An overwhelmingly positive
mood, with repeated refrains
of strong traffic, was mixed
with questions about the
forthcoming Consumer

kickoff of BookExpo
America.
BookExpo is always good

good, strong traffic, he
added, noting that show

Shawn Foster, sales director

also spoke of fabulous foot
traffic in her houses booth.
Foster said the publisher

Two publishers at opposite
ends of the political
spectrum both gave a
hearty thumbs up to the
first day. Marji Ross,
publisher of Regnery, said
her booth was very busy,
especially given that the
show had just gotten under
way. It helps to have a
bestseller, she added,
referring to The Amateur
(which is high on a number
of lists). New Presss Ellen
Adler, meanwhile, referred
to an effervescence
among independent
booksellers that she hadnt
seen in years. They seem
to have a renewed sense of
purpose, she claimed,
noting that the houses The
New Jim Crow has been

the indies.
That effervescence
certainly did seem to be
affecting the booksellers
who talked to PW Show Daily.

Cynthia Compton from 4

got a boost from hearing

against the odds, the little

guy wins. We are the little

from the Agincourt speech
in Henry V and received a
standing ovation.
When anyone validates
the hardships we have, its
very inspiring, said
Norcross, who felt buoyed
that publishers were more
attuned to booksellers this
year. Publishers seem to
be asking for specifics. For
instance, I had one
publisher ask me how we
can best capture preorders.
Cathy Langer, of the

appreciated hearing about

BEA SHOW DAILY DAY 2

BEA Mood continued from page 1

tags filled him with optimism.

Latimer, like Donnelly, was excited
about adding consumers to the mix,
even if he still has questions about
how Thursday will turn out. Latimer
wondered out loud if the key to an
improved BEA lies in making the
event less of a trade show and
more of a book fair.
One BEA veteran, talking off the
record about a show he hadnt seen
change in more than 30 years, said
he thought change needed to
happen, and getting the consumers
into the mix in a more dynamic way
was key. Noting that the key would
be to draw genre readers, this
exhibitor said it was odd to see a
business dramatically shifting to
b-to-c continue to support a show
that is still almost entirely b-to-b.
Yet others still believe the
importance of BEA, and one reason
it need not change, is that its still
about getting booksellers excited
about books. Adam Rothberg at
Simon & Schuster eloquently
explained that for him, the delight
of the show remains in watching
booksellers and writers come
together. I continue to be pleased
by the fact that after all these years,
after all this time, there still seems
to be a magical spark that happens
when booksellers get a chance to
meet authors.
Others at BEA found, in addition
to drawing attention to forthcoming
titles, a much-needed sense of
industry solidarity. Educational
Development Corp.s Randall
White said he was particularly
struck by how many people came
by his booth to offer support for his
decision, earlier this year, to stop
selling EDCs titles on Amazon.
While many people PW Show
Daily spoke to did not necessarily

the excitement around digital
books and the merging of digital

Kudos to the Indies

For those who believe BEA is, and
should remain, an event for getting
authors and their books in front of
independent booksellers, this
years show was working on both
sides of the aisle. As S&Ss
Rothberg also noted: If the
purpose [of the show] is to put
authors front and center, then
there is still a utility to what we do
here. That utility, it seems, even in
an industry known for being full of
glass-is-half-empty folks, is felt. As
Anne Storan, owner of Paragraphs
Bookstore in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, put
it: There is a recognition that
indies are more important than
ever before when it comes to
activating the cultural heart of this
community by providing the quality

Among the traditional publishing

The number of traditionally published print books rose 6% in 2011,

to 347,178, according to preliminary
figures released Tuesday morning
by Bowker. For the first time, this
year, Bowker combined self-published titles with books from mainstream houses in the traditional
column and the increase in output
was led by self-published books,
Bowker said. The number of print
books published by traditional
houses was about flat in the year.
(The number of all self-published
titles released by Bowker at the

was 211,269, which includes print
and e-books.)
Total book output from traditional and nontraditional companies fell 63% in 2011, to 1,532,623,

BEA SHOW DAILY DAY 2

On Disease, the Israeli Army, and Supernatural Wolves

In a packed room at the Javits Center
Monday afternoon, booksellers, editors, publicists, and journalists got
together for what BEA show director Steve Rosato rightly called one
of the fairs marquee events. Its
the annual Editors Buzz Panel, which
invites a handful of editors to sing
the praises of promising books.
Kicking off the panel with the only
nonfiction title featured, Millicent
Bennett at Free Press talked up
Susannah Cahalans Brain on Fire
(Nov.). Bennett, whos edited a number of high-profile authors, including the recent National Book
Award winner Let the Great World
Spin, began by admitting Cahalans
book was one I would have loved to
acquire, but didnt. She inherited
the book from Hilary Redmon, after
she left Free Press for Ecco. The
book follows Cahalans strange and
frightening descent into madness
after a rare autoimmune disorder
quickly ravaged her body and her
mind. After landing a job as a junior
reporter for the New York Post,
Cahalan began having unsettling
health problems, which she initially
dismissed as stress: hallucinations
and paranoid thinking. Then, a
severe seizure landed her in the

hospital. The book, Bennett said, is

partially an inquiry into identity
and memory as well as a powerful
family saga and a compelling medical mystery. Bennett also grabbed
the crowd by revealing that Cahalan,
who miraculously (and luckily)
recovered, is thought to have been
infected by someone sneezing on
her on the subway.
Kendra Harpster at Random
House led the fiction selections with
Rachel Joyces debut novel, The
Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry,
which was published by Doubleday
in the U.K. in March. In the novel
Joyce, a British actress who quit the
stage after having children and
launched a career writing radio
plays (as well as teleplays for the
BBC), explores the bizarre decision
of the titular retiree to walk across
England after heading out of the
house one morning to mail a letter.
The book has already gotten off to a
strong start in Europe, and
Harpster described the book as disarming, heartwarming, and unforgettable. She said the book, which
chronicles Harolds journey as well
as its effect on his relationship with
his wife, Maureen, is a love story in
reverse as the farther Harold gets

from Maureen, the more their

thoughts match up.
The lone male editor on the panel,
Eli Horowitz at McSweeneys, was
touting John Brandons third novel,
A Million Heavens. Calling the work
funny, sad, strange, gritty, real,
and bizarre, Horowitz laid out a
novel with multiple story lines that,
he said, surprisingly coalesce. The
novel begins with a young piano
prodigy in New Mexico inexplicably
falling into a coma during a performance. The other characters
drawn into the plot include a lonely
mayor; a possible angel; an angry
orphan on the run; a gas station
owner who wants to be on the run;
and a supernatural wolf that may
be presiding over it all. Horowitz
said the novel winds up being a
supernatural love story.
Tackling much weightier subject
matter, Trish Todd at Simon &
Schuster, was pushing Vaddey
Ratners debut, In the Shadow of
the Banyan. Ratner survived the
reign of the Khmer Rouge in
Cambodiashe was a child when
the regime took over in the 1970s
and instigated the genocide there
and the book is a fictionalized
account of a young girl growing up
in what became known as the killing fields. Likening the book to
titles like Little Bee, The Kite Runner,
and The Diary of Anne Frank, Todd
said the novel is about our ability to
transcend unspeakable horror
through storytelling.
Trotting out another debut author,
this one a mere 25 years old (who
sold her book before finishing her

senior year at Harvard), Alexis

Washam at Hogarth touted Shani
Boianjius People of the Forever
Are Not Afraid. The title follows
three teenage girls, all seniors in
high school, living in a small Israeli
town. The girls, engaged in the typical behavior and obsessions that
come with that ageobsessions
about boys, popularity, the success
of a particular partyare also
growing up surrounded by violence, and all three are set to fulfill
their obligatory two-year stint in
the Israeli army. Washam said the
book, one of the first acquired by
the recently launched Hogarth
imprint at Crown, offers a brilliant
fusion of pop culture with unsettling violence. She said the novel
truly grabbed me by throat... and
my heart.
The last novel of the panel, was
Antoine Wilsons Panorama City.
Lauren Wein, at Houghton Mifflin
Harcourt, talked about the novels
narrator, a manchild, named
Oppen Porter, who grew up in a
bizarre and sheltering California
family. Likening the narrator to
such characters as Holden Caulfield,
Wein said Oppen believes he is on
his deathbed, though he is not, and
begins recording his life story, for
the benefit of his unborn son. The
novel is ultimately about growing
up, but it unravels around the journey Oppen takeshe leaves home
and has a misadventure in which
he encounters an array of characters; Wein described it as a strip
mall version of the Odyssey.

CONFESSIONS: A MEMOIR by Jodie Rhodes Stuns the Publishing World

With Her Sizzling Expose I By Stefanie Payne I Posted on March 1, 2012

Internationally known literary agent Jodie Rhodes has stunned the publishing world with her no-holds-barred book CONFESSIONS: A MEMOIR
which, to date, has received 39 Amazon Five Star Reviews and reveals the
startling and in many ways shocking life she lived before becoming an agent.
Published on 9/16/11, it is available on Amazon, Kindle and Barnes & Noble
THE KIRKUS REVIEW CONFESSIONS: A Memoir
Literary agent Jodie Rhodes grew up in an era when women succeeded in marriage, not business. But her
parents toxic relationship, a family legacy of divorce, plus her burning desire to write, all sent Rhodes the
other way. Precocious, tenacious and pretty, she charged into the world of 1960s advertising at the age
of 20 and fairly conquered it, moving on and up like a cyclone, becoming VP Media Director of N.W. Ayer,
but smarts and drive couldnt save her from personal tragedies. A business primer with winning marketing
gambits, and a romance memoir with all the confessions readers savor.
MMD NEWSWIRE OCTOBER 24, 2011
Released in Early September 2011, Confessions: A Memoir is already being lauded by online reviewers as A startling (in its truthfulness) and compulsively readable story...[It is] told in a streamlined, literary
and wonderfully crafted voice. The writing throughout is beautiful, almost hypnotic, and adroitly-paced. You
would be hard pressed not to want to go on and on...In fact, soon after Confessions hit the literary market,
it received more than 35 Five Star Amazon Reviews.
CLARION REVIEW
Confessions: A Memoir is an illuminating look at the life of a top literary agent and the dramatized story of
her childhood, her personal and professional relationships, as well as her prior career in advertising. Fascinating, funny, and sometimes shocking, this candid page-turner reveals a woman who endured extreme
highs and lows. Those inclined to be envious of Rhodes accomplishments and lifestyle should realize that
she has suffered more than average to achieve more than average. Confessions is a valuable contribution
to the industry and will likely attract multiple readers.

