July 13 - Club members understand rights of women and children and agree to help spread awareness in the community to avoid violence and abuse
The guest speaker at the clubs regular meeting last July 13 was Ms Salvacion Shiot Pascual, noted researcher, writer, and lecturer on womens and childrens rights. Shiot spoke lengthily about Republic Act No 9262 otherwise known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act of 2004. The act underscores the need to protect the family and its members especially women and children against violence and threats to their personal safety and security. Shiot cited disturbing true-to-life cases of violence where women and children suffered from physical/sexual violence, psychological/emotional harm, and economic/financial abuse. The discussions were made even more informative as former barangay chair Rtn Neneng Valmocina related actual cases of violence against women and children happening within our own community. Among those present during the meeting was AG Rose Imperial who expressed interest in inviting Shiot to assist in her clubs outreach programs in Loyola Heights.

Jan 17 - RC Holy Spirit provides first aid kits to garbage collectors to safeguard their health in case of accidents and help ensure uninterrupted community service
On January 17, 2012, RCHS donated eight (8) first-aid kits to the Barangay Council of Holy Spirit for use of the crew members of the Eco-Waste Department in response to a request by the barangay council.. The barangay owns and operates eight (8) garbage collection trucks with a total complement of 38 paleros (garbage collectors). Inspite of preventive measures and care exercised by the men, accidents do happen in the course of their work. First-aid treatments are always urgently needed to contain the adverse effects of accidents like cuts and bruises while they are out in the field away from the health center. The eight garbage collection teams serve a very large urban community: septic, two 120 ml bottles Hydrogen Peroxide, one bottle of 250 ml Ethyl Alcohol 70%, 20 capsules Amoxicillin, 20 tablets Biogesic (paracetamol), one pair of scissors, gauze bandage, first-aid paper tape, cotton balls. The donation was received from RCHS President Ped Condeno and Treasurer Marcia Salvador by Kagawad Lydia Ballesteros, Chair of the barangays Health & Sanitation Committee, Kagawad Bernardito Sabalilag, and Mr Alarmo Matriano of the Eco-Waste Department. At the turn-over President Ped wished that the garbage-truck teams will not need to use the first-aid kits from RC Holy Spirit. He reminded them to be extra careful in their work and wear protective devices such as hand gloves.

Jan 28 - Club participates in the campaign for relief and rehabilitation of Sendongs victims
RCHS sent last January 28, 2012 sixteen (16) boxes of assorted clothes and linens through RC SFDM for the victims of Typhoon Sendong in Mindanao. The donations came from club members and associates, as well as from friends at The Seed Montessori, and were sorted and packed by members of the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School. At about the same time, President Ped Condeno turned over to DG Jess Cifra during the Districts mid-year review a check for P35,000 representing the Clubs financial assistance to the rehabilitation program for the flood victims. The cash donations came from RCHS members and friends of President Ped in the USA and Canada.

Oct 8 - RC Holy Spirit joins other clubs in tree-planting to protect the environment
It had been continuously raining due to a low pressure area that had hovered over the country for several days but this did not deter President Ped, IPP Dodgie, PP Linda, Rtns Marcia, Ric, Peth and Marlene and associate member Malou from joining the tree-planting activity at the La Mesa Dam watershed last Saturday, October 8, 2011. At 6:30AM, the group met with District Chair for Environment AG Butch Madarang and other Rotarians at the watershed and proceeded to an area where holes were waiting to be planted with saplings of various species. The day marked the launching of the UN Tree Planting Environment Summit which District 3780 supports. According to AG Butch, all 93 clubs in the district were expected to participate and plant 30 tree saplings each.

Two hundred (200) tin cans of sardines and assorted used clothes were turned over to Mr Edgar Donaire, President of the Don Carlos Neighbourhood Association, by club President Ped Condeno, Treasurer Marcia Salvador, and IPP Dodgie Osabel RCHS thanks its members as well as friends from Don Antonio Heights and Don Enrique Heights for their generous support. The program of eradicating rabies in Quezon City was launched last Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Bulwagan Amoranto, Quezon City Hall as part of the World Rabies Day Celebration/Mission that is held every year on this date. The Task Force Lead Group drafted the initial stage of OPLAN Eradication of Rabies with the battle cry: END RABIES IN QC NOW NA! (which was coined by Rotarian AG Butch Madarang, chair of the Districts anti-rabies committee.) Launched simultaneously in 9 rabies-infected barangays, RC Holy Spirit officers coordinated the project in Barangay Batasan Hills. We were represented by AG Linda Palattao, SP Ped Condeno, Sec JR Delgra, and Interactors Rommel Pesimo and Aris Delgra.

