Poor quality - worst performer in asia, only 15.3 percent scored 75% in NAT, some students get up to HS without knowing how to read Under-financed education and poor budget allocation Poor governance in rigid authoritarian system - special education fund is not spent well in 'rich' areas or is not enough in 'poor' areas Synergeia - collaborative and participative programs, for accountability and transparency Look at Robredo - Naga City Components of program Education summit Teacher training Parents' training Most important/necessary: Principal who is an effective manager and a supportive school community

You won't have all doors open for you. You just want those doors you want to stay open for you. Sister: Never request and never refuse. Lawyering is not a profession, not a job. It is a vocation. The only way we can embrace our vocation in life is through total surrender. ATTY. RAYMOND SALAS ALTERNATIVE LAWYERING IN MINDANAO Kaka: there is no need to compare NGos with law firms.... Lawyering - employs legal knowlege and skills, works its way through the legal system and through legal processes, and employs the law as a tool. Alternative - works on issues that are not the common concerns of

typical lawyering. In fact, the issues of concerns are not popular fields of legal practice. Related to this, there is also a different group of clientele. Employs creative strategies that are not characteristic of ordinary law practice. The alternative nature of alternative lawyering can also be seen from its critical view of the legal system itself and of the legal profession. Laws should reflect the interests of the majority, not just of lawmakers. Alternative lawyering is more than legal aid. Goal is to lessen the dependence of ordinary people on legal assistance. It is also more than public interest lawyering, it is a bias towards the poor and the marginalized. It is also more than human rights lawyering. It focuses also on social and cultural rights. Alternative lawyering is lawyering for social justice, social change, social development. Is it lawyering for the poor? No, it is lawyering WITH the poor. Atty. Marlon Manuel: When the poor and marginalized are empowered to become lawyers, when they see the law and use it as it should be - as a tool to promote justice, as a catalyst for social transformation - only then can alternative lawyering truly achieve its objectives. It is like a group of swimmers. You can never teach one to swim without him ever going into the water. He should at least dip in it. Davide: To me it is troubling that the lawyers who advocate such worthy causes are called the alternative. An alternative is a second choice. You should be considered the mainstream, the first choice, the true and ideal lawyers. Better yet, the conscience of the legal profession. I will not claim that I live and breathe alternative lawyering....

ATTY. ROMMEL ABITRIA Hindi alternative lawyering, lawyering lang. Lawyering = choice. You can go through with it or back up. Kailangan mo palang lagpasan ang sarili mo. Pagandahin ang buhay mo at ang buhay ng iba For the greater glory of God Baka makapunta kayo ng Boracay! Mangyan and Sumulao farmers Bakit pera vs. walang pera? Baka mali ang sinosolusyonan kong problema. Mas importante pala kung saan ka mas masaya, saan ka at ease, saan ka makakatulong nang mahimbing. Weird criminal justice system Cura personalis - to take care of the whole person Maaaring gumawa sila ng krimen, maaaring nakabilanggo sila, pero mga tao pa rin sila. It's all about doing the right thing. Magis - do better. Cura personalis - take care of the whole person. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam - for the greater glory of God.

It doesn't matter saan ka mapunta. All that matters is you do the right thing, you follow the guidelines Ateneo gave you.