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER ONE
I was a late bloomer and by the age of 15 had come to the glum conclusion I was doomed to end up an
old maid. If anyone had told me then that Id have more men in my life than Elizabeth Taylor, I would have
assumed they were either so high on drugs that they couldnt see straight or they wanted to borrow money
from me.
There has never been an old maid in my family tree and I tried to find comfort by reminding myself
that I come from a long line of people who make disastrous marriages. Perhaps fate had decided to stop
this endless chain of misery with me, since I am literally the end of my family as my brother never married,
by turning me into a kindly albeit aging librarian whod lead children away from their own miserable families
into the wonderful world of books.
EXCERPT FROM LAST CHAPTER
When I started my agency in 1998, my chances of selling a writers book were equal to my chances of
starring in Sex and The City. I didnt know a single editor, didnt have a single writer, lived 3000 miles away
from the heart of the publishing business in New York and was in such dire financial straits that becoming
homeless was a real possibility.
During sleepless nights I envisioned the headlines: PUBLISHING WORLD STUNNED WRITERS
DEVASTATED. It has been discovered that the Jodie Rhodes Literary Agency, believed to be a legitimate
business, actually operates out of a shopping cart and its founder is a bag lady.

Audio All Day

With the growth of online sales and
digital formats, the way consumers
discover and create buzz about
newaudiobooks is changing,
saidGoodreads CEO Otis Chandler
in his keynote address kicking off a
busy Audio Publishers Association
Conference at theJavits Center on
Monday.
With fewer bricks-and-mortar
bookstores and more conversations
aboutaudiobooks taking place on
the Internet and over social networks, audio publishers must
leverage online tools to launch and
market upcoming releases,
asserted Chandler. As it happens, a
good example of a powerful tool
publishers have at their disposal is
Goodreads.
Goodreads, of course, is the
extremely popular site for readers
and their book recommendations.
The site boasts nine million registered users and features virtual
book shelves, user reviews, book
clubs, and social networking. While
known primarily for helping consumers discover and share books in
print, the site has a significantaudiobook focus, said
Chandler. Users have added at

least 1.1 millionaudiobooks to their

virtual shelves, he reported, and
they submitted more than 72,000
audio reviews.
In an afternoonwide-ranging
panel discussion on the State of
the Audiobook, industry insiders
candidly described theaudiobook
market in need of expansion and
offered strategies to boost business.
The panelfeaturing moderator
Chris Lynch of Simon & Schuster,
Beth Anderson of Audible, David
Cully of Baker & Taylor, and Chuck
Gorman of Barnes & Noblestruck
an optimistic but pragmatic tone in
addressing the challenges facing
the industry.
Gorman described this years
audio sales at Barnes & Noble
which still sellsaudiobooks on compact discas relatively robust
and made a case for CDs as a viable
format for audio, indicating that
consumers are more concerned
with price rather than format. In
the case ofaudiobooks especially,
the consumer is in a lot of ways format agnostic, he said.

Green will autograph copies of
The Fault in Our Stars this morning,
10:3011:30 a.m., at Table 26 in the
autographing area at a ticketed
signing.
Published in 1993, Lois Lowrys
Newbery Medalwinning The Giver
was written as a stand-alone novel,
yet the author followed up that book
with 2000s Gathering Blue and 2004s
Messenger. The trilogy becomes a
quartet in October, when Houghton
Mifflin will publish Son with a
150,000-copy first printing.
I said many times publicly that
The Giver would not be more than a
single book, but time passed and I
began to write a second novel, which
I also viewed as a single book,
Lowry explains. It was not until I
was three-quarters through Gathering
Blue that it connected to The Giver. I
made that link explicit at the end of
the book when I mentioned Jonas,
but my editor, Walter Lorraine,
asked me to take out his name,
since he didnt want the second
book to be dependent on the first.
So I just referred to him as the blueeyed boy. But many readers saw the
connection.
Messenger then followed, Lowry
explains, partly because I was captivated by the character of Matt
from Gathering Blue, who became
Matty in the third book. She was
certain that the sequence would
remain a trilogy but reconsidered
when she continued to receive a lot
of mail from readers asking about
Gabriel, who was a baby in The
Giver. I had mentioned him in the
third novel, so Id write back and
say that he was alive and well, but
that didnt seem to satisfy readers,
remarks the author. So I sat down
to write a fourth book, focusing on
Gabriel as a teenager.
Lowry notes that as she wrote the
fourth novel, Something surprising
happened. She became curious
about a character shed never introduced to readers: Claire, the young
woman who had given birth to
Gabriel. She then became the
main character of the first two sections of Son, says Lowry, and the
final third of the novel answers
questions about Gabriel.
Wrapping up the story arc was
satisfying for Lowry. I loved doing
it, which I suppose means I subconsciously have been wondering
about these characters all these
years, she says. Even though I
wrote other books, they stayed with
me, and I kept wondering what happened to them.
Lowry remembers fondly an earlier stint as speaker at the
Childrens Book and Author
Breakfastback in the days of ABA.
The other speakers were Cynthia
Voigt and Robert McCloskey, who
got a standing ovation before he
even opened his mouth, she
recalls. I would have been the baby
of the group then, and it was a great

honor to be there. Im happy to be

back, now as the grande dame. It is
nice to think about the fact there was
a progression of authors whove
gone before me, and that theres a
progression of others coming after
me.
Following todays breakfast,
Lowry will sign a keepsake broadside of Son, 10:3011:30 a.m., at the
HMH booth (3447).
Kadir Nelson is pleased to be
back at BEA, which he hasnt
attended for a number of years, and
calls it a tremendous honor to be
asked to speak at todays breakfast.
He plans to talk about creating the
art for I Have a Dream, an October
picture book from Random Houses
Schwartz & Wade imprint that presents the iconic excerpt from Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.s historic
1963 speech on the steps of the
Lincoln Memorial during the March
on Washington.
Being asked by his publisher to
illustrate Kings words was also
important to the two-time Caldecott
Honor illustrator and Coretta Scott
King Award winner. I thought that
doing a picture book around this
speech was a great idea, and I am
honored to have an opportunity to
illustrate it, he says. This is a oncein-a-lifetime project.
Nelson concedes that creating art
to accommodate Kings monumental words was a bit daunting at first.
The speech is certainly very farreaching, and in many ways very
abstract. There isnt a clear narrative or story. I tried to figure out
what his words meant to me, and
what they might have meant to all
who actually heard it. With a bit of
contemplation, meditation, and
soul searching, I finally had more
clarity on that.
In preparation for illustrating the
speech, Nelson visited Washington,
D.C., and made a tour of the newly
unveiled Martin Luther King Jr.
National Memorial and the Lincoln
Memorial. It was great to walk along
the Reflecting Pool, and stand on
the steps where Martin gave his
speech, and look over the landscape,
he says. But what drove the images
in the book more than anything were
his words. I really tried to give the
images as much power as his words
have.
Readers of I Have a Dream will
also have a chance to hear the power
of those words, as the book is packaged with a CD of King delivering
his speech, which Nelson views as a
great bonus for children. These
great words stand by themselves, of
course, he observes. But his voice
has such resonance, and to hear that
voicewith its emotion and
strengthmakes his words infinitely more powerful.
After the breakfast, booksellers
can meet Nelson at the Random
House booth (3940), where he will
sign f&gs of I Have a Dream, 10:30

Its Childrens Day!

Today marks the first-ever
American Booksellers
Associations ABC Childrens

chock-full of educational sessions,
roundtable discussions, networking opportunities, author hobnobbing, and other festivities.
The idea for the daylong event,
says Joy Dallanegra-Sanger, ABAs
senior program officer, was conceived after the ABA-ABC merger.
One of our goals after the two organizations merged was to make sure
we continue to provide education
for childrens

Will Schwalbe
ATribute to His Mom and
Books

Mary Anne Schwalbe was an educator who

worked at Harvard University and the Dalton
School in New York City and spent 10 years
building libraries in Afghanistan. She loved
books, a passion shared by her son, Will, a former editor-in-chief of Hyperion Books and
founder of Cookstr.com. When his mother was
diagnosed with cancer, Schwalbe began accompanying her to chemotherapy treatments.
During one of those trips, a casual conversation
about what she was reading evolved into a book
club with two enthusiastic members.
Some books were given to us, some recommended by friends or staff at
favorite bookstores, Schwalbe recalls. And there was the if you knock a
book off the shelf, you buy it rule, which meant we read The Collected Stories
of Somerset Maugham. The Schwalbes choices for the book club ranges from
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to Murder in the Cathedral and Suite
Franaise. People of the Book and Continental Drift had themes that entranced
us. And Daily Strength for Daily Needs gave my mother great calm and solace.
My mother felt strongly that books tell you what you need to do in the world,
and if youre moved by a book, you have a responsibility to act. She loved

Khalid Hosseini because he introduced readers to the people of Afghanistan.

Schwalbe told his mother before she died that I wanted to write a book
about us and the books wed read. Her initial response was, Oh, no, but she
soon began e-mailing me notes for the book. The End of Your Life Book Club,
a testament to the power of love between mother and son and the power of
reading in our lives, will be published this October by Knopf.
Mary Anne Schwalbe died at home, surrounded by the books she loved.
When I think back to her last days, Schwalbe says, I remember she could
look over and see her favorite books all lined up in a bookshelf on the wall
beside the bed. These books she loved brought back wonderful memories for
her, and just seeing them gave her great comfort.
A heartfelt quote from the book says it all: I will never be able to read my
mothers favorite books without thinking of herand when I pass them on and
recommend them, Ill know that some of what made her goes with them; that
some of my mother will live on in those readers, readers who may be inspired
to love the way she loved and do their own version of what she did in the world.
Will Schwalbe will be signing ARCs today at 4 p.m. at the Random House
booth (3940).

