A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF Apple i-Phone: This document provides a technical description of Apple i-Phone. This presentation is has been prepared to target the audience which is completely unaware about i-phone. This description will include everything about apple i-phone. The components of Apple I-phone, its hardware and its function will be described in this technical description. i-Phone is a Smartphone made by Apple that combines an iPod, a tablet PC, a digital camera and a cellular phone. The device includes Internet browsing and networking capabilities. Like every mobile phone it is used to communicate with people but it is smart since it has many extra things that a busy employee of it field or a business man needs. This wonderful creation is useful for so many tasks like communicating with the people, creating files, sending and checking e-mails, taking pictures and shooting videos, listening and enjoying music etc. This i-Phone is an internet-connected multimedia Smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. with a flush multi-touch screen and a minimal hardware interface. The device does not have a physical keyboard, so a virtual keyboard is rendered on the touch screen instead. (Figure 1) The i-Phone functions as a camera phone (including text messaging and visual voicemail), a portable media player (equivalent to an iPod), and Internet client (with email, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity). The apple i-phone can be described by its physical characteristics, parts and use. Figure: 1

1. Physical characteristics:

I-Phone is extremely thin (only 11.6 millimeters thick) but wider and longer than many comparable devices. The display area is a 3.5-inch wide screen multi-touch interface with unusually high resolution (160 pixels per inch). Unlike most other smart phones, iPhone does not use a hardware keyboard or a stylus. To navigate, a user uses multiple taps and drags to navigate through a mobile version of Apple's OS X operating system. Like iPod, i-Phone synchronizes data with a user's personal computer, using iTunes as client software and Apple's proprietary USB port. I-Phone is compatible with Microsoft's Windows operating systems, including Vista. It automatically detects the Wi-Fi networks. Battery has up to 8 hours of talk, 6 hours of internet use, 7 hours of video of playback, and up to 24 hours of audio playback, lasting over 250 hours on standby. I-phone comes only in black color. Figure: 2

The 9 cm (3.5 in) liquid crystal display (320480 px at 6.3 px/mm, 160 ppi) HVGA touch screen with scratch-resistant glass is specifically created for use with a finger, or multiple fingers for multi-touch sensing. Because the screen is a capacitive touch screen, bare skin is required. Most gloves or a stylus prevent the necessary electrical conductivity. The screen is also capable of rendering up to 262,144 colors.

The display responds to three sensors. A proximity sensor shuts off the display and touch screen when the i-Phone is brought near the face during a call. This is done to save battery power and to prevent inadvertent inputs from the user's face and ears. An ambient light sensor adjusts the display brightness which in turn saves battery power. A 3-axis accelerometer senses the orientation

of the phone and changes the screen accordingly. Photo browsing, web browsing, and music playing support both upright and left or right widescreen orientations. Later, a software update allowed the first generation i-Phone to use cell towers and Wi-Fi networks for location finding despite lacking a hardware GPS. The i-Phone has three physical switches on the sides: wake/sleep, volume up/down, and ringer on/off. These are made of plastic on the original i-Phone. A single "home" hardware button below the display brings up the main menu. The touch screen furnishes the remainder of the interface. The back of the original i-Phone was made of brushed metal with a black plastic accent.

2. Parts & using the object:

Audio:

Loudspeakers are located above the screen and the left side of the bottom of the unit; the microphone is located on the right. Volume controls are located on the left side of the unit and as a slider in the iPod application. Both speakers are used for hands free operations and media playback. Figure: 3

The i-Phone's headphones are similar to those of most current smart phones, incorporating a microphone. A multipurpose button in the microphone can be used to play or pause music, skip tracks, and answer or end phone calls without touching the i-Phone; newer versions also incorporate volume controls. A small number of third-party headsets specifically designed for the i-Phone also include a microphone and control button. Wireless earpieces that use Bluetooth technology to communicate with the i-Phone are sold separately. They do not support stereo audio.

Battery:

The i-Phone features an internal rechargeable battery. It is not user-replaceable, similar to the batteries of existing iPods, and unlike those of most existing cellular phones. If the battery malfunctions or dies prematurely, the phone can be returned to Apple and replaced for free while still under warranty. The warranty lasts one year from purchase and is extended to two years with Apple Care. The cost of having Apple provide a new battery and replace it when the i-Phone is out of warranty is slightly less than half the cost of a new 8 GB i-Phone.

SIM card:Figure: 4

The original i-Phone's SIM card slot shown as open, with ejected SIM card. The SIM card is located in a slot at the top of the device. It can be ejected with a paperclip or a tool included with the i-Phone 3G. In most countries, the i-Phone is usually sold with a SIM lock, which prevents the i-Phone from being used on different mobile networks.

Storage:
The i-Phone was initially released with two options for internal storage size: 4 GB or 8 GB. On September 5, 2007, Apple discontinued the 4 GB models. On February 5, 2008, Apple added a 16 GB model. All data is stored on an internal flash drive; the i-Phone does not contain any memory card slots for expanded storage.

Included items:

The i-Phone include (or included) written documentation, stereo ear buds with microphone, a dock connector to USB cable, and a cloth for cleaning the screen. The original i-Phone also included a dock to hold the i-Phone upright. SOFTWARE:
