Pet Health Tips From Dr. Carolyn Bernier

At least once to twice a day Im asked the question: Why do I need to have a heartworm test on my dog, I already brought in a stool sample?. Dogs require two tests because parasites can infect the circulatory system and the intestinal track. Heartworms are carried by mosquitoes. When an infected mosquito bites a dog, it can inject the microfilaria that will migrate to the heart and grow into adult worms. This can lead to an infestation that can be fatal. To diagnose heartworm, the veterinarian needs a blood sample. Stool samples are used to check for intestinal parasites. There are many varieties, from large round worms to small protozoa-size parasites like Giardia that can only be seen under a microscope. All of these parasites can make your pet sick, can be passed to other animals, and some can infect humans. A small, fresh stool sample (about 2 tablespoons) is sufficient for testing purposes. Both the blood and the stool test are necessary to keep our pets healthy and worm-free.

Absentee ballots in Falls, Sussex exceed past elections

Election day has been the past few weeks for many residents in Menomonee Falls and Sussex. Gov. Scott Walker is facing a recall election against Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. Voters will cast ballots in the election from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 5. Absentee voting started May 21 and ended June 1. Sussex Clerk-Treasurer Sue Freiheit said that as of May 30 the village issued 539 absentee ballots, 68 of which have not yet been mailed back to the village. During the recall primary in May, the village issued 157 absentee ballots. Menomonee Falls Village Clerk Janice Moyer said the village has requests for 2,721 absentee ballots. By comparison, the village issued 1,825 absentee ballots for the eighth district Senate recall election in August 2011, 2,533 absentee ballots for the gubernatorial election in November 2010 and 6,227 absentee ballots in the November 2008 presidential election. Stoiber completes term as Falls School Board student representative

Andy Stoiber completed his term as the student representative on the Menomonee Falls School last week, displaying the wit he showed during board meetings over the past several months. I learned a lot and maybe I can run against one of you, Stoiber quipped. I like you all, so I wouldnt want to do that. It was a great, great experience. Stoiber was appointed to the post Oct. 11. Stoiber has served as vice president of Student Council, president of the National Honor Society, an officer in the Spanish Honor Society, and a member of Future Business Leaders of America, high school band, theater programs and the boys varsity tennis teams. In the biography he prepared for the board last fall, Stoiber indicated he hoped to be cast member of Saturday Night Live. In his comments to the board, Stoiber said he plans to UW-Madison in the fall and will hopefully be going in with sophomore standing and he would want to graduate in three years. He plans to pursue a double-major in theater and film-radio-television programming and work in the entertainment field. Im eager to get on with my life but I loved my years here at Menomonee Falls High School, Stoiber said. I would like to thank all of you for this fantastic opportunity. District Superintendent Patricia Greco said it has been a pleasure to work with Stoiber. She told Stoiber to think of a sign to develop onstage years from now to friends and family back in Menomonee Falls, mentioning how 1970s television host Carol Burnett would pull on her ear as a signal to her family. (NAPSI)The cost of going on a vacation or road trip may pinch your wallet as gas prices are projected to continue to rise, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. While you may be able to adjust your travel plans with shorter trips that are closer to home, one way to take the sting out of the cost of summer travel is to make sure your vehicle is road ready and use products that will improve your gas mileage and save you money on maintenance costs. Simple steps like checking your tire pressure and getting a tune-up will improve your gas mileage. Upgrade your fluids. Not all motor oils are the same, and many people dont know how to select motor oil that will help them get optimum performance out of their car. Upgrading your vehicles lubricants is often the quickest and cheapest way to improve your cars performance and reliability. The switch to synthetic can save you in another way. The number of miles between oil changes can often be doubled or even tripled. Extended service intervals, sometimes as much as 12,000 miles between oil changes, keep vehicles out of the shop and save consumers money. Watch your tire pressure. Buttina and Burlings bittersweet honor