Deni Bchard
The Bank Robbers Son

In 2007, Deni Bchards novel, Vandal Love,

won the Commonwealth Writers Prize for best
first book, but the Canadian-American author
was missing from the U.S. scene until this May,
when Milkweed Editions released Bchards
novel (starred by PW) as well as a brand-new
memoir called Cures for Hunger. In it, Bchard
reveals his own novel-worthy tale: how the son
of a French-Canadian bank robber grew up to
be a globe-hopping journalist and award-winning author.

I was 13 when my mother told me my father had been a bank robber,

Bchard tells Show Daily during some downtime between events in Ottawa
and Toronto. But Id always suspected he was a criminal. I recall being aware
for a long time that something was different about him and then being very
relieved to have this intuition confirmed at last. The discovery gave Bchard
the confidence to pursue his dream of becoming a writer: If my father could
rob banks, then I should be allowed to do anything. His fathers misadventures also inspired Bchard to live as big as he had and test my boundaries.
Bchard developed a tendency for genre hopping and adventure seeking,
which has taken him to some 40 countries during the past 15 years. It was in
Afghanistan just a few years ago thatBchard figured out the right approach
to the story of himself and his father, which he had begun writing in the mid1990s, following his fathers death. I rewrote that draft hundreds of times,
he says, which eventually led him to write Vandal Love. In 2009, I was standing on a rooftop, looking out over Kabul, thinking how difficult it was to
describe a place with so much suffering, and then I saw how I could rewrite
Cures for Hunger. It came as a flash, and I rewrote the first half of the book in
Kabul.
Bchard describes writing a memoir as the hardest thing Ive ever done.
Writing a novel certainly presents other challenges, but none that feels anywhere near as difficult to me. His next project is an ecological nonfiction report
from the Congo: Like many of us, I am concerned about the environment and
want to use whatever tools I have in its favor. Though his first love was fiction,
Bchard has discovered how much I enjoy nonfiction. With fiction, despite
its freedom, its a monumental job to create a world and then to people it.
With nonfiction, the freedom is in having that world and its people before me,
and the challenge is, of course, to recreate it authentically in narrative.
However, he adds, I am burning to write another novel.
Deni Bchard will be signing today at 11 a.m. in the Milkweed Editions

Rachael Ray
Burger Queen

If you think a burger is simply ground meat

between two halves of a bun, celebrity chef and
television star Rachael Ray will set you straight
in her latest cookbook, The Book of Burger, published this month by Atria Books. I love playing
with the idea of what people think of when they
think of burgers, she tells Show Daily. You can
make a burger out of anythingseafood, vegetables, all kinds of ground meats.
For Ray, the family food guru, this is the first
cookbook shes written that focuses primarily
on one kind of food. Why the burger? Ive been
burger obsessed for years. And I like what a burger says. It says, friendly,
everybodys welcome, casualits okay to use your hands, and I just think it
deserves more respect than it gets.
An unusual feature of The Book of Burger is that it is a smart book. There
are QR codes throughout that readers can scan to get additional cooking
information. Ray explains, You will get all the extra recipes I write after the
book if theyre burger relatedso theres added value there. There are a
couple of interviews that I did for the book and short videos [in the e-book]
showing the assembly of a couple of the bigger burgers, so its just a different
idea of what books can be and should be in the future. Ive always been very
proud of the fact that everything I associate myself or my brand with, including cookbooks, is the biggest value of its kind, and we just keep adding to that
value with each new book concept. Youre getting more bang for your buck.
Its hard for the burger maven to choose her favorite recipe from the book,
but there are several that are big winners. One of my favorite sliders is the
seven-layer slider that I designed for the South by Southwest music festival a
couple years back. Its definitely the highest slider Ive ever seen. I just love
the idea of seven toppings on one little burger that you can eat in a couple of
bitesits fun. And I love a lot of the sloppy recipes. Messy Giuseppe is probably my favoriteits an Italian-style sloppy joe. I like the sloppy dog recipes,
tooI like playing around with hot dogs. I love the little spicy corn dogsthe
deviled corn dogs. I love the fried chicken sliders on a biscuit. Its just a really
cheerful collection of recipes to read through. It makes you want to hang out
with your friends and have a burger party.
Ray will be signing books at the Atria booth (3657) today, 23 p.m. Sorry,

with TWO Points of View

Lincoln Peirce
Yes, a kids obsession with comics really can
lead to big things. Lincoln Peirce is a case in
point. His Big Nate character, a high-energy
sixth-grader who serves up big laughs and gets
lots of detentions, is the star of a daily syndicated comic strip, an island on kids site
Poptropica.com, a number of popular comic
strip compilations, and a series of bestselling
chapter books.
Back in the day [the early 1970s], I used to
devour those Peanuts compilations you could
buy for 50 cents, Peirce says. And I did what
most kids doI copied a lot of things. But by about fifth grade, I started creating my own characters. It was a real boost to my self-esteem to show them to
my friends and family and get positive feedback.
Peirce kept sharpening his cartooning skills, even as he pursued a more
serious track academically. I studied fine art and art history in college,
thinking it was a prudent career choice, he notes. But I was always doing
comics on the side. The formal education did serve him well, however,
enabling him to teach high school art while trying to get his comics career off
the ground.
Though the Big Nate strip has been running in newspapers (now more
than 250 of them) since 1991, it was only a few years ago that Peirce considered the leap into the book world. I was looking for an opportunity to do
some compilations. But in the aftermath of the success of Diary of a Wimpy
Kid, publishers were looking to succeed in a similar format.
In fact, Wimpy Kid and Poptropica creator Jeff Kinney played a role in
Peirces publishing journey. Jeff had sent me a piece of fan mail when he
was a student at the University of Maryland 20 years ago, Peirce says. We
had gotten to know each other, and he introduced me to some publishing
houses and helped me get my foot in the door.
Peirce now feels right at home as an author. I wasnt sure Id be good at it
or enjoy it, he says of tackling chapter books. But I love it and Im having
the time of my life. Peirce will be doing triple-duty autographing today. Hell

A girls contagious smile sets off a chain of good

in Because Amelia Smiled (Candlewick Press,
Sept., 2758), the latest picture book by David
Ezra Stein, whose Interrupting Chicken was a
Caldecott Honor book. The story, which he wrote
in 1999 while a student at Parsons the New
School for Design, came quite quickly to the
author. The art did not.
I had just spent time with my sister, Stein
recalls. We are both interested in Buddhism,
and shed talked about how you can choose to
be happy or choose not to be. Like if someone
cuts in front of you when youre crossing the
street, you can get angry and carry that feeling around all day, or you can let
it go. As I walked home after riding the subway, which I always find inspirational, my brain clicked into gear and the story started to write itself. I began
to jot it down on the paper bag I was carrying. By the time I got home, the
whole story was more or less there, except for the ending.
The following week, Stein began a course in childrens book illustration,
and his teacher, author and illustrator Pat Cummings, gave the assignment
to come up with an idea for a picture book. When Stein showed her his story
about Amelia, she was impressed and suggested he show it to a publisher. An
editor also encouraged the author, who then had some difficulty creating

put on the page and what not to put, he explains. I was 22 and really into
drawing from life and drawing from my imagination, but I wasnt ready to
illustrate a book. After months of trying, I put the book aside for a long time.
Stein went on to publish other picture booksInterrupting Chicken, which
he worked on with Candlewick editor Sarah Ketchersid, was his seventh
and finally felt ready to tackle Amelia. I showed Sarah a batch of ideas for
my next project, and she picked Amelia, he says. Ten years after Id written
it, I realized it must be Amelias time. Stein found a new illustrative style for
the book. I call it Stein-lining, he explains. It imitates a printmaking look
for the line work of the book by using label paper. I apply crayon to label
paper, turn it over, and press on the back to create a line on the artwork. Its
like creating my own carbon paper, using different colors of crayon.

Harold Kwalwasser
Mission: Improve Education

Harold Kwalwasser is the first to say that he is perversely proud of having

been general counsel for the Los Angeles Unified School District under Roy
Romer, 20002003. He came to the position by way of a career in public service, having served on the staffs of three U. S. senators and as chief of staff for
a California state senator. Now a writer and consultant on education,
Kwalwasser says he wrote Renewal: Remaking Americas Schools for the
Twenty-First Century (Rowman & Littlefield, Mar., 3758) more for parents and
community leaders than for educators. But make no mistake, he thinks education reform is everyones businessand attainable.

W E E K LY

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 , 2012

To write Renewal, Kwalwasser studied 40 high-performing and/or transforming schools around the countrypublic, private, religious, and charter
schools among them, serving students from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgroundsto analyze what works and present in detail what it takes
for an educational system to succeed.
He divides the book into four sections, each addressing key questions of
school reform: (1) how to recruit, train, and motivate school leaders; (2) how
to recruit, train, and motivate service providers (i.e., teachers); (3) how to
continuously improve and adapt the schools; and (4) how to not to lose sight
of the customer (i.e., students).
For most of the 20th century, Kwalwasser asserts, American education was
mass-producedfrom the way teachers were employed and trained to how
children were taught. He says the old system operated more like a car plant
than a place committed to the professional, artisanal instruction designed
to graduate students with skills needed in the 21st century. Kwalwassers
premise in Renewal, and the one he found to be the key to success at the
schools he studied, was to get administrators, teachers, community leaders,
and parents to abandon the outdated mindset of mass production in schools
in order to see education as a service business.
I am not asking parents to micromanage
their school districts, says Kwalwasser. I want
them to understand what good schools look like.
Going back to that car plant for a moment:
Kwalwasser found that schools that adopted
the total quality management tenets (proposed
by W. Edwards Deming and others) that turned
the Japanese auto and other industries around
after WWII were the key to successful schools
in this century.
Total quality management is tough, he says.
And theres a lot of push-back and resistance.
Teachers already feel overworked, he acknowledges, but Kwalwasser says time and again the
schools that called for quality and remained
committed to evaluating and training the edu-

Steve Stern
Yiddish with aTwist
Its a daunting thing to publish a retrospective
book, says novelist and short story writer
Steve Stern, referring to his new collection, The
Book of Mischief: New and Collected Stories
(Graywolf Press, Sept.), which draws from work
throughout his 25-year career. Six of the stories
have never been collected before; all have
Jewish themes. My writing friends say, dont
get excited, its just a book of stories. But Ive
never been so excited about the existence of a
book. I would like to honor it with events that
might promote it. Ive always been good at discouraging people from reading my work. With this one Id like to find lots of
readers.
Less known than other writers who have tilled similar fieldshis publisher
refers to him as being quite famous for being unknownStern has won
awards and a loyal readership, but he also finds himself ghettoized in bookstores under the fiction/Judaica category and wonders, How did that happen? I still ask myself that, he says. I dont write for a Jewish audience.
Stories are stories. I use the Jewish experience as a filter, but the stories are
meant for a universal audience.
Yiddish writers I.L. Peretz and Isaac Babel are major influences on Sterns
work, though his ability to read Yiddish is very halting, Stern says. I read in
translation. My love of the tradition was my first encounter with Isaac Babels
Odessa stories, where he evokes his childhood in a Russian slum amid poverty
and grotesque oppression, but he writes with a richness that I coveted. I loved
the elasticity of writing that could deal unflinchingly with grim reality while
bending into magical directions. The magic didnt exclude the reality, and reality didnt exclude the magic. I hadnt seen that before in fiction. Now people
take magical realism for granted. In those days it seemed like something new.
His lack of non-Jewish readers is unfortunate, Stern says. I didnt grow up
in an observant home, and I am still not an observant Jew. I love Dickens as
much as I love Babel, Grass and Calvino as much as Malamud. If there are
influences, its as much Dickens as it is Philip Roth. But Ill take whatever
readers I can get. At times Im surprised I have any audience at all.
Stern will be signing ARCs today, 34 p.m., in the Graywolf booth (3463).