Sept 25 RC Holy Spirit organizes Intercity meet where Rotaractors & Interactors learn HIV/AIDS & drug abuse and how to prevent these
Some 80 Rotaractors and Interactors attended the inter-city seminar on HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse Prevention held at the QC Red Cross Building last September 25, 2011, a Sunday. Ms Janice Melody Adolfo, RN, Head of the QCRC Community Health, spoke before Rotaractors on HIV/AIDS prevention. As President Ped Condeno mentioned in his welcome remarks, the seminar was very timely since recent data showed that for the past eight years, while most countries reported a steady decrease in HIV/AIDS infection, the Philippines and six other countries have reported an upward trend, increasing by more than 800% in less than a decade. Some of the points emphasized in the HIV-AIDS session:

HIV is a virus that infects people by getting inside their blood cells. To avoid getting HIV, a person must prevent the blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk of someone who is infected from entering the body through anatomical openings such mouth or breaks in ones skin. Specifically the resource person reminded the Rotaractors and grown-ups of the time-tested ABCDE rule:

Pres Ped Condeno of RC Holy Spirit welcomes all attendees and resource persons

Abstain from sex Be faithful to your partner Consistently use condoms Do not use illegal drugs Educate yourself Rotaract club presidents call the inter-city meeting to order

In the concurrent session, Interactors interacted with Mesdames Lilybeth Selda and Maria Carmen Chua of the Quezon City Anti-Drug Council who spoke on Drug Abuse and its consequences.

Top substances being used: Shabu (Methampethamine Hydrochloride); Marijuana; Corex-DM (Cough/Cold Medicine); and Rugby Some proven ways to prevent drug abuse:

DONT TRY, DONT START Close family ties Choose your friends Community vigilance

In her closing remarks, Ms. Annie D. Torres, RN, Administrator of QC Red Cross urged the young participants to share what they have just learned with their parents, relatives and friends. The inter-city meeting was organized by RC Holy Spirit in cooperation with the Quezon City Red Cross. Co-hosts of RCHS in the event were 8 clubs: RC Biak na Bato, RC Commonwealth, RC Greenmeadows, RC Metro Diliman, RC New Manila East, RC Pag-asa, RC San Francisco del Monte and RC Timog. It was made possible through the efforts of the officers and members of the Interact and Rotaract Clubs of Holy Spirit, under the guidance of Sec. JR Delgra, Chair of RCHS New Generations Committee.

Nov 9 RCHS trains 335 young pupils to practise oral hygiene and prevent tooth decay
RCHS conducted a fluoride application and dental care education project for preparatory school pupils of Dona Juana Elementary School in Barangay Holy Spirit on November 9, 2011. The team led by Rtn Dr Marylene Martinez applied fluoride agents to the teeth of 335 kindergarten pupils, done in two (2) batches, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Due to limited space in the school, the procedure was done per class of about 25 children. There were eight (8) classes in the morning, and another eight in the afternoon. Before the fluoride application, the children listened to a short lecture by Rtn Marlene on the proper way of brushing their teeth. The children were also given toothbrush and toothpaste packages, generously provided by Colgate-Palmolive Philippines Inc. The team was prepared to cater to 400 kids; however, some were absent for one reason or another. The topical fluorides were applied to the enamel surface of the teeth of the pupils to reduce the incidence of dental decay. Not all the children were happy about the procedure; some cried, while some simply did not want to open their mouths. Dr Marlene prescribed medication for a child found to have swollen gums. Assisting Rtn Dr Marlene in the fluoridization were President Ped, Treasurer Marcia, Rotarian Peth, associate members Malou, Liza and Neng as well as Rotaractors and Interactors led by PE Kevin and Pres Harold, respectively. Thanks to all those who lent their time and effort in this worthy project. Thanks to Mrs Emely Pelobello, principal of Dona Juana Elementary School, for providing morning and afternoon snacks to all the volunteers, and to the kindergarten teachers for their assistance. RCHS especially thanks Colgate-Palmolive for providing the toothbrushes and toothpastes for the children. Thirteen Rotaractors and Interactors of Holy Spirit cheerfully prepared the 400 dental packs on Saturday night at the Salvador residence, before the Wednesday event with the tots in school.