Inaugural scholarships in former teachers names presented
The Menomonee Falls Scholarship Foundation administered more than $170,000 in scholarships this year, but none were any more special than two, $500 awards given in honor of beloved teachers. The inaugural Richard A. Buttina and Ronald L. Burling memorial scholarships were presented Wednesday night at the annual Scholarship Awards at the high school. Buttina was a Naval commander-turned teacher, and he taught fifth grade at Ben Franklin for 18 years. He passed away from cancer on Dec. 25 at the age of 64. Burling taught math at North and the high school from 1972-1997, and coached several sports including gymnastics, swimming, track and football. He passed away from pneumonia and bleeding ulcers on Oct. 5 at 73. On May 23 their families honored the men committed to giving the next generation everything they had. Each presented a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior. It wasnt easy for their loved ones but it was special. "I was very proud to do it. It was very touching," said Susan Buttina, Ricks wife. "Bittersweet," said Mike Burling, Rons youngest son. "I know its something he would have wanted." Buttinas stern military style initially scared students, but they learned; and they learned to like and respect who would later become a favorite teacher of many. Like Amy Bartos, who said she wanted a different teacher entering fifth grade. But she soon became grateful for Buttinas meticulous attention to detail. He turned into one of her favorite teachers. And Bartos coincidentally turned out to be the first recipient of the Richard A. Buttina Memorial Scholarship. She will be attending Minnesota. Requirements for the Buttina scholarship included students completing an essay on what character meant to them. The family picked the top five and let the scholarship committee figure out the rest. "It meant a lot that it was one of his former students," said Susan. The recipient of the Ron Burling scholarship isnt a former student, but shes not far off. Molly Dederich has Rons son, Mike, for math this year. Among the scholarship requirements were an intention to go into education and to have played a sport in high school, which fit Rons passions. For Mike, its like father, like son. Just like dad, Mike teaches math and coaches track, and his two older siblings are in education. Mikes wife, Sara, teaches business at the high school. While Ron retired in 1997, he filled in regularly for teachers on maternity leave and still served as assistant track coach. "Up to the day he passed he worked for the district," said Sara. "Its nice to recognize his honor and what he meant to education," said Mike. Menomonee Falls coed track invite this year was renamed the Ron Burling Invitational. State DOT officials explain plans to designate Hwy. 41 as interstate

Converting US Highway 41 to an interstate highway would help with economic growth in the areas the road serves, state Department of Transportation officials indicated during a public meeting at the Germantown Community Library May 30. The project will involve 132 miles of US Highway 41and would cover the portion of the route from the Zoo Interchange to Green Bay. The public meeting was the second to last session of six public meetings, with the final meeting held the next day at the Wauwatosa Public Library. The proposal calls for submitting a request for interstate status to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in October 2012. At the start of the presentation, Planning Project Manager Tammy Rabe explained that US Highway 41 was improved during the 1990s to remove at-grade intersections and driveways from the corridor and interchanges were installed. As a result, the road already has many of the characteristics of an interstate even though it doesnt have the official designation. I think after listening to my presentation the question youll be asking is not why 41 should be an interstate but why isnt it already an interstate? Rabe said. Rabe stated that the interstate system allows industry to stay competitive with other states, and adding these 132 will put Wisconsin more in line with our neighboring states of Iowa and Minnesota. Rabe stated that the road carries up to 150,000 vehicles per day and also noted that the communities of Appleton, Oskhosh and Fond du Lac are the only cluster of three cities in the midwest with populations greater than 40,000 that are not within 25 miles of an interstate highway. Additional information from DOT officials indicated that the center point of the corridor Fond du Lac is within a one-day drive of all other major metropolitan areas in the midwest. Those portions of the midwest contain up to 15 percent of the countrys population. According to Rabe, Rep. Tom Petri sponsored legislation in 2005 to convert the road into an interstate. Last spring Gov. Scott Walker expressed his support for converting the road to an interstate, and plans call for installing interstate signs by 2013. Rabe stated that steps for the interstate designation include writing a Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), negotiating an agreement between federal highway officials and the DOT and installing interstate signs. A public hearing on the EIS will be held in spring 2013, with a final agreement on conversion slated for fall 2013. Rabe further explained that a Tier 1 EIS would focus on the impact of interstate signage along the route. Any improvements for portions of the road would be addressed through a Tier 2 environmental impact statement. According to information from the DOT, installing the interstate signs will cost approximately $12 million. Rabe stated that the first question asked about the project is what will the route number be? At this time we dont have an answer for that question. She said AASHTO will make a determination regarding the route number, with final concurrence from the Federal Highway Administration. Rabe cited the first portion of the Tier I EIS, which stated the need for the project is to enhance economic development by converting and signing US 41 to an interstate while the need is based on a combination of legislation and economics. Rabe then referred to the second section of the EIS, which addressed the option of not placing the interstate designation on the road. According to Rabe, keeping the road with the current designation would cause no direct impacts to the environment (but) it would also not allow for the economic benefits that are associated with interstate conversion. Rabe citing an online survey of economic development officials stated that access and visibility to an interstate is considered by businesses when seeking to locate in areas, and some companies will locate only along interstate highways. One of the impacts of the interstate conversion would turn existing billboards into non-conforming structures, which means they would not be allowed to be improved or replaced. In general, new billboards will not be allowed along the corridor, Rabe said. During questioning, Germantown Village Administrator David Schornack asked if any of bridges along the route would be removed. Rabe said that some of the bridge would be raised to meet the 16-foot clearance requirement for interstate highways. When asked, Rabe said some of the bridges that would need to be raised are in this area and added that bridge-raising work wouldnt occur on its own but would occur in conjunction with other projects. In addition, Rabe said shoulders to the road would need to be widened and would be done with other projects along the route. During questioning by area residents, Tom Niebler questioned seeking interstate status and then following up with necessary upgrades after the fact. It seems to me youre putting the cart before the horse, Niebler said. Shouldnt you do all that other stuff first? Rabe indicated that while the route does have minor deficiencies, it does otherwise meet the standards of an interstate highway.