Hanna Pylvinen
Never Say Never

AT THE S HOW

Its all about writing a juicy story.

Hank Phillippi Ryan

traces two disparate stories. Former TV news reporter Ryland, now disgraced, tracks a candidates secret mistress at Rylands new gig at a local
newspaper, while Det. Jake Brogan investigates a possible serial killer. But
as the election draws closer so do the two story lines, and Ryland and Brogan
suspect they may be on the trail of the same person.
Inspired by a magazine article on Jenny Sanford, Ryan says, I got the idea
when Mark Sanford [then governor of South Carolina] told his wife that he
was going off hiking on the Appalachian Trail, when he was meeting his
Argentinian mistress. Why would someone be the other woman? At the end
of the article, Jenny Sanford said, You can choose your sin, but you cannot
choose your consequences. I got goose bumps. This is my book, I thought,
secrets, sex, betrayal.
Ryan, who regards her life as research, didnt need to do a lot of additional digging to launch her Jane Ryland/Jake Brogan series.
Paraphrasing Mark Twain, she says, Youve lived it, now you can write it. In
the 1970s, she worked as a campaign staffer, then as a legislative assistant
on a U.S. Senate subcommittee before turning to journalism and a job with
the Washington bureau of Rolling Stone magazine. Pointing to a tradition of
political shenanigans that extends well beyond the John Edwards trial to
Gary Harts derailed 1988 presidential campaign and since, she notes, One
of the things we do as reporters is cut through the static and get to the truth.
But journalism prepared her for fiction writing in other ways. Its all about
telling a juicy story, she says.
Ryan will be signing copies of her new book in the Forge booth (3358) today
at 9:30 a.m.

The mantra of M.F.A. programs was you wont

sell your book, remembers Hanna Pylvinen.
And I certainly never expected to live a writers life at this young age. But at 27, Pylvinen,
with an M.F.A. from the University of Michigan
and a MacDowell Colony residency, has indeed
defied the odds and will see her first novel, We
Sinners, published by Henry Holt this August.
The Rovaniemis of We Sinners (parents and
nine children) belong to an ultraconservative
church (no drinking, dancing, or TV) in modern-day Michigan. Like any family, they struggle with sibling rivalry, parental expectations,
and trying to find their own identities within
such a large family. When two of the children
venture from the faith, the family fragments
and a haunting question emerges: do we believe for ourselves or for one
another? The children who reject the church learn that freedom comes at
the almost unbearable price of their close family ties. And those who stay
must struggle with the temptations of modern culture.
Its a story Pylvinen knows all too well, as she was raised in the Laestadian
Lutheran Church, an ultraconservative sect. So how did she travel from
believing to the moment she felt she must leave her faith behind? I was a
senior at Mount Holyoke and had written a creative writing thesis entitled
Unbelieving. It was only then that I truly looked at the people around me I
felt distanced from or sorry for . . . and realized I was one of them. Pylvinen
describes her departure from her church as a loss, not a liberation, and I
sometimes look at old friends and the community and see how easily I could
have stayed.
One thing Pylvinen wants to make very clear is that We Sinners is not part
of a national conversation around fundamentalism that skews to sensation-

alism. Its too easy to forget these are rational people making choices for very
real and important reasons. We Sinners is not an exposit does not uncover
the secret or sordid hypocrisies of those who claim to be faithful. Its real revelation is people who are rather ordinary, whose faith falters. Perhaps the
real fear of fundamentalism is not that those who believe are so very different,
but that they are the same.

Dinty W. Moore
Zen Writing

In a world where we are bombarded with

texting, tweeting, Facebook updates,
e-mail, and all sorts of other distractions,
Ohio University creative writing professor
Dinty W. Moore offers to writers a still,
small voice amid the madness. I think we
need a mindful approach, he explains,
the type of paying attention and slowing
down a writer needs to practice, even
before he or she starts putting word to the
page. Moore admits, In many ways, the
basic teachings of letting go that are part of
Buddhism seem entirely incompatible with
the highly meticulous and in many cases
obsessive practice thats necessary to be a
successful writer. At the heart of it, I am trying to reconcile the two.
He tells Show Daily, What you see on the surface and what you see with a
quick glance is never going to take you to the deeper place that comes with
paying slow attention. So if its a memoir and youre writing about your family, you have to spend time with your memory and examine it, not just record
the surface of it. If its more literary or narrative journalism and youre going
to write about a rodeo in northern Colorado, you cant just breeze in like a
reporter, take a few notes, ask a few questions, and breeze out. Theres a
story there, a layer underneath the layer, and another layer underneath
that. All good writing is from looking at those lower layers.

Mindfulness is a sense of close

paying
attention combined with being
in the moment.

Dinty W. Moore

Moores book The Mindful Writer: Noble Truths of the Writing Life (Wisdom
Publications) evolved from quotations about creativity and craft that Moore
posted daily on his Facebook page. Most of them were from writers, but they
also came from visual artists and songwriters. He notes that most of the people he quoted were not self-proclaimed Buddhists. Many of the best quotes I
found were from Flannery OConnor, who was a devout Catholic and would
spit in my eye if I said I thought that what she wrote resonated with
Buddhism. But she talks about grace. Grace and enlightenment are very
similar types of concepts with different names.
For Moore, The book itself is a meditation on where inspiration comes
from, a meditation on how someone turns inspiration or an idea into a piece
of writingand that is often not an easy step for people. They have their
ideas, and they stare at the page, and somehow the connection isnt made.
Once you have written something, the concept of deeply looking can
enhance revision. It can help you take the work youve created and make it
stronger.
And thats where being mindful comes in. As Moore puts it, It simply is a
sense of close paying attention combined with being in the moment. Its the
reverse of what so many of us dowere walking down the city street, thinking about our next appointment, or were sitting at the dinner table with our
children, worrying over what happened at work that day. Mindfulness is
everything from tasting the food thats in front of you to really listening to
your children or to your significant other and hearing what theyre asking,
which is often something deeper than the surface conversation.
Moore is signing copies of his book at Wisdoms booth (4142A) today at 2
p.m.

Wendy Corsi Staub

Time forTerror

After the tragic events of 9/11, bestselling

author Wendy Corsi Staub was haunted by two
things. First, that crime rates dropped drastically in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks. The cops were all busy downtown,
and obviously everybody was distracted. I
always thought if you were diabolical and
wanted to do something, that was a good time to
do it because the city was in chaos, Staub says.
The other consequence that intrigued her as
a suspense writer was that lower Manhattan
was cut off from the rest of the world. Staub tells
Show Daily, Communications were down and
you were really isolated, so I wanted to place a
character down there.
Staub waited a decade to write about that moment, because it was so raw.
Nightwatcher (Avon, Aug.) is the first book in her new trilogy; Sleepwalker
comes out in September, and the final entry, Shadowkiller, comes out in
February 2013.
The first book has an urban setting, while the other two take place in the
suburbs. I really listened to my readers and went back to my rootsthe suburban wife, Staub says. Thats where I built my name in terms of writing suspense for women. I like to bring danger close to home in the place where you
least expect it and explore the idea that youre never safe, even in your own
home. My readers like the idea that a villain is hiding behind a familiar face.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 , 2012

A former New York City detective was a great source for Staub, who found
him by using social media. I put it on Facebook: Does anyone know a New
York cop who would be willing to talk to me? And our cousins husband said,
Yeah, my buddy Johnyou gotta talk to him. When Staub asked the
retired detective how he felt about his fallen brothers that terrible day, he
stopped her in her tracks. Thats an FDNY thingcalling each other brothers. Cops would never say that! They dont call each other brothers! Staub
notes, Those little details make something authentic, and I always like to
make it as real as possible.
A familiar face at BEA, Staub thinks the publishing industry is rebounding.
Last year everybody was scared and on shaky ground with bookstore chains
closing and e-books coming out. Now people are more comfortable. There
are more opportunities. There will always be books, and with e-books theres
another marketmore people to buy books and more places to buy and read
them. So its really all about things opening up in the publishing industry, not
about shutting down.
Staub will be signing Nightwatcher galleys at Table 4 in the autographing
area today, 1111:30 a.m. She will do additional signings at the Mystery Writers Association booth (4451), 2:453:15 p.m.

