1. What exactly is accreditation? 2. How can I use it to compare Calibration Lab A to Lab B? 3. What do I get if I order an Accredited Cal? 4. How is an accredited cal different (or better) from a standard calibration? 5. Is Accredited cal better than ISO 17025? 6. Can I expect to see Z540.3 accredited calibration service?

Scope of Accreditation
How it works: 1. The calibration lab tells the A2LA auditor which parameters it seeks accreditation. 2. For each requested parameter the A2LA auditor then:
i. ii. iii. Spends time with the technicians assessing their competency/measurement technique to measure this particular parameter. Audit the measurement uncertainty documentation. Audit traceability path to a NMI such as NIST or NPL
All Americas calibrations are performed by a lab with the scope-of-accreditation for the relevant parameters. In rare cases, instruments are transhipped to Roseville, CA if needed.

What is the benefit to you If your supplier includes their Accreditation body symbol on the Cal cert for your instrument?

The customers focus: What are you capable of measuring, in what ranges, and how accurate are you?
The scope of accreditation is a listing of all of the parameters that a lab is capable of making accredited measurements in. The lab decides which parameters it wants to represent, but the accrediting body assesses the capability.

Z540.3 Compliance its both the Scope and the individual procedure
1. Meas. Uncertainty of ABC system? 2. Compliance method for 5 digit DMM cal procedure??
1. Look past the front page! 2. Make sure the scope covers all the parameters of your instrument. 3. Make sure the calibration measurement capability (aka. best uncertainty) can measure your instrument. 4. Check what lab standards are used for your instrument in the trace info on a sample cal certificate. 5. Z540.3 Accreditation ask for it A2LA is open for business 6. Look for the accreditation symbol on the Cal certificate.