Sept 2 RC Holy Spirit leads 53 Rotary clubs of D3780 in the distribution & donation of 13,200 volumes of reference books to 100 public schools
It was one project that tested the resilience of the club. 13,200 volumes of mostly hardbound reference books to be given to a hundred schools through some 50 Rotary clubswith just a day of preparation! A logistics nightmare! First, how to haul the huge number of books from the SM warehouse in Quiapo to the DAHHA clubhouse in Bgy Holy Spirit in Quezon City. With trucks of Pres Ped and AG Linda, the cargo was brought to its destination. Then the big problem! The books had to be sorted into high school, elementary and pre-school levels, bundled by straw cords for easier handling, and finally piled into stacks for each school. Thanks to the 2 dozen Rotaractors and Interactors, under the supervision of Pres Ped, PP Linda, Sec JR and Treas Marcia, all these were accomplished in nine (9) hours lasting up to 9:30 pm on the eve of the book-distribution. Governor Jess Cifra witnessed last September 2 the turnover of books by Rotary clubs to principals and officials of the 37 public high schools, 50 elementary schools and 15 preparatory schools that the clubs had identified as needy beneficiaries. The large-scale book-distribution activity involved the donation of 13,200 volumes of mostly hardbound reference books that had originated from a US-based partner library of SM Foundation. This project represented an expansion of the already on-going literacysupport book donation activity of RC Holy Spirit with SM Foundation as sponsor. The distribution was done with the help of 53 participating Rotary clubs in RID 3780 which had been earlier requested by RC Holy Spirit to identify public schools which badly needed reference books in their respective libraries. The project was successfully completed by RC Holy Spirit through a concerted effort of Rotarians, associ-

The sister club agreement between RC Holy Spirit and RC Marikina North, RID 3800, was renewed at the latter's western-inspired 31st anniversary celebration held last September 6, 2011. The agreement was signed by President Ped of RCHS and President Dr Terry Amado of RCMN and will be effective for one year. After the signing, President Ped turned over four (4) cartons of various medicines and food supplements in support of RCMN's medical/dental mission in Barangay San Rafael in Rodriquez, Rizal on September 10, 2011. Oct 19 - Rotarians unwind, then rewind for service with RC Marikina North D3800
October 19, 2011 was meant to be a regular fellowship night. It, however, turned out to be a special fellowship night for three (3) reasons: it was a belated celebration of Rtn Peths birthday last October 16; our AG Rose Imperial came and donated P5,000 to the Club; our friends from sister club RC Marikina North District 3800 also came. We turned over to President Terry and VP Lina of RCMN 50 sets of towels, laundry detergent, toothbrush and toothpaste for the prisoners in Montalban whose prison cells were flooded during the last typhoon. Working together with the Sta Cecilia Parish Church and Parochial School, RCMN asked for our assistance in providing toiletries to 265 needy prisoners located in Dela Costa, Montalban, Rizal in a mission scheduled last October 23, 2011. In response to our sister clubs request, Rtn Nonoy Solidum donated 50 bath towels while the Club donated detergents, toothbrushes and toothpaste for 50. All had a great time with the jokes and funny stories shared by CP Nides, IPP Dodgie, Presidents Ped and Terry, punctuated by the trademark performance of CP Nides on his harmonica. In the absence of a karaoke, the group contented themselves with singing a cappella, and everyone was game contributing a song number or two.

Last September 28, 2011, Pres Terry Amado of our sister club RC Marikina North D3800 came with VP Lina Zuniga and Rtn Arnel Santiano to personally convey their appreciation for the assistance extended by RCHS to their Sept 10 medical/dental mission in Bgy San Rafael, Rodrigiuez, Rizal. Pres Terry was profuse with thanks for the medicines and food supplements donated by the club and solicited from Unilab which made the mission possible. Both clubs look forward to working in collaborative projects.