world-weary police detective Carl Mrck and his sidekick, Hafez el-Assad,
both employees in Department Q, the Copenhagen police division for the
coldest of cold cases. The Absent One (Dutton, Aug.) is the second book in the
series, with many more no doubt to come.
Adler-Olsen has put in time as a publisher, an in-house editor, a composer
of music for movies, and a worker in the peace movement. He has also written three highly successful international thrillers. The Department Q series
got its start when a well-known Danish film producer suggested Adler-Olsen
do a police story in the tradition of Swedish crime coauthors Maj Sjwall and
Per Wahl. His initial reaction was that that wasnt for him. What interests
me is writing about preventing crime, not solving it, he says. The police
work under loads of regulations and rules which restrict each individual officer. Nevertheless, I was intrigued and thought a great deal about how to
sidestep these restrictions. When I came up with the scenario of having a
police officer who was not welcome anywhere in the system and who didnt
care what people thought about him and basically just wanted to do what he
himself wanted, I realized that the concept had materialized.
Thrillers, Adler-Olsen says, have the clear advantage that no subject is offlimits: To me that opens up possibilities and gives me room for more indepth research, which is a huge part of my motivation. I find that the reader
gets involved in the story in a different way, and the good old bag of tricks
which, for example, Alfred Hitchcock usedsuch as suspense where we
know something about a person which is unknown to that personare forceful elements which make people read faster. And then there is the fact that
thrillers are often more exciting to watch than crime movies. Who would not
like to see a great thriller? I certainly would.
Adler-Olsen has huge respect for booksellers, without whom, he says, he
would not have achieved anything. Thanks to their word-of-mouth recommendations my readership has slowly evolved year by year. I feel indebted to
the booksellers and do everything I can to return the favor.
Today the author is signing ARCs at Table 20 in the autographing area,

Allegra Kent and Emily

Arnold McCully
A Mutual Admiration Society

Author-illustrator Emily Arnold

McCully has been a fan of Allegra
Kent since, as a college student sitting
in nosebleed seats, she first saw the
famed ballerina perform with the New
York City Ballet in 1959. But the creator of Mirette on the High Wire, which
received the 1993 Caldecott Medal,
never dreamed that her life would
become intertwined with that of Kent
more than 50 years later. When my
editor sent me the manuscript for
Ballerina Swan (Holiday House, Feb.),
and I saw her name on it, I thought,
Oh my God. It was incredible, says
McCully.
For her part, Kent has been a fan of McCullys since first sight as well. Kent
told Show Daily that two years ago she saw several of McCullys illustrations
displayed on a sideboard in the office of Grace Maccarone, her Holiday
House editor. She had no idea at the time that McCully, whose picture books
she was familiar with, having read them to her two granddaughters, had
painted the watercolors she admired. Kent was so taken with the artwork,
she recalls, that she exclaimed, I wish this person could be my illustrator!
Now, Kent says, she feels like the luckiest person in the world to have had
McCully illustrate my book. Kent, who is renowned for having been a creative
muse of the legendary choreographer George Balanchine, became McCullys
creative muse as the illustrator worked on art to accompany Kents tale about
a swan that wants to dance at the ballet but has to first overcome obstacles,
such as, Kent explains, that with her strange feet, she would have to work
on her turnout.
As she created a dummy picture book for Kents approval, McCully recalls
constantly thinking about Kents possible reactions to the artwork. Would
she like it, would she be happy with it? Its different when its your own text,
says McCully. The illustrator says she was especially concerned about get-

ting the poses right, including the not perfection of students. Making the
swan assume the poses that are described was especially challenging but
fun, says McCully, who conducted her research by examining photos of
actual students taking classes at the New York City Ballet. McCully notes
that she learned so much about ballet during the process, she can now imagine herself dancing, even though she has no training.
In the end, Kent approved the illustrations, with only a few suggestions
regarding the poses, and the two finally met for coffee. Developing a friendship with her is such an extraordinary experience, says McCully of Kent,
relating that the two share a common philosophy that theyve brought to
their work, including Ballerina Swan: in order to achieve grace, one has to
work hard and not give in to failure.
Kent and McCully will sign finished copies of Ballet Swan at Table 16 in the
Claire Kirch
autographing area today, 34 p.m.

John Edward
Help from the Other Side

It should come as no surprise that renowned psychic John Edward gets guidance for his fiction writing from unusual sources. I always joke around and
say I want to put on a book, Written by John Edward and his band of merry
invisible men. I dont think I write like a writerits kind of strange, I write
like a psychicIm capturing the movies that somebody allows me to see,
he explains to Show Daily.
Edward came up with the characters for his latest novel, Fallen Masters
(Tor, Sept.), over the course of 10 years when he periodically went to
Hollywood to pitch a spiritual television series idea. They each lived in a different universe, and I couldnt get them out of my head. I knew them so well,

W E E K LY

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 , 2012

I liked them so much that I started thinking,

well, wouldnt it be funny if they met.
Edward, whose syndicated television show,
Crossing Over with John Edward, is seen in
more than 100 countries with a following of
millions of viewers, travels the globe for his
work. No wonder that he does all of his writing on planes. I put my headset on and usually listen to a soundtrack. Im a big fan of
Lost, and Im a huge fan of Murray Gold, the
composer for all of the Doctor Who shows, so I
pop one of those, and depending on what
scene Im writing, I then put that music to
match as the background noise.
Like his two previous novels, this one has
multiple characters, ranging from a U.S. president and a rock star to a psychic in the Caribbean and a cable news host.
Edward tells Show Daily, I like to follow multicharacter arcs; I like to watch
their transitionwatch what happens.

I write like a psychicIm capturing the

movies
that somebody allows me to see.

John Edward

Edward would like readers to take away the idea that every individual can
make a difference in the world. A lot of people dont realize that they have a
voice and that their thoughts manifest a reality, and simply choosing to be
more positive can ripple out to somebody whos right next to you. It just takes
a little bit of light to alleviate all the darknessthats my mantra.
Here at Book Expo, Edward will be signing ARCs today, 12 p.m., in the
autographing area at Table 21. ARCs of Fallen Angels will also be given away
at the Tor booth (3358), starting at 2 p.m. Show Daily couldnt resist asking
Edward how he predicts his book will sell. He laughed and said, I know my
book is going to do well because I have a huge fan base. You dont have to be a
Hilary S. Kayle
psychic to know that.

Child admits. Some of them are saying, Oh, thats great, some are saying,
Oh, thats terrible, and Im saying, Wait til you see it!
Child chose not to be the movies screenwriter because Ive done screenplay writing, and I know that as a screenwriter youve got to be so brutal and
callous about tearing the book down and building it back up. And thats the
last thing a writer wants to see done to his workevery word means something. They would have been very happy for me to be involved, but I decided
to entrust it to a great team and stay out of their way. But they involved me [in]

were very courteous, generous, and inclusive, and I felt like a real part of it.
Child is perfectly clear on whats next. Filming is done, and the movie comes

18 from Blue Rider Press. Along with his dayto-day, year-to-year experience in a supermaximum prison, Echolss memoir details the
botched investigation that put him behind bars
and the forces that gathered around his cause

and ultimately freed him, as well as his two friends, who together became
known as the West Memphis Three.
Writing was my escape, Echols told Show Daily in an e-mail while traveling across the country. It allowed me to sink inside myself and black out the
horror around me. Writing allowed me to articulate the internal landscapes I
turned to when the outer world was crushing me to death.
Echols credits writing with keeping him alive until he won back his freedom, and the support of people who joined his cause provided much-needed
hope while he was on the inside: Random people from all walks of life would
send me letters, and I would strike up friendships with them. They reminded
me that the world had not forgotten me, and that kept me going.
Some of those random people were celebrities, in particular, performers
such as Marilyn Manson from the heavy metal music scene. It was their love
for heavy metal music that initially cast suspicion on the West Memphis
Three, as a zealous investigator convinced himselfand a jurythat the
murders in question were part of a satanic ritual. Echols says that in the
end, it was all the attention paid to the case which got me out, and the
involvement of celebrities was a major factor in raising awareness: Having
evidence is only 50 percent of the battle. You can have all the evidence in the
world saying youre innocent, but unless the outside world cares and pays
attention, the courts will sweep it under the rug and murder you anyway.
They do not want to admit they made a mistake.
Publishing a new, definitive memoir was a difficult but cathartic process
for Echols, but in a way thats hard to articulate. When others read it, its
almost as if they help me carry the heavy timesand they arent quite as
heavy anymore. He hopes that his story gives readers a deeper sense of how
the justice system works: My case is nothing out of the ordinary. There are
tens of thousands of innocent people trapped within the system.
Echols is currently enjoying a measure of celebrity himself, having been
invited onstage by Marilyn Manson at the Golden Gods awards (for excellence in heavy metal) to wildly enthusiastic applause. He plans to continue
pursuing a full exoneration and to keep writing: It has always been a huge
part of what helps me to cope with the world, he says. I started writing at
the age of 15 and will most likely never stop.
Echols signs galleys at the Penguin booth (4028) today, 10 a.m.Mark Schultz

Here Comes the Judge

Judge Lynn Toler, who

shes not here to scout

her show; Judge Toler is
going to preside over
signing ARCs of her
August release, Making
Marriage Work: New
Rules for an Old Institution (Agate).
After all, who would know better the
rules for a successful marriage than
Judge Toler, who has heard sad stories of marital failure from thousands of estranged couples over the
years? Even though Judge Toler
deals more with warring individuals
than blissful lovers, she insists that
people in marriages are looking
not to get divorced. They just need
a little advice so they dont wind up
in divorce court or even worse, on
Divorce Court.
Theres a requiem out there.
Theyre saying marriage is obsolete, Judge Toler explains, because
marriage has changed: women are
economically, legally, and socially
more independent than ever before,

so marriage isnt as
essential to a womans
survival as it used to be.
The single biggest mistake people make when
getting married these
days, Judge Toler argues,
is basing the decision on
the most irrational of criteria: falling in love. Now,
dont get her wrong,
Judge Toler is all for love
and romance and flowers and Valentines Day. Approach
marriage, Judge Toler says, with all
the dedication and seriousness with
which you would approach employment. It might sound trite, but marriage really is work, and your spouse
is your co-worker in the job of life.
Her original title of Making
Marriage Work was I Already Made
That Mistake. After her husband
objected about TMI concerning their
own marriage in the original draft,
she toned it down, but left in enough
details that everyone would get it.
Judge Toler will be signing at

Director of the MIT Press Ellen
Faran tells a joke enjoyed in-house
among her colleagues: We only
sign em up if they are hard to market! With titles that challenge easy
categorization, its not hard to
understand the humor. We often
publish books in new areas, and we
need help from booksellers to literally find a place to shelve them in
the store, says Faran. We sometimes publish a textbook before
there is even a course for it.
One forthcoming title that defies
classification is Digital_Humanities
by Anne Burdick and four others
(Oct.). The book provides a gamechanging report on an emerging
field, and it may also be hard to
shelve, says Faran. This situation
provides just one example of why
we treasure our partnerships with
booksellers. Our list is not always
easy to sell, but it is consistently valued by readers.
And so it has gone for 50 years for
the MIT Press. Year after year since
its launch in 1962 (its first title
under the MIT imprint was Loeb,
Overbeek, and Wiersemas The

press has focused on emerging
fields of inquiry and interdisciplinary workthe difficult, the arcane,
the up-and-coming, the visionary.
Holding together the disparate

the modernist look of the presss

Today the press publishes more
than 200 new titles a year and 30

Who You Calling Dummy?

