Your plant choice(s) may involve the following types of plants.

Annuals
Last one season then die, but yield tremendous ongoing color display.

Perennials
Last indefinitely and every 3 to 5 years will need to be divided to prevent overcrowded root systems.

Succulents
Fleshy leaved perennials that are unique in that they dont typically become root bound and therefore can potentially last for decades without having to be replaced.

Vegetables and Small Fruits

Food bearing plants like beans, peppers, peas, lettuce, spinach, and strawberries.

Herbs
Culinary and seasoning plants that often last one season in cold climates and live for several years in warmer climates.

Vines
Plants that trail downward and/or climb upward.

Tropicals

Tropical plants are used for interior applications as well as outdoor applications in tropical climates.

Once you have decided what plants you want to grow, you will want to pair the plant type with comparable potting soil.
For Annuals, Vegetables, Small Fruits, and Herbs
Plants that are expected to be used for one full year, you just need a good quality peat-based or coconut fiberbased potting soil. These are available from LiveWall.com or from your local garden center.

For Perennials, Vines and Tropicals

Plants that are expected to last for 3 to 5 years before dividing, you will want to use the LiveWall soil that is designed for this, or a good quality potting soil, with perlite or pumice and/or composted pine bark. Such potting soils will tend to decompose less.

For Succulent Plants

Plants that can last for decades without repotting, you will want to use the LiveWall soil for succulents or a good quality mix that is made for rock gardening. The unique quality of such mixes is that they have a high mineral content (e.g. perlite, pumice, or haydite) and less organic matter, and therefore do not decompose over time. Youre trying to match the soil to the life expectancy of the plant material.

Growing the Plants

Once you have selected your plants and a soil that matches your plants it is time to plant them.
And, with this you have three choices. You can transplant small plants into your WallTer liners. You can grow them from seed yourself. Or, you can hire it done and have your plants arrive grown and ready for spring placement into your WallTer wall planters.

Transplanting Small Plants

This is very easy, first fill your WallTer inserts to the top with soil (you can clean and reuse your inserts year after year or buy new ones from LiveWall.com). Inserts come in 16 inch and 8 inch lengths. Then, using small transplantable plants from your local garden center:

Transplant them into the WallTer linersmatch the soil depth of the original plantlet to the soil depth in the WallTer liner.

Topdress with a tablespoonful of slow release granular fertilizer (from LiveWall.com or your local garden center).

Water gently. Then place in the WallTer wall planter for maturation and enjoyment you will be amazed at the growth.

Growing From Seed

This is very easy, and most appropriate with vegetables. First, fill your WallTer inserts to the top with soil (you can clean and reuse your inserts year after year or buy new ones from LiveWall.com). Inserts come in 16 inch and 8 inch lengths. Then,

Sow the seed, at the recommended spacing and depth (this information is on the seed packet) into the WallTer liners. The general rule of thumb is to sow the seed at a depth of 3X the width of the seed. Cover lightly with soil. Water gently.

Place the WallTers into the WallTer wall planters for germination and maturation.

Keep the soil moist by hand watering with a fine spray nozzle until the seeds have germinated and become well rooted and established. Then, switch to watering just once per day (with the built in irrigation system).

Hire Someone to PreGrow Your WallTer Liners for You

This is for the person that is short on time or who wants to maximize the growing season. If you choose this option, simply ask your local greenhouse grower to plant up the WallTer liners for you and deliver them in well established condition during early spring.

Ongoing Care
Once your planted WallTer liners are in place in your WallTer wall planters, you simply follow the maintenance guidelines outlined in the LiveWall maintenance guide.
The main thing is to establish the correct amount of irrigation run time. It is typically only 1 to 3 minutes per day, depending upon exposure and climate (adjust for your conditions). You will also need to fertilize and you can do this with the FertileEarth fertilizer injector that will administer a dilute amount of fertilizer every time the system is watered. Or, you can apply a granular slow release fertilizer by hand. The maintenance guide goes into more detail and your local garden center professional can help you with this as well.
