Statement of Purpose- Master of Business Design, DOMUS Academy

Innovation of any kind needs to be socially responsive, culturally relevant and technologically appropriate for it to have a qualitatively lasting value. The needs of the users and the needs of the market have to be met with an organizational approach to innovative service to society. Creativity and Management have a high degree of correlation; however there is a scope to examine a converging relation between design and cultural patterns a connection which can be explored in detail as it can bring out phenomenal change in the world that we live in. Looking through the last few decades, impacts of innovations in various industries like construction activity, automobile/product industry, computer technology etc. can be observed as to have caused larger cultural transformations. This strong interdependency between design and business is necessary, for innovations to reach to the global masses. As a professional with a design background in architecture and space making, I have had the opportunities to think about such issues while getting exposed in professional working environments of various natures. My initial experience at Eisenman Architects, New York, working with architect Peter Eisenman exposed me to the theoretical and research based approach to design practice and the employing of emergent technologies into the design process for innovative results. From there, with a search into exploring the local market needs, I was led into working in the local design practices in the city of Ahmedabad like KSA-DPS and in firm of architect B.V.Doshi at Vaastu-Shilpa Consultants. A two year research experience in the Research and Development Cell at CEPT University helped me look at traditional crafts and their techniques and analyse their contemporary implications by working on research documents and publications. My academic projects and competition entries, addressing the larger urban scale with the concepts of adaptive-reuse made me look at design through needs of large mass of users and finding creative solutions for todays culturally mixing societies. This led me to an academic research into the subject of Digital Technology and its Effect on the Generative Design and the Design Process and also its larger cultural impacts like Mass-customization of spaces and products. The importance of marketing and management was looked at while developing free-lance projects at the scales of branding, graphics and furniture for emerging corporate firms. Working with non-profit organizations like Manthan and ASAG on projects dealing with various social issues also broadened my vision for a need for a strategic development for social progress. Thus a multi-faceted perspective of the discipline of design is achieved by experiences into global and local markets as well as through research and practice being explored at various scales of the design learning. A lot of business potential and designing potential lies in such ideas and multiple perspectives, which I am looking forward to explore in the future. My interest in the DOMUS Academy, Master of Business Design, Milan; is primarily because of the strategy design and business management background that this course focuses on, which is the training I would need to work on the ideas I have. Also, this course deals with practical experiments of the research directed towards innovations which would help my experience to mature through a lens of a holistic Design Thinking. Studying here I will expand my horizons which will give me a much broader perspective about design. My focus of study has been limited to Interior Space Design and I would like to know more aspects of design which are very well structured in the course unlike most courses which are not multi-faceted. This course also aptly fits my need for finding unconventional design solutions and seeing them as business ideas. At the same time, being in Milan, an urbanized global platform for contemporary design and melting pot of world-class professionals, it would give me an international exposure which I would not get anywhere else. I see the Design Management course as the next logical step, and a life-changing opportunity for me to learn more, and to serve and showcase my work for a global audience. I am passionate and hardworking and would make best use of my skills, talent and thirst for learning, if given the chance to study at the prestigious DOMUS Academy.