It has become part of the lexicon.
You name a topic, and there is
likely to be a For Dummies
book about it or in the works. But
it all started in 1991 with the publication of DOS for Dummies.
Going into its 21st year, For
Dummies has come a long way,
having been part of Wiley since
2001.
Over 250 million For Dummies
books and millions more licensed
products have been sold in the U.S.
alone, says Andy Cummings, v-p,
publisher, For Dummies technology
and new business development.
Hes been working on the branded
series for 18 years. More than 62
million American adults have
bought Dummies books, he adds,
owning on average 3.5 Dummies
titles each.
Things are constantly changing
and evolving, says Cummings. He
points out that the topics of the
recently published titles featured
in the BEA booth (3722)Food
Blogging, Pinterest, Online
Community Management, and
WordPress for Dummiesdid not
even exist five years ago.
The Dummies recipe over the

years has been to enlist compelling

experts in their fields to present the
most up-to-date and easy-to-follow
instructions for tackling their subjectsoften on the cutting edge of
technology and communication.
Cummings said the Dummies
team works hard to make sure it is
pursuing the topics at the fore of
market interest in all fieldsand it
also takes suggestions from
Dummies users. In addition, the
company looks for strategic partnerships when it sees an opportunity, such as pairing with AARP for
Social Security for Dummies, which
has become a runaway bestseller.
But whether its technology or
Running a Food Truck (a title coming in August), Cummings says
readers can continue to rely on the
brands classic hallmarks, from

its black-and-yellow design

to its easy-to-follow, authoritative material on a selected
subject. We are not going to
change that formula, he says.
Aside from its success in print
and e-books, Wiley has recently
revitalized its online Dummies
presence. Cummings says that
traffic on Dummies.com increased
by 50% last year. There are thousands of articles online as well as
entertaining and informative
how-to videos. Dummies even has
its own YouTube channel.
Among the forthcoming books on
display at Wiley is one that goes
beyond the Dummies mold: The

The newest release is Capt.

officers undercover operation to
get himself arrested by the Nazis
and imprisoned at Auschwitz in
order to smuggle out intelligence to
the Allies about the then-threemonth-old camp and to build a

Witold Pilecki (pronounced VEEtold pee-LETS-kee) survived nearly
three years of starvation, disease,

his mission before escaping from

the camp, received by the Allies

How did Tegnazian get to be so

one question I always get asked,

How to Thrive in Business

For every Facebook,
Twitter, Yelp, Tumblr, and
Foursquare out there in
cyberspace, there are
many Internet businesses
youve never heard of but
may some day. Amacom,
with offerings that span a
wide range of business and
leadership topics, has a
slew of optimistic books at its booth
(3831) that tell not just of others
successes, but also reveal the game
plan to follow to try to get there
yourself, if you are so inclined.
Prominent among these are Scott
Foxs Click Millionaires: Work Less,
Live More with an Internet Business
You Love (May 2012) and Dennis
Perkinss Into the Storm: Lessons in
Teamwork from the Treacherous
Sydney-to-Hobart Ocean Race,
written with Jillian B. Murphy
(Nov.). Both books stem from the
authors firsthand experiences
Scott Foxs as a successful Internet
lifestyle business entrepreneur and
speaker on e-business start-ups,
and Dennis Perkinss as a diligent
interviewer of participants in a
deadly 1998 race and a participant
himself in the race over the same

course in 2006.
You have to be upbeat
with inspirational success stories but also give
the reader something
solid to work from to create their own success,
says Amacoms executive
editor Christina Parisi,
adding that the market is
always ripe for the right
business book, and that
the best formula combines
inspiration with nuts-and-bolts
information.
Into the Storm is a good example, Parisi says, pointing out how
teamwork saved the day. Making
an analogy to the publishing industry, Parisi notes that booksellers
cant escape the storm that is brewing. Youre not going to survive the
race if you are trying to escape the
storm that is the market right now.
Foxs Click Millionaires counsels
that you can find a niche you enjoy
online and start your own Internet
lifestyle business around it parttime. Build it up over time, and you
can make money, while enjoying
your life more, too, Fox says. Fox
will be in the autographing area
today, 1:302 p.m., at Table 8, signing

its one of our bestselling books. We
have sold 50,000 copies. The book was

know was that
apparently every
academic in the

book and there were
no copies, so we tapped into a market that we didnt even know
about! And that kept us going
through the lean years.
The company had also signed up
with Consortium for distribution,
continued publishing literary fiction, and branched out into politics. Lasner explains, My wife and
I are political junkies. We decided,
Lets just do books that we love,
and by this time, the political
blogosphere on the left had gotten
very big. It was a good way to get
nonfiction books cheap because
the authors were not household

keep wondering whats going to

For the future, the publisher

BEA SHOW DAILY DAY 2

W E E K LY

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 , 2012

Globetrotters, Spiders, and Sharks, oh, Guinness!

Once again Guinness World
Records shows that it is an equalopportunity record-breaking organization by bringing along a sampling of superlative fun to BEA. A
couple of years ago, the most tattooed woman graced the booth; last
year the oldest female body builder
was on hand to flex and take photos
with attendees. This year Guinness
brings along two record holders
from the Harlem Globetrotters: at
7-ft.-8-in., Paul Tiny Sturgess is the
tallest living basketball player, and
teammate Kevin Special K Daley
has made the farthest hook shot at
466. Both will be in booth 3534
today, 11:30 a.m.1 p.m., and again,
23 p.m., for a meet and greet and
some Globetrotting showmanship.
Hailing from England, Stuart
Claxton, the marketing manager
who has been with the company 10
years, says he is particularly looking forward to meeting Sturgess,
who is also a Brit. Its hilarious,
says Claxton about Sturgesss claim
to world-record fame. Were not
known for our basketball players.
All country-of-origin favorites
aside, Claxton says one of the things
most attractive about Guinness

World Records is
that it has something for everyone to
enjoy and relate to
or be shocked by.
Among his favorite
records this year
include First Lady
Michelle Obamas
celebration of more
than 300,000 people
worldwide doing the
most jumping jacks
for one minute in a
24-hour period; the
tallest living married couple at 134
total (he at 610, she
at 66); the worlds
largest hot dog (7 pounds, $90, in
Chicago); longest time spinning a
quarter (23 seconds); and even
Justin Bieber getting the most dislikes on YouTube for his Baby video
(two million dislikes out of 267 million views).
We always make sure it has new
and fresh content, says Claxton
about the annual volume. Guinness
World Records 2013 has several new
features, including infographics,
augmented reality, and a secret,

digital-only 13th
chapter.
With infographicsas Claxton
explains, images and
comparisons found
on every page
readers get a visual
and textual way to
relate to the material. For example,
instead of just stating
the strongest animals are the larger
beetles of the
Scarabaeidae family,
which are mainly
found in the tropics,
the entry goes on to
say: In tests these beetles were
found to support 850 times their
own weight upon their back. As a
comparison, the infographics show,
in a trestle weight-lifting stance, a
human can support up to 17 times
his own body weight. Or as Claxton
put is, it is like a man lifting 10 fully
grown African elephants.
Guinness has an iPad in the booth
to demonstrate its new augmented
reality feature that Claxton says,
literally makes the book come to

life. By scanning a smart phone or

iPad over select pages, the record
breaker becomes three-dimensional. But some of the entries are
not for the squeamish: a great white
shark jumps out, and the worlds
largest spider exits its hole and
walks across the page. Its huge
and hairy and nasty, says Claxton
about the spider. We love it.
As for that secret 13th chapter,
Claxton says it is accessible with a
code and includes never-beforeseen content, including a day in the
life of the adjudicators who travel
the world to authenticate records.
Its our own way of trying to bridge
the gap between hardcover and digital books, Claxton adds.
Guinness sells three million
books a yearwhich would measure eight Mount Everests laid end
to end, and might be a record in
itself.
Guinness sees its mission as celebrating ordinary, everyday people
doing extraordinary things. In the
end, says Claxton, anybody can
break a record, and thats part of
the fun of Guinness, one of the
worlds most recognizable brands.

Panting Over a Tea Bag?

It had to happen: a parody of the
bestselling 50 Shades of Grey. And
who better to pull it off than author
Andrew Shaffer (Great Philosophers
Who Failed at Love), whose witty
Twitter alter egos, @EvilWylie and
@EmperorFranzen, are followed by
hundreds of book reviewers, journalists, and book bloggers.
When I read 50 Shades of Grey,
recalls Shaffer, it seemed almost
like a parody of romances from the
1970s. It was funny on its own, but I
thought I could push the lever on a
few things and take it even further.
Shaffer admits hed failed at writing a romance of his ownI
couldnt stop myself from going to
the ridiculousso giving parody a
try seemed an intriguing option. He
set to writing and two days later
passed the idea by his agent, Brandi
Bowles at Foundry Literary. How
soon can you finish it? asked Bowles.
A week, replied Shaffer, who
immediately regretted his answer.
He hunkered down in his home in
Lexington, Ky., and, supported by a
case of Red Bull, actually met the
deadline by working from 9 a.m.
until midnight. I was writing in a
way Id never written before. I felt at

liberty to let my mind

go absolutely anywhere. Ive always
liked dinosaurs, I
thought. Can there
be dinosaurs in the
book? Da Capo
Press executive editor Renee Sedliar heard Shaffer
was at work on a parody and
immediately (and shamelessly, it
should be said) contacted his agent

for the manuscript, recognized

its genius, and made an offer
shortly thereafter. The advance
is not being paid in tea bags.