Baseball: Falls wins first five games

Menomonee Falls opened the summer baseball season with a 5-0 record, starting with an 11-3 win over Catholic Memorial May 23 and following that with wins over New Berlin Eisenhower (8-5) May 24, Brookfield East (4-2) May 25, Hamilton (73) May 29 and Brookfield Central (10-9) May 30. Against Brookfield Central, Tony Romens drove in two runs while Troy Kenkel and Justin Johnson drove in two runs each for Menomonee Falls Germantown had a 1-3 record after the first week of the season. The Warhawks opened the season with a 1-0 win at University School May 23. Brian Keller recorded 12 strikeouts while allowing two base on balls over seven innings. Germantown followed the win with losses at Burlington (5-3) on May 24, at Kewaskum (8-4) on May 25 and at Cedarburg (4-3) May 31. Hamilton had a 4-1 record after the first week of the season. The Chargers started play with an 11-1 win over Cudahy May 24 and followed that with a 2-0 win over Brookfield Central May 25 and a 6-1 win at Franklin May 26. The Chargers lost to Menomonee Falls May 29 (7-3) but rebounded with a 3-2 win over Greendale May 30. Against Greendale, Mitch Mason and Tim Biron both had two hits and drove in one run each.

Softball: Hamilton upsets Falls

The Germantown girls softball team opened postseason play May 31 with a 5-4 win over Whitefish Bay. With the win, Germantown advances to a June 4 sectional semifinal against Nicolet Hamilton upset Menomonee Falls in a regional final May 31, opening the game with six runs in the first inning and adding two more in the fourth inning. Sami William and Whitney Wnuk both drove in two runs. Sydney Sprinkel recorded four strikeouts in seven innings for the Chargers. Hamilton advanced to the regional final with a 9-5 win at Kettle Moraine two days earlier. Hamilton scored four runs in the third and fourth innings against the Lasers. Hamilton now advances to a sectional semifinal matchup at West Allis Hales June 4. Menomonee Falls ends its season with a 17-6 overall record. Kettle Moraine Lutheran saw its season come to an end with a 5-4 loss to Mayville in a Division 2 sectional semifinal. The Chargers end the season with a 17-9 record.

Menomonee Falls then got a goal at the 65th minute from Rachel Clayton (with an assist by Nelly Botticelli) and Eberhardy at the 71st minutes (with an assist from Hawk). Menomonee Falls advances to a regional final matchup against undefeated Arrowhead at Arrowhead at 11 a.m. June 2. Hamilton ended its season with a 4-0 loss to Grafton. Hamilton ends its season with a 12-7 overall record. Defending Division 3 champion Kettle Moraine Lutheran opened postseason play with a 3-0 win over Living Word Lutheran, as Stephaney Scott, Cassidy Page and Abigail Hoerchner all scored for the Chargers. With the win, Kettle Moraine Lutheran advances to a regional final against Kenosha Christian Life at 1 p.m. June 2.
