NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF CONCRETE

IS 456:2000 relates to plain and reinforced concrete code of practice. As per code clause 17- inspection and testing of structures ,the testing is required to be done to know grade of concrete used and estimation of the properties of concrete in the structure. The method is determined by the degree of correlation between strength and physical quality measured by the non destructive test. Concrete is made of material of variable characteristics. As during the execution for production and placing of concrete, workmen are unaware of the specifications of the materials, it results in poor quality and performance characteristics of the concrete. To evaluate the destructive mass of the concrete , it is required to test the insitu concrete after construction by Non Destructive Tests of the concrete. Non Destructive evaluation techniques are being adopted for the following purposes. 1. 2. 3. 4. Estimation of compressive Strength of concrete. Establishing the uniformity and homogeneity of concrete. Detection of presence of cracks Voids and other imperfection Measurement of bar diameter, cover condition of reinforcement with respect to corrosion 5. Establishing the quality of the concrete in relation to standard requirement Techniques 1. Rebound Hammer Test: This method is based on the principles that the rebound of an elastic mass depends on the hardness of the surface against which the mass gets crushed. The test is called Schmidt Hammer Test also. Rebound hammer consists of spring controlled mass, slides on a plunger. When the plunge pressed against the surface of the concrete ,the spring controlled mass rebounds depends on surface hardness of concrete and it will be related to compressive strength of concerts.

The rebound is read off along of graduated scale and it is designated as the rebound number.

2. Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test The Ultrasonic pulse is produced by a transducer which is held in contact with one surface of concrete .After travelling a known path length (L) in the concrete, the pulse of vibration is converted into an electrical signal by the second transducer held in contact with other surface of concrete member and the transmit time pulse velocity is give by V=L/T and the unit is km / sec. Pulse Velocity by cross probing 1. Above 4.5 2. 3.5 to 4.5 3. 3.0 to 3.5 3. Core Test : Concrete core extracted from the Structural provides insitn strength of concrete. 4. Corrosion Test Mailer Corrosion of steel is on electrochemical process the corroded steel can be detected by this Test meter Good Medium Concrete quality grading Excellent

5. Reinforcement bars & Diameter Is Measured by profometer includes Magnetometer &cover meter