Parenting Goes High-Tech

Some of the ideas in Vicki Lanskys
Practical Parenting Tips (Book
Peddlers, June) are just as relevant
today as they were when the book
was first published by Meadowbrook
Press in 1980. For instance, when
your child throws a tantrum,
whisper in his or her ear: the
screaming may stop or the child
may giggle. If that doesnt work,
disappear into another room for a
while. But other tipslike running
the vacuum to make white noise so
that a fussy baby will go to sleep
have fallen out of favor when
theres an app for that.
According to Lansky, Practical

Parenting
Tips,
which has sold more than
700,000 copies to date,
had been revised and
updated four times since
its initial publication until
2010, when Meadowbrook
reverted the rights to her.
As Lansky looked over
the book before reissuing
it under her Book Peddlers imprint,
she realized the book was dated,
especially when it came to using
technology. After all, the last
Meadowbrook edition was released
in 2003, before social media and
Skype became an integral part of
the parenting landscape.

an attempt to get close to her. But
hes also a moody bastard whose 50
shames constantly threaten to
overwhelm her. Can Earl Grey and
Anna ever have a normal life
together? Or will his dark desires
and constant smirking drive her
over the edge?
You may find the answer in the
chapbooks Andrew Shaffer will be
signing in the Perseus Books Group
booth (3604) today, 45 p.m. And Da
Capo will also be giving away Earl
Lucinda Dyer
Grey tea bags.
We took out the stuff
about VCRs and tape
recorders, she tells PW
Show Daily. Everyone uses
MP3 players these days.
Its a good book, made
better, Lansky insists,
disclosing that a fair
amount of the text was
updated. A new cover was
added to the new edition.
The greatest transformation as
far as Lansky is concerned is that
Practical Parenting Tips is now
available in digital format.

What could be one of

the big books of the
fall, Michael Enniss
The Malice of Fortune
(Doubleday, Sept.), a
historical novel set in
Renaissance Italy with
undertones of Umberto
Ecos The Name of the
Rose, almost didnt
make it into print. It
took a determined
agent, a writer willing
to rework the manuscript (for years), and dozens of
booksellers who read and liked an
early draft to turn around its fate.
This had to have set a record,
says Ennis, referring to the dozen
years he worked on the book, which
he calls my Vietnam. I was in it so
deep, I couldnt get out of it. In the
early 1990s, he published with Grove
and Viking and wanted to try something else. When he read Roger
Masterss Fortune Is a River, about a
collaboration between Leonardo da
Vinci and Niccol Machiavelli to
divert the Arno River, he knew he
had his characters: Machiavelli, the
student of human nature, as the
first forensic profiler, and da Vinci,
the first CSI. All he needed was a
crime, a set of serial murders.
Once Ennis had his premise, he
spent a decade researching and
writing the book, breaking only to
do freelance articles. The first hint
of potential roadblocks came when
he submitted the book to his agent,
who he didnt think got it. So Ennis
sent it over the transom to Dan
Lazar at Writers House, who
e-mailed him 45 minutes later to
ask for the entire book. The manuscript went through a couple of
drafts before Lazar sent it out. I fell

flat on my ass, says

Lazar, who worked
with Ennis on a second
round of revisions. This
time when he submitted it, he got a single
offer from Lara
Hinchberger at
McClelland & Stewart
in Canada and took it.
The aha moment for
breaking out what
Lazar was convinced
was a special book
came when his former assistant
Nikki Furrer, who owns
Puddnhead Books in St. Louis, Mo.,
said, Why dont you let me read it.
Thats when Lazar and Ennis decided
to print 60 paperbacks on Lulu.
The goal was the Algonquin ad
with booksellers. The ideal was 10,
says Lazar. Even though the book
hadnt been published yet, it got
dozens of comments, including one
from Mitchell Kaplan, owner of
Books & Books in Miami, who said,
[it] deserves to be published and
published well, and I cant wait to
have the opportunity to hand-sell it
to my customers.
Lazar sent the manuscript out a
third time with the edits that
Hinchberger made and the quotes.
This time Carole Baron at
Doubleday made an offer. To date,
The Malice of Fortune is scheduled
to be published in 10 countries.
Ennis will be signing copies of the
galleys with eight pages of boundin bookseller comments today,
11 a.m.noon, at the Random House
booth (3940). As for what Ennis is
working on now, its selling the
book. And, yes, he did revise it once
more before Doubleday printed the
Judith Rosen
galleys.

Shipshape Freight
Big news for publishers of any size
who want an economical way to
ship freight in and out of the U.S.:
BookFreight, a U.K. company with
global locations, is promoting its
new services here at BEA.
Marketing director Rochelle
Sommer tells Show Daily, The
motivating factor for this new initiative was driven by a gap in the
market. Many freight forwarders
do not want to look after a small
shipment of books, as the load isnt
big enough (under 100 pounds).
Many publishers also find their
options limited and often far too
expensive to go through their normal agents, so will probably end up
using a courier service.
The best part about this service is
that BookFreight has taken the hassle out of shipping small orders
while at the same time offering

competitive rates. Sommer

explains, The reason why this service offers real savings to publishers is due to our buying power. Last
year BookFreight shipped over 250
million books. We are able to get
excellent freight rates, which
includes courier traffic.
The company has also created
the BookFreight Rate Calculator so
that you can find out costs in seconds, using weight, volume, or book

Nine Steps to Reduce Stress

Long before Whole Foods brought
healthy food to Americas dinner
tables, Paul Huljich cofounded an
organic food company that was
ahead of its time in his native New
Zealand. He was chairman and coCEO of Best Corporation when he
had a complete mental breakdownbrought on by stress.
Since then Huljich has spent his
life becoming an expert on how to
manage stressbut not before
being told he would never be cured
of his severe bipolar disorder.
Fourteen years later he is a drugfree stress conqueror, and he presents all that he has learned about

managing stress in his new book,

Stress Pandemic: The Lifestyle
Solution (Mwella Publishing/
Midpoint Distribution, July).
Stress has become a pandemic
and affects everyone, says Huljich.
So he wrote Stress Pandemic as a
toolkit for people to tackle their
stress. And he knows what he is
talking about, having come to the
USA to seek treatment at the Mayo
Clinic and the Menninger Clinic. At
both places Huljich was told his
bipolar condition would eventually
break through his medications. I
told my doctor, Im a time bomb, he
remembers.

So Huljich decided to
take matters into his
own hands. He began
researching the causes
of stress and listened to
those who suffered from
its effects to learn how
to manage it. The result
is Stress Pandemic.
In it, Huljich isolates
nine steps to stress
reduction and uses illustrations
inspired by daily walks in Central
Park (having moved to the Rock
what he calls New York Citya few
years ago to face the most stressful
city in the world). The nine steps in

Make Way for Karen Kingsbury

With Karen Kingsburys new book,
The Bridge (Oct. 23), Howard Books
hopes the Christian superstar will
make advances in the ABA market.
The first in a 10-book deal
Kingsbury signed with Howard, a
division of Simon & Schuster, The
Bridge comes on the heels of Loving,
her most recent book for Christian
house Zondervan, which debuted
on the New York Times bestseller
list in April at #1. We want to open
Karen up to a whole new genre of
readers, says Jennifer Smith,
Howard director of publicity. This
is a book for people who love books,

Murder and Mayhem

At Prometheus
The creation of Seventh Street
Books, the new mystery/thriller
imprint from Prometheus Books
(booth 2934), was announced last
fall, but things are just now getting
rolling, with the lead titles chosen
and the first catalogue scheduled to
appear soon after BEA. The
imprints logo, a
raven, is a reference
to Edgar Allan Poes
chilling poem.
Heading the list in
October are two
books the publisher
says set the tone for
the new imprint.
Mark Pryors The
Bookseller: The First
Hugo Marston Novel
is a series mystery
that begins with the
abduction of an
elderly Parisian
bookstall owner, the
first of several booksellers who disappear. The author, an
assistant DA in Austin, Tex., makes
his debut with the book. Erec
Stebbinss The Ragnark Conspiracy
is a globe-spanning thriller in which
FBI agent John Savas confronts an
American bin Laden as the world is
brought to the brink of war. Both
books are paperback originals.
Four other new titles and three
reprints round out the first list.
Seventh Street, so named after
an address in Philadelphia once
lived in by aesthetic forebear Poe,
is headed up by editorial director
Dan Mayer, a 25-year veteran buyer
for Waldenbooks, Borders, and
Barnes & Noble. As an author
friend of mine put it, Ive likely been
training for this job my entire
career, Mayer says.
Seventh Street is the second fiction imprint for parent company
Prometheus Books. After 43 years
as an independent nonfiction press,
Prometheus launched Pyr in 2005
for science fiction and fantasy.

for people who love fiction, and for

people who love inspirational fiction. In another Kingsbury first,
The Bridge will release in hardcover and to maintain a link to her
other books, all of them trade
paperbacks.
The Bridge is a story of missed
opportunities for love and of second chances. It is set against the
closing of a local independent
bookstorethe Bridge of the title
something Howard sees as a gateway to introducing Kingsbury to the
ABA market. The reason we are
bringing it to BEA is the backdrop

BEA SHOW DAILY DAY 2

of the book is a
despondent
bookstore, Smith notes.
It is very relevant in
terms of our market.
There are more than
20 million copies of
Kingsburys 50 novels in
print, many of them
debuting on bestseller
lists, and she has received
numerous awards from Christian
retailers and organizations.
Howard has no plans to tamper with
a good thing. Karen has such a
well-established brand, and she
does it so well, we really just want to
bring her to fans of books who dont

necessarily know her

like they do in the CBA
market, Smith said.
Today, Howard is hosting a Retailers Tea for
Kingsbury at 3:30 p.m.
(invitation only). That
will be preceded by
another first, an inbooth appearance and
signing, 12:301:30 p.m.
My dad would always say there
are no autograph lines in heaven,
Kingsbury said. The only reason
you are meeting people is to make
new friends, and that is the
approach I am taking to BEA.

