Notes from the Pastor: How do we know that there is a Blessed Trinity or One God in three Divine Persons? Some people say that it cant be found in the bible and that the Church invented the doctrine. The truth is the Church did not invent it. We believe in the Blessed Trinity because thats how God reveals Himself to us. It is true the word Blessed Trinity literally cannot be read in the bible, but there are several references that reveal the triune God. In the book of Genesis 1:26: Let us make man according to our image and likeness. Take note of the pronoun us and our in plural. Who are they and how many? We dont know but for sure they are many! Moreover, St. John's testimony is yet more explicit than that of the Synoptists. He expressly asserts that the very purpose of his Gospel is to establish the Divinity of Jesus Christ (John 20:31). In the prologue he identifies Him with the Word, the only-begotten of the Father, Who from all eternity exists with God, Who is God (John 1:1-18). The immanence of the Son in the Father and of the Father in the Son is declared in Christ's words to St. Philip: "Do you not believe, that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me?" (14:10), and in other passages no less explicit (14:7; 16:15; 17:21). The oneness of Their power and Their action is affirmed: "Whatever he [the Father] does, the Son also does in like manner" (5:19, cf. 10:38); and to the Son no less than to the Father belongs the Divine attribute of conferring life on whom He will (5:21). In 10:29, Christ expressly teaches His unity of essence with the Father: "That which my Father hath given me, is greater than all . . . I and the Father are one." The words, "That which my Father hath given me," can, having regard to the context, have no other meaning than the Divine Name, possessed in its fullness by the Son as by the Father. (Catholic Encyclopedia) Ok, there are Three Divine Persons in one God. But what is its significance to us? How does that affect us? As a Trinity, God expresses His love for us. Theology has attributed three different functions divided into three different periods for each of the person of the Trinity: The period of Creation is attributed to God the Father; the period of Redemption is attributed to God the Son, and the period of Sanctification to God the Holy Spirit. All three periods are expressive of Gods unselfish love for us. With the Trinity as our model we are also invited to a participation in this love. As we are united with the Trinity, may we also be able to share this love first with our family and then with our community and to all the people we come in contact with. God bless you all! Theres Still Hope for Marriage In June, thoughts turn to love and marriage. The society page of the paper will increase with pictures of happy couples announcing engagements, marriages, and anniversaries. Sometimes, marriage gets a bad rap. We hear statistics that over 50% of marriages fail, but its not exactly true. Actually, among first marriages, the rate is much lower. What hikes the percent is the high number of 2nd and 3rd marriages. 90% of married Americans stay married, but we dont hear much about them. Nine in ten would marry their spouses again if given the choice. For most of us, marriage is still the great adventure, despite the divorce rate and the practice of living together. Girls dream of their big day at the altar, and guys still chase the girls they want to settle down with and be the mother of their children. We still value marriage and the desire to grow old together. There are more 50 year and 60 year anniversaries than ever before! Speaking of such events, my brother, Richard and his wife, Nancy, are marking their 50th this weekend. I know of two couples, members of this parish at Arma, who will celebrate 50 years on June 23. Helen and I married on that date in 1962; also good friends Ronnie and Joan Black tied the knot on that very same day and year! Marriage is an amazing bond that prefigures our experience in Heaven and symbolizes the union we have with Christ here on earth. Best wishes to Ronnie and Joan, and I hope that they and we have an incredible anniversary.

Feast of the Holy Trinity This weekend, we focus on the great mystery of the Holy Trinity. We learned long ago in catechism that in God, there are three divine persons. The Old Testament said nothing of this, yet evidence shows that He was not alone. In Genesis, God said: Let us make Man to our own image and likeness. Old Testament psalms often have such phrases, Holy, Holy, Holy, anticipating three persons in God. In the New Testament, the best reference is the words of Christ, Himself: Go make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. He placed all three on equal footing. When John baptized Christ, the Father said: Here is my Son of who I am well pleased. And it goes on, And the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove. In speaking of the Blessed Trinity, we attribute to each of the Divine Persons a specific work: The Father creates, the Son redeems, and the Holy Spirit sanctifies. (to consecrate, or set apart as holy) We often say that we cant understand the Trinity, for it is a supernatural mystery, yet we believe it because God has revealed it. Actually, we shouldnt get too upset for not understanding this great mystery, for most of us cant even understand our wives, our husbands, or at times, even our neighbors! We find out new things about family members everyday, yet we still dont understand them fully! But, we continue to believe in them. How difficult, then, it must be for Man to understand God. Simply put, God IS knowledge--He doesnt HAVE it; He IS it! His creatures HAVE it. God IS. God expresses Himself in the things He makes, like an architect does with the buildings he produces. When one has knowledge, he can CAUSE things: A farmer knows about irrigation, so he can save his crops; a mother can bake a pie, so she assists at church functions, or surprises her family; another man can build a bridge with his knowledge, thus we have the Golden Gate Bridge or the Royal Gorge in Colorado. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus revealed Himself to His Apostles the knowledge that He felt they could take in and understand. At the Last Supper, He told them that He was going to die, which filled them with grief. Theres no end to Gods telling us who He is. Well never get to the bottom of God. All truth, not just religion, is Gods truth. Example might be 1+1=2. Well say more about the Blessed Trinity next week since it is very much a part of our worship. The Church addresses her prayers to God the Father, through the Son, in union with the Holy Spirit. Each time we make the Sign of the Cross, we are professing our faith in, and an act of adoration of, the Blessed Trinity. Articles by Marcel Normand Choose Life To bring about the death of a person in order to ease his or her suffering is always wrong. It is always a serious violation of the law of God because it is the deliberate and morally unacceptable killing of a human person.
