Equip every classroom with a passionate teacher who engages students. Teachers should be well prepared and held to high standards.

ACCOUNTABLE LEADERSHIP.
Ensure district and school-based leaders are of high quality and responsive to concerns.

REDUCE EMPHASIS ON TESTING.


Reduce the emphasis on standardized testing and measure students performance more comprehensively. Ensure that students learn life skills.

OPEN COMMUNICATION.
Communication among stakeholders (parents, students, teachers, leaders, district office) should be more effective. Students should be heard and considered in decision-making.

MORE RESOURCES USED WISELY.


Increase resources for electives, student supports and infrastucture such as technology & transportation. Funds are equally distributed, controlled locally and spent transparently.

CLIMATE AND CULTURE.


Schools and community must be safe, healthy, welcoming, supportive and respectful environments with high standards for behavior and academics.

INVOLVED PARENTS.
Parents should be provided education, given ample opportunities for involvement and held accountable. Parents and teachers have better communication with each other. Schools are welcoming toward parents who want to help.

SUPPORT THE WHOLE CHILD.


Students need well-rounded academic instruction, including being taught about values and life/job skills. Schools should have more emotional/behavioral wraparound supports for students.

INCREASE COMMUNITY SUPPORT.


The city should unite around a vision for public education. Schools need greater individual and organizational involvement. More service learning.

POLITICAL & POLICY REFORM.


Strengthen accountability for the school board. Identify and replicate best practices. Enact policy change to improve the quality of teachers. Increase support for public schools from community and elected leaders.

GREATER AUTONOMY.
Give principals more decision-making authority, let teachers guide the instruction in their own classrooms and increase local control over schools.

MORE MENTORS.

More mentors for students are needed, especially male mentors and mentoring about of college and career choices.

FAIRNESS & EQUALITY.


Resources should be distributed equitably across and within schools. High quality instruction should be available at every school and all students should be treated with high expectations. Students with different needs should receive necessary attention.

IMPROVE PERCEPTIONS.
Improve the image of the school district. Increase the value placed on education. Improve the perceptions that adults have about students.