A Successful Orbit
Around BEA
Orbit, the Hachette Book
Group science fiction
publisher, is celebrating
its fifth anniversary this
fall, as is Hachettes
manga imprint, Yen
Press. And what a wild
ride its been for Orbit,
especially this past year.
Honors and awards have
been raining down: the
presss Samuil
Petrovitch trilogy by
Simon Morden snagged
a 2012 Philip K. Dick
Award for distinguished
science fiction published
in the U.S. in paperback
original format. The
Company Man by Robert
Jackson Bennett
received a special citation from the Philip K.
Dick Trust. The Company
Man also was nominated for a 2012
Edgar Award for best paperback
original. The Kingdom of Gods by
N.K. Jemisin was shortlisted for a
Nebula Award for best novel. And
Leviathan Wakes by James S.A.
Corey and Deadline by Mira Grant
are duking it out for a Hugo Award
for best novel.
Orbit authors are used to flying
high. Brent Weekss Night Angel
trilogy has sold more than 500,000
copies in the U.S. The final novel in
Gail Carrigers Parasol Protectorate
series, Timeless, debuted at #22 on

the New York Times mass

market bestseller list in
March. Karen Millers
novels from Orbit have
sold more than 400,000
copies in the U.S. And the
graphic novel adaptation
of Stephenie Meyerss
Twilight is only one of
several Yen Press
releases to hit the New
York Times bestsellers
lists in the past five years.
As Orbit celebrates its
first five years, the press
anticipates continuing to
explore brave new
worlds, including that of
digital publishing. Orbits
short fiction program
publishes original novellas by Orbit authors in
electronic formats, and
last fall Orbit released its
first digital-original, full-length
e-book, The Hedgewitch Queen by
Lilith Saintcrow.
There are going to be celestial
happenings at Orbits booth (3633),
what with Orbit/Yen fifth-anniversary commemorative cloth bags
being handed out, as well as other
promotional giveaways. Today,
Orbit will host two in-booth author
signings: N.K. Jemisin will sign finished copies of The Killing Moon at
1 p.m., and Kate Locke will sign finished copies of God Save the Queen
Claire Kirch
at 4 p.m.

Abingdons Quilting Novels

Every quilt is a unique work of art,
and a new series from Abingdon
Fiction hopes to tap into the stories
of each one. The new Quilts of Love
series launches at BEA (booth 3832),
and Abingdon will release one book
per month through March 2014.
Readers can get a look by picking
up an advance copy of A Wild Goose
Chase Christmas by
Jennifer AlLee (Nov.),
the second book in the
series. The booth, decorated with quilts, also
will display ARCs of the
series first book,
Beyond the Storm by
Carolyn Zane (Oct.), and
the third title, Path of
Freedom by Jennifer
Hudson Taylor (Jan.
2013).
Each book focuses on
the stories of the women who made
the quilts: the novels cover a variety
of topics, genres, and characters,
says Pamela Clements, associate
publisher for Christian Living and
Abingdon Fiction. Clements adds
that while Abingdons Christian
Living division is just over a year

old, its already offering two really

fresh relevant voices. Undead:
Revived, Resuscitated, and Reborn
by Clay Morgan (Sept.) looks at
individuals in the Bible who died
and came back to life. It speaks to
the spiritual life of these individuals, and its fresh, clever, and wonderfully written, Clements says.
The Christian World of
the Hobbit by Devin
Brown (Oct.) has
received a positive
response, especially
from buyers looking
ahead to the release of
Peter Jacksons film
The Hobbit.
The Christian Living
and Abingdon Fiction
imprints are bigger
than we have been in
the past, and we are
growing, Clements says. We
choose authors and topics that
speak to the general market about
Christian things.
BEA specials include 50% discounts, free freight, and a free POP

Quirk Takes On
New Challenges
Quirk Books founder Dave
Borgenicht, who is also the creator
and coauthor of The Worst-Case
Scenario Survival Handbook and
father of that volumes many lively
offspring, says his companys mission hasnt changed in the 10 years
its been publishing. If anything,
the mission has
become more
finely articulated
over time. We
want to do cool
entertainment to
amuse and
inform the world
as much as we
can, Borgenicht
says. We want to succeed not just
as a publisher but as a publishing
and entertainment company.
In keeping with this goal, the
company published Pride and
Prejudice and Zombies in 2009, its
first work of fiction. It was a huge
hit, Borgenicht says. Sense and
Sensibility and Sea Monsters was
next. The term mashup novel was
born. Night of the Living Trekkies, a
zombie novel, came out in 2010, the
first mashup not piggybacked onto
a famous authors work: an original
mashup. But the mashup trend
wasnt going to last much longer.
Last year Quirk published its first
wholly original fiction and its first

A Dumped, Determined Duo

When it comes to getting over a
breakup and becoming authors,
Maryjane Fahey and Caryn Beth
Rosenthal dont take half measures.
Their story of how Dumped: A
Grown-Up Guide to Gettin Off Your
Ass and Over Your Ex in Record Time
(Sellers Publishing, Sept.) came to
be published is almost as lively as
the book itself.
Fahey, a writer and designer, and
Rosenthal, an actress and former
Benny Hill babe, are longtime friends
who both went through breakups
and got together over cocktails to
commiserate and figure out how to
get over their exes and move on.
Together, we were two determined
chicks who were anxious to reclaim
our fun, sexy selves again, the
authors say. After seeking guidance
from various books, they found them
lacking in inspiration, primarily
written by men, and long on sentiment but short on helpful ideas. A
year later Rosenthal and Fahey,
both of whom had successfully moved
on from being dumped, decided
they needed to share what they had
learned with other women by writing their own book.

Instead of writing a
book proposal, Fahey
and Rosenthal spent
three months writing
the entire book,
which Fahey
designed in a bold graphic style.
They also created 10 mock-ups of
Dumped to show to potential publishers. Steve Ross, director of the
Abrams Artists Agencys literary
division, signed the authors. Before
they even had a publisher, they cre-

No Sweets for the Sweet

An unusual family trait led Kelly
Cooper, author of Cookies for GrownUps (Red Rock Press, Nov.), to
develop recipes for savory cookies
in the 1990s, when her sons disliked
sweets as they were growing up.
Coopers trips through Eastern
Europe and Southeast Asia gave her
the opportunity to discover new
tastes and ideas about what was
appropriate as a dessert or snack.
In these travels I discovered the
multitude of ways to approach flavor with spices, fruits, and vegetables, the California-based Cooper

says. I realized the level

of sweet I was accustomed
to in America neutralized
some of the best features
in our ingredients.
Cookies for Grown-Ups,
perhaps the first cookbook to include recipes for savory
cookies as well as sweet, is the
result of the authors years of
experimentation with flavors and
ingredients. The book will include
full-color photographs throughout.
Indie publisher Red Rock Press
will include QR codes in the book

To the Rescue
Shortly after writer Kim Kavin rescued an adorable puppy named
Blue, his quirky behavior and the
puzzling scabs on his body inspired
her to check out his background.
The New Jersey resident learned
he had been days, perhaps hours
away from being put
down in a county animal
shelter in North
Carolina where 90% of
the dogs are killed in a
gas chamber. Kavin was
flabbergasted. There
was something going on
behind the beautiful pictures of these wonderful
dogs on the Petfinder.
com Web site. What I learned eventually became my book proposal.
Kavin uncovered a horrifying
story about shelters with a 95% kill
rate that use gas chambers to put
pets to death. She found out that
close to $15 million in tax dollars are
spent every year to support these
shelters. That knocked me back,
she notes. On the plus side, she discovered the huge network of volunteers who save thousands of pets
every year from such horrific fates.

Journey for Truth (Barrons, Sept.) is
a real departure for Barrons, which
is known for its pet breed and pet
training books. Barrons president
and publisher, Ellen Sibley, notes
that they recently have been slowly
branching out into different kinds of books for
pet lovers. This muckraking book came along
just as she and her
acquisitions editor were
looking for dog memoirs. Sibley tells Show
Daily, It wasnt exactly
what we had on our
minds, but I read it and
it was such a heart-wrenching
story, I couldnt put it down.
Kavin points out that RV transport is the most common method of
rescuing dogs. There are entire
companies dedicated to transporting rescued dogs to their new
homes. Thats how much demand
there is. She also discovered Pilots
N Paws, a group of people who own
private planes and are hooked up
with the rescue community.
Even the author herself has
started to foster dogs. So far shes

rescue bandwagon as well. A portion of the books profits will be
donated to the national organization Petfinder.com. In addition,
they are coordinating her book
signings with local dog rescue
groups. Barrons marketing manager, Eric Lowenhar, explains,
Were suggesting that when we do
an event we would like them to have
the local rescue dog organization
there so that people can learn more
about what these groups are doing.

Kavin trusts her book will not

only educate people about the
depth of the shelter problem and
encourage them to rescue a dog
rather than buy one from a pet
store or breeder, but also inspire
people to spay or neuter their
petssomething that is sorely lacking in many southern states, which
exacerbates the shelter problem.

dog, Blue, while she is signing

Rich Dad Hits the Airwaves

Robert Kiyosaki might not be the
easiest name to remember, but the
author does not seem to mind,
because ever since his first book,
Rich Dad Poor Dad, hit the bestseller lists, he simply goes by Rich
Dad. And in May, Kiyosaki joined
SiriusXM satellite radio channel
168 for a weekly Saturday afternoon talk show, where he shares
his often contrarian views on
money management.
Featured in the Plata booth (3816)
is his new book, coming in January
2013, Awaken Your Childs

Financial Genius: Why

A Students Work for
C Students and B Students Work
for the Government. Kiyosakis message is a simple one: Every child
has a special gifta special genius.
And he thinks that our school system, which rewards those who
memorize well, does not do enough
to nurture the C students who grow
up to become entrepreneurs.
It is a topic that will no doubt
come up during his new program
on Sirius; joining him is his business
partner and wife, Kim Kiyosaki,
author of Rich Woman.

Hachette Nashville Launches Jericho

Publisher Wendy Grisham says her
new imprint, Jericho Books (booth
3628), which officially launches
today, will be reaching out to the
disassociated, disestablished, and
disgruntled within the Christian
community. She explains: The disassociated are the ones that walked
away from their religion. They may
have lost their faith, might be taking a break, or just fed up with the
establishment. The disestablished
are secular. They have an opinion
but dont have a dog in the fight on
religious issues. They might call
themselves spiritual but not religious. The disgruntled are those

who have stayed in the church but

want to push the boundaries. This
group also includes many who were
disassociated but have returned.
Grisham, who admits to being
one of the disgruntled and left of
center, says the evangelical church
is hemorrhaging 20- to 30-yearolds, and many people who want a
deeper faith are not finding it in
traditional churches. With Jericho,
part of Hachettes Nashville Division,
she wants to keep the conversation going across the divide between
the religious right and left.
Grisham feels the church should
not be exclusive but radically
