifth in the high jump with
Parkways Lauren Buchanan and
Delzeith finishing sixth and eighth,
respectively, in the shot put.
Parkways Bailey King was
eighth in the 100 hurdles and Fort
recoverys Tobe took seventh in the
1600 run. Hess finished sixth in the
200 dash for the Flyers as well. St.
Henrys Courtney Kunk took sixth
in the 3200 run

combined to take third in the 400
relay for the lady Flyers while
Emilie Baker, Cassi Kuhn, Marissa
Hunter and King placing seventh for
Parkway. Baker also took fifth for
the lady Panthers in the 300 hurdles.

sixth in the long jump and Marion
Locals Monica Hemmelgarn was
eighth in the same event. Coldwaters
Seth Dippold and St. Henrys Craig
Knapke finished sixth and seventh,
respectively, in the long jump.
Marion Locals 1600 relay team
of Olivia Hemmelgarn, Mindy
Hartings, Alyssa Homan and Molly
Berning was sixth with the Parkway
quartet of Bethany Schlemmer,
Kylene Murphy, Allison Gaerke and
Emilie Baker eighth.
Carmen Meyer of Marion Local
and Mikaya Westgerdes took sixth
and eighth, respectively, in the
discus.
On the boys side, the Cavaliers
finished with 77 points while New
Bremen (55) was third and St. Henry
(52) took fourth. Marion Local (33-
1/2) and Parkway (32) were ninth
and tenth, respectively.
Three area 3200 relay teams
moved on to the regional meet
in Coldwater, St. Henry and
Parkway. The Cavalier foursome
of Jon Wenning, riley Kuess,
Nick Staugler and Mike Seas were
second with the redskin quartet of
Kevin Knapke, Doug Lefeld, Aaren
Hemmelgarn and Jacob rindler took
third. Cameron Strunk, Seth rollins,
Aaron Brehm and Phillip Schlemmer
took fourth for Parkway.
The Flyer quartet of Mark
Wuebker, Clint Knapke, Mitch
Kremer and David Evers took fourth
in the 1600 relay.
The Cavaliers Caleb Siefring
claimed a district championship by
winning the 100 dash in 11.95 while
St. Henrys Jacob rindler won the
800 run in 1:59.52. The redskins
Aaren Hemmelgarn also claimed
a title by winning the 3200 run
in 10:00.30, setting a new district
and stadium record in the process.
Marion Locals Jeff Knapschaefer
took first in the high jump after a
jump of 6-4, tying the district record.
The Flyers Mitch Kremer won the
pole vault with a leap of 14-0.
Parkways Cody Carmean
advanced as well with a third place
finish in the 100 dash with the
Cavaliers Seas taking second in
the 1600 run. St. Henrys Knapke
finished fourth in the 1600 as well
and redskin teammate Doug Lefeld
was third in the 800 run. Marion
Locals Clint Knapke finished fourth
in the 800 run. Carmean was third
in the 200 dash for the Panthers and
teammate Cameron Strunk finished
second in the 3200 run. Coldwaters
Mike Seas also moved on in the
3200 run with a third place finish.

fifth for the orange and black in the
3200 run with St. Henrys Spencer
Schulze seventh. The Flyers Pat
Hess tied for eighth in the high

Parkways 800 relay squad of
Adam Carr, Brehm, Schlemmer
and Kris Gangwer was eighth with
Coldwaters team of Siefring, Nick
Clune, Staugler and Seth Dippold
taking fifth in the same race. Siefring,
Alex Pax, Dippold and Feltz placed
fifth in the 400 relay for Coldwater.

fifth in the shot put.

took fourth in the pole vault while

finished eighth.
All of the advancers will take part
in the regional meet at Troy, which
took place yesterday and finishes up
tomorrow.
Flyers, Cavs take second place at districts
TIFFIN District track
took place around the state last
weekend and the season came to
an end for the Celina boys track
team as no Bulldogs advanced to
the regional meet.
Junior Collen Byer finished
fifth in the pole vault for the
Bulldogs while sophomore Sam
Phares took sixth in the same
event.
In the 300 hurdles, senior
Logan Laux was seventh and
junior Wyatt Jackson crossed the
line eighth. Jackson also took
fifth place in the 110 hurdles for
Celina.

June 8th at the Foxs Den in Celina. rain date is June 15th.
This outing provides a relaxing afternoon of golf and is an
excellent opportunity to network with other business people.
